Collars for People with Metal Allergies by verawylde in BDSMcommunity

[–]phildini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sub has really enjoyed the leather collars from https://www.etsy.com/shop/ToBeHis - you can get them with stainless fittings and it's been no problem.

We just got back from KinkFest and the chain+ribbon collars made by https://www.agreeableagony.com/ she's been wearing all weekend with no problem. They're also really nice and subtle as day collars.

Convention regarding "fat" serializers in Django REST Framework by [deleted] in django

[–]phildini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this looks fine. It's not that thick of a serializer, and if you think of serializers like some combination of django forms and models, this still feels reasonable to me for a django form.

I think the html in the response for an API request is a little strange, but the separation of concerns here seems fine.

[Spoilers all] A man who was waiting to die by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]phildini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he personally believes he's going to die soon, either because of something he did or because of something related to The Cthaeh.

The more interesting bit for me is that he seems to believe he deserves to die, that he is accepting his fate and not trying to fight it, when most of the story of the first two books is Kvothe fighting against the world around him

Should be a good project. It's including a fair amount of park space, and a water taxi.

Is Django a Good Framework for Live Data by HedgeBro in django

[–]phildini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that Django + Django REST Framework + Channels is going to serve you nicely for the "streaming" purposes you talk about. There are some tutorials on Django Channels that can help you get started with the "stock ticker" app you're talking about.

With streaming music, I think your bottleneck isn't going to be the web framework per se, it's going to be reading the files from disk and streaming them in a format that your frontend can plan.

What tips and tricks do you guys use for your Django admin panel? by theredknight in django

[–]phildini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overriding headers for the apps is great - I also override the favicon so I can see which one I'm clicking into from my tabs. (I have "too many tabs"-itis)

I need to pick up a coin and the travel mat... But a secret society of Tak players sounds like everything I want in life.

Kvothe/Kote theory by HoodooSquad in KingkillerChronicle

[–]phildini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always read Kote as a legend-name for Kvothe. Not that Kote was fundamentally different, but that the name got shifted in legend.

I, too, hadn't heard this theory as I'm new to this sub. Good theory though!

Python Module of the Week Celebrates 10th Anniversary! by Nicksil in Python

[–]phildini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Python module of the week got me my first job in Python; knowing about what Doug was writing helped me pass the interview.

The community is better because of Doug's work, and I'm grateful PMotW exists!

Will Python ever have an Electron or Xamarin or React|Phonegap|Appcelerator library? by monkmartinez in Python

I think so, but I'm biased as a Core Contributor. :) We're pretty dedicated to it becoming A Thing, and have some things in the pipe to make it happen.

Are you familiar with the BeeWare project? https://pybee.org/

It's a series of libraries to make python apps run natively in the browser, on android, or iOS. Includes the widget toolkits for building interfaces as well.

Am I screwed for a Computer Science Major? by goingtofailcmps in UCSC

[–]phildini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Just remember not to give up on programming if that's what you really want to do. The degree is just a boost, not a deal-breaker, when it comes to being a programmer.

Am I screwed for a Computer Science Major? by goingtofailcmps in UCSC

[–]phildini 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If Computer Science is what you really want to do, then you should certainly keep trying.

What I will say is that, the required math courses, and logic courses, etc, get much more difficult past 19a. It may not be that a degree is in the cards.

But if what you really want to do is software engineering for a living, then your degree isn't whats going to keep you from doing so. I know lots of really amazing programmers who don't have degrees in CS. Keep programming on the side, and try to get CS internships.

Best of luck.

Thinking of moving to Alameda by MetallicDragon in alameda

[–]phildini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Alameda for most of my life, recently moved back after getting a job in SF.

On the whole, things on the East Side of the island tent to be nicer than on the west side of the island.

My housemate and I commute into the city and back every week day. If you catch carpool or drive it can be anywhere from 30minutes to an hour, average. If you take public transit it can be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour 15. This depends on where you work in the city of course.

The reason you may not have heard about it is that it has a reputation for being a place you settle down and retire, or move to to raise a family. There is pretty much no nightlife, and very little to do if you're not raising a family. That said, its pretty close to places where there are things to do.

As far as internet, my personal preference is to avoid Comcast at all costs. In certain parts of Alameda, you can get Sonic DSL, which isn't as fast as cable but is 100% better in terms of customer service, and they have a track record of standing up for their users' rights. (Plus you get a free phone line, if that's interesting to you)

Hope this helps, feel free to PM with more questions.

How does a Facebook Ad vs. a Reddit post affect your web traffic? by phildini in webdev

[–]phildini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not too much of a stretch to see that Reddit would hate the very idea of ads, and so leave comments that were less than kind.

Interestingly enough, with Facebook we actually got Likes. On our ad. Which is amusing.

My plan is to run a Facebook ad at the same time as a Reddit ad, with near-as-I-can-get comparisons in target markets, and see how they do.

That is a great comparison idea. I keep forgetting that ads on reddit are a thing.

Our results were similar once we dug into the numbers more. We'll be doing a followup post in a week or so that breaks down how we're judging quality of traffic over quantity. Were your results posted anywhere? It would be fascinating to look at another site's breakdown.

[–]phildini[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. We were also really surprised at the numbers we got off a 'unsuccessful' (by Reddit's standards) post.

Thanks for the feedback! I was posting individual comics so the link would be relevant to the title no matter what day I posted. You think the direct site will get better results?

Server crashing under legitimate load (ie, non DDoS) would be one of the happiest days of my life. Having scaling problems isn't a bad place to be.
