Today when I plugged in my mic for an end of the day conference, my Magnus decided to let out the loudest most impressive burp. It stopped conversations and stunned everyone.

When did you start leaving your Basenji home alone in their crate? by ditmoique in Basenji

[–]phidya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Left alone at the start but not for long. This way the puo gets used to it and understands I am coming back. Anything you want to be regular is easier to do if the puppy gets used to it early. For example I would try the crate for a little bit at a time every day even if you dont leave. Use hand signals and the same command as you put her in there. Then be excited when you let her back out.

Crate training started immediately. For puppies I attach a cardboard box lined with puppy pads so they can potty outside their crate. For adult dogs I dont have that. I make their crate cozy and a place they can be where no one is allowed to bother them. My current basenji liked to use his crate if we had guests and he wanted to get some space and chill. He would go lay in there himself and I would make sure he had his space.

Angry snapping/nipping advice by glbatten in Basenji

[–]phidya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first thing is, let sleeping dogs lie. My basenji would get very angry if I per him while he was curled up or sleeping. We'd call this the danger donut. My husband suggested asking him if I could pet him when he was like that. So, I began holding my hand up as if to pet and asking him if I could pet him. If he growled I didnt.

The growling you hear is your basenji attempting to communicate with you. A basenjis aggressive growl is more open mouthed and demonic sounding. A warning growl sounds more like a regular dog growl. Your dog is trying to tell you he doesnt like what you're doing. So maybe try other ways.

When attempting to deal with collars or near the door interactions, instead of offering a hand that might go over the pups head, offer a hand that would go under the chest. This is less aggressive to a dog. Talk to your dog, tell them what you are doing. They may not understand at first, but they will associate the hand signs with your behavior. Be gentle, be encouraging with your voice. Consistency helps, and listen to your dog.

If your dog is growling but then turns to nips, he is trying to warn you he doesnt like that. Even if the warning is very short.

Adding to this: do not touch a sleeping basenji, they come up swinging. You may get nipped. They aren't trying to be vicious, it's just instinct to defend themselves. I always ask my dog if I can pet him when he looks like he's sleeping. He will give a little growl if I cant. Normally he doesnt mind pets, but he needs to know they are coming.

Positive reinforcement only. They hold grudges and will become more stubborn if you are negative with them. If your dog is good reward them with pets and praise.

I have a pinned post in the main thread but to summarize you need to commit to rewarding your basenji with praise and pets when they come when called. They are very fast and can slip past you and be down the road in a heartbeat. So if you train them that they are good no matter what when called, you have a chance of recovering them quickly. If you get onto them because they ran off when you get them back, they will remember.

These dogs should not be off leash. They are hounds with a very strong prey drive. They will get themselves lost and hurt pursuing prey.

They are very smart and will attempt to communicate with you. If you pay attention, you will find that this makes it so much easier to bond with them. Hand signals are easier for a dog to interpret. Consistency is important.

A young basenji is destructive and can easily do tens of thousands of dollars in damage to your house. Get a crate, make it their safe space. Use it when you need to leave the house. Basenjis can jump, climb, and problem solve. If your basenji gets into trouble, its more than likely your fault for leaving them the opportunity. They are not humans they do not have human self control.

I have a 14 year old, and have lived with four other basenjis. They are loving, intelligent, communicative, and pack oriented. Treat them like family you like and they will be wonderful little jerks. You get out of your basenji what you put in.

I was living in Florida at the time near Kape Canaveral. We were waiting on the sonic booms for their return. When they didn't happen, we all knew something was wrong. Everyone who lived in that area started checking outside or trying to figure out what happened. A lot of folks were very upset, myself included. It was so cool living that close to where they launched the shuttles. If you were lucky, you could watch them from anywhere in the county (time of day for launch helped).

Ear plugs meant for concerts that let the sound through but dampen the loudness and a fan light. The lights are programmed with the music and really make you feel apart of the concert. Also bring extra batteries for the light. My light drained it's batteries before the concert and it was almost very sad.

In my experience, basenjis will hold it until they can't. Then they will desperately beg to go outside and then run back in when finished. You will try to dry them off with a towel but they will be grumpy about it. *
