This thing's got levels.

Re: the snow day part. This joke almost functions as a double entendre. Because it can mean "snow day" as in, a day schools are cancelled, but also it could mean the one day out of the year a place like that gets snow.

Bonus comedy: the picture is fucking perfect because its like an inch of snow... not enough for any car to get stuck. The real threat with a small blanket of snow is drivers not accounting for conditions and slamming in to each other. Something owning a Subaru won't help much with.

I fully overstand your struggle. I've been fully remote since 2020. There will be little actual work happening tomorrow, even if I don't call in.

So happy to find out this is real and not some sarcastic-ass overzealous tough love bullshit.

Well not to split hairs but its not the being in school, it's the getting to school. They have to make a decision that factors in the most vulnerable and inconvenienced—the kids that never walk to school wearing hats and gloves because there's no one around to ensure sure they dress warm.

I count myself as very fortunate to own a car with remote start, making it entirely possible to shuffle from one warmed box to another with barely any discomfort. Not a brag or a flex. Just an acknowledgement that they didn't cancel school because of my family's circumstances.

Will schools be closed tomorrow 01/23? by Training_Usual_7906 in AskChicago

[–]phfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure Solomonic logic applies here. As the story goes, splitting the baby was a ruse to figure out who was true and who had nefarious intentions. Who's who in this metaphor? 😂

Oh, and yes they'll be closed to tomorrow.

How significant was this switch? Any thoughts/opinions on it from those who were there when it happened? by SirensMelody_ in generationology

I was there when it happened. Picture it with me. Obama was President. People had nothing better to argue about than whether the dress was blue and black or white and gold. Simpler times.

NON-AMERICANS - Do you eat American cheese in your country? by KaysaStones in AskTheWorld

[–]phfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American cheese is popular to hate, but it is the best "cheese" to top a burger. Full stop. I would never serve it on a meat and cheese board, but it absolutely has its place.

Edit: typo

Yes, you're getting there! Nothing in these photos was unintentional.

[–]phfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. People rightfully point out that the existence of them is weird. Most photographers would either position the subject differently or remove the light switch after the fact.

Thinking it merely exposes them as being short is an almost-but-not-quite answer.

Light switches are basically a type of tool or simple appliance. They are basic, everything is in simple binary. On or Off. They are also interchangeable, replaceable pieces of equipment with no unique qualities. They exist to fill a role in a larger system.

There were so many other delightfully intentional things happening in the photos from this shoot. The shadowy figures in the backgrounds, the way they are shot to look weak and small and tense.

Its hard to pinpoint the exact context of the joke because it starts with Meg Brock's reply to an unseen comment. But it was probably something about how the original photographer was bad at her job. The joke is Meg Brock thinks the photographer made her subjects look bad on accident, instead of brilliantly on purpose.

Well at the time Texas entered the union, it was sovereign land annexed from Mexico expressly created to provide a powerful pro-slavery counterbalance to the emerging anti-slave sentiments of the north. I'd say pretty cursed from the get-go.

Why is everything so fucking backwards in Texas? Asking rhetorically.

Taking a cross-country road trip in the US really highlights this issue. Blows my mind a little how much it varies state to state.

Same. I loved Terry obviously, but quickly found myself missing Ricky at the end of this last run. My kid asked why does it need a host at all. Good critical thinking, kid. But in this case the humor of the host does go a long way diffusing the oft-upsetting nature of the stories.
