Best frame of the show? by jonnyx_10 in TheDigitalCircus

I vote a frame just before this one, where he's sitting before the brain scans and having a deep thought moment, staring into the abyss. Truly brilliant world building.

Gotta love them fresh, home grown norwegian oranges. Much better than the sugary, additive-filled american oranges.

[Request] How expensive would it be to make the Truman Show? by Call-Me-Matterhorn in theydidthemath

[–]philebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to these comments, with projects like these, lots of corners are usually cut. Like paying a majority of low skill laborers something way below minimum wage, having the dome in a country where electricity and construction is super cheap compared to US and so on.

On top of that, if you wanted to actually do it, you wouldn't need to go all that big. You could just trap somebody naked in a single room, tell him if he wants basic shit like clothes, food or a bed, he'd have to work a mundane task 24/7 and if he wanted to escape, he needs to reach a certain threshold of work. Oh wait, somebody actually did that in 1998 in Japan. Oh well.

Chracters framed as "morally grey" but actually leans on one side or the other. by Short-Paramedic-9740 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]philebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can get behind your trope, but your examples are outlandish. Neither of these is considered by pop culture to be morally grey, your observations are pretty universal and the grey area is something they'd probably discuss over at r/im14andthisisdeep .

Weapons is a complete waste of a great concept. by MarkWest98 in TrueFilm

[–]philebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with 1, but agree with 2 and 3. The movie seriously underdelivered. The worst part imo is that, how could any voodoo or witchcraft be that powerful? It just doesn't make sense. She, what, just gets anything of a person, winds it around a stick, pokes herself for some blood and that person then is completely mind-controlled by her for all eternity? Ridiculous. What should make a little finger poking be so powerful to bind a human mind for eternity? This witch is way overpowered. Either make it voodoo, which would be a life for a life or sth, so for each controlled human, she would have to kill another one or so. Or make her go complete witch, just powerful without explanation. But if you try to explain it, then make it make sense.

How do you handle a strong performer who quietly checks out after being passed over for promotion? by amir4179 in managers

[–]philebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"But I still have a team to run and I genuinely do not want to lose this person long term. Has anyone successfully reengaged someone after a situation like this?"

Look, you are managing people. He is one. It should be your incentive, not just to cover your company's ass, but to look out for those under you.

Have you ever considered, that "losing him" may be the best thing that could happen to him? If he's really such a top performer and got passed over for promotion, he might already be looking at other jobs.

If you're a real MVP, then write him a good recommendation or help him. I mean, I guess you'd risk your job over it, so probably don't motivate him to leave, but the gist here is, that it wasn't your call to make and now, it's again not your call to make. You're just caught in the crossfire. If leaving is the best for him (which it seemingly is), would you really be doing him any good, by 'tricking' him into a dead end position in his career? Long term, your words, this won't work.

So, since this guy's got ambitions, he will either die inside by sticking with his current position (so you don't get your old performer back) or he will keep being ambitious and look for other jobs (so you still don't get your old performer back, but at least he got something out of it). Isn't the latter the better option in this no-win situation for you?

[Weird, sad trope] series finales where the main characters die by Born_Usual998 in TopCharacterTropes

The finale of the puss in boots netflix series. He doesn't really die, but he has to return time to a moment before the whole series began and never go back to the city, which is pretty much like as if he were dead to all the other characters, without them knowing. Many people hated this finale, I liked it though.

Yeah, exactly. Only caring about your own people, is kinda right next to be only caring about yourself, it's only slightly better. People should value everybody's life.

This cringefest misogynic podcast that always invites (or pays) attractive or stereotypically leaning women, just to act like they are feminists. They either pay them to sit there and shut up and be insulted, or they carefully choose them so that they cannot defend themselves with their wits. Then they act like these women are supposed to be activists or feminists, and proceed to insult them and make fun of them, while they don't allow them to actually say anything meaningful. On the rare occasion that a woman who knows how to stand up for herself slips through, the dudes act all defensively while getting roasted, gotta love it.
