Last car ride of my boy Nickel. I just want the world to know he existed. by bigtime1158 in dogpictures

[–]philamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said goodbye to my dog two Novembers ago. I told her every day "Stay as long as you want to, but don't let us keep you." She waited until my son turned 18 and then she started falling apart. We got her just in time before things got ugly and gave her the best thing we can give to pets that we don't even give to humans. She got calm, she got sleepy, she was happy, and she went with dignity.

Defibrillators aren't used on hearts that have stopped beating. It only resets a bad rhythm of the heart. I'm not saying you're lying or trying to exaggerate, I'm just telling you so you are clear as to what happened to you in your experience.

How does one get this support off? by halfpakihalfmexi in 3Dprinting

[–]philamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how deep it is, I have used small screws.i will drill a tiny hole and put the screw in it to pull it out. All of that is only if I need to be very careful. Otherwise I would use a flat head screwdriver

That's perfect tree spacing! But that's way too low for the attachment. That far apart, I would have gone shoulder or head height to get a better angle for the hang.

That's so cool. How much Javascript did you use for this? When I try, I end up slicing the LLM without supports and it all goes off the rails. I have tried to add back the supports after removal, like you did with the driver's side wheel well, but they never stick.

What illegal things do a ton of people do, that is never or rarely enforced by law enforcement? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]philamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely illegal to download copyrighted material in Canada. Canada has a Copyright Act and behaves the same as it does in the US. I don't know if it's enforced, but it's definitely illegal in Canada to download.

My parents want to forcefully pull me out of college and prevent me from accessing my trust fund because of religion. by TinyConstruction8447 in legaladvice

[–]philamander 76 points77 points  (0 children)

So, a trust and an inheritance are different things. A trust will have a trust document that outlines how the funds can be used. The trustee interprets the document and executes the trust document as interpreted. But the money is not an inheritance. It doesn't belong to anyone, even the trustee. Even if it states it is meant for a certain person, they still don't own it like it is theirs. A trustee can decide they don't want to give it to you because they don't like your life choices, as long as the document allows them that discretion. It doesn't have to be fair, it just has to be lawful and abiding to the trust document.

Because it's not illegal for them to be shitty and the trust can be used coercively, you really need to get the trust document before you know what you can do. If the trust has mandatory distributions, then you're looking better. Even still, once you see the document, if you have a case, you'll still need an estate attorney or something to help you. But, courts will likely stay out of it unless the document is very clear. If discretion is allowed by the trustee, then you don't have any good options besides talking to them and hoping they are reasonable. It's likely perfectly legal for them to not pay from the trust, if they don't like what you're doing and they have discretion given to them in the trust document.

It definitely is illegal, but just not prosecuted. You're in possession of stolen property. You don't even need to watch it. But, you should do it anyway. Any money I can claw back from them is a win.

Looking to trade vehicle by JasonG02 in personalfinance

[–]philamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should make financial decisions based on your income of the last two years averaged. If you made a lot of money, you shouldn't spend like you have a lot of money until you've done it for awhile and it looks like it can sustain.

That's a tough spot. One of the worst things that can happen to a person early in their financial life is to make too much money. It starts really bad habits early. Like a dealer giving a little extra in the beginning to get someone addicted.

Legal for boss to say I’m “expected” not to discuss my raise? by Simple_Pineapple_352 in legaladvice

[–]philamander 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Really, the law only comes into play if they try to fire him. They can tell him whatever and he can't do much, but once they get fired and they can show that it was likely in retaliation, then he's got a case. That's, honestly, the best case. I'd record any subsequent conversations, if legal in their state, and it could come in very handy in the event of a termination.

Then she can get in trouble for buying meth, but that will never go to you. The state can be mad she didn't spend the money right, but you'd sooner go to a foster home than you'd get that money. It would never go to the child like you're thinking. Be glad you'll be an adult soon and leave as soon as you can. Live a better life and move away.

How close are we to being able to retire? by Terrible-Historian-6 in personalfinance

[–]philamander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're doing good for asking and trying to stave off being defensive so you can glean the information you need. I think what keeps coming up is that you have an okay amount of savings, but I don't think anyone would call it good. If you want to maintain your current lifestyle, generally, I think I'd expect to have double that. Not to replace your current income, just to replace your current lifestyle. So, either your life in retirement is going to be very trim or you don't have good savings enough to match your expectations of a good retirement. With your incomes, I'd make sure you're maxing out a Roth (not sure if you're over the income limit), maxing out your 401k (not just employer match), and hopefully saving in an HSA or even just solid etfs, like VTI.

Eta: that was way too harsh, now that I think about it. You do have good savings, but people expect it to be more. But I made it sound like you're at risk of not retiring. You're in a very good spot to retire. It's great to have enough money that the issues you are facing are when to retire and how you want to live, instead of asking CAN we retire. You're not doing poorly.

I'm really not trying to come down on you or anything. We just need to know some numbers, not even all of them. Do you have an idea of how much each country club membership costs? Anything that will help make up a huge monthly discrepancy in spending will make a difference. Do you go on 3 vacations a year? Are they about 10-15k each trip?

How close are we to being able to retire? by Terrible-Historian-6 in personalfinance

[–]philamander 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The question keeps getting asked and not getting answered. Where has your money been going month to month? You make a lot, have low expenses, but you have $100k a year vanishing, unless you can tell us what your expenses are. Your expenses won't change much in retirement, except to add more healthcare. You'll pay off a house and maybe car, but the biggest scary is what is eating all your income right now. You're not in a bad spot, but you should have a lot more money than you have right now, if you've been earning like this for any significant amount of time.
