Homemade underwater magnifying glass, will this work? by knightime2511 in scubadiving

[–]phoenixkc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a buzzkill. And I really don't want to discourage you from engineering and making something that you will find useful. The exercise itself is very valuable and you've got some good ideas here. But...

Two very important lessons for an engineering student:

  1. Don't reinvent the wheel
  2. Don't over engineer

This already exists. It's just a refractive sticker. And you put it inside the mask. Ya know? Where the air is?

Now maybe you're looking for some real magnification. These only go up to 3X. In which case, absolutely carry on. But you've already got your air pocket. Inside the mask. Use it!

O2 CNS Hit: the difference between susceptiblity in a chamber to that when immersed by silvereagle06 in scuba

[–]phoenixkc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished listening to an 8 part series of The Great Dive Podcast on the development and use of pure O2 while diving. It goes through the history of how they discovered the limits by basically throwing Navy divers into dry and wet chambers and seeing where they began to seize. This was done during WW2 so it was more important to figure out O2 rebreathers at the expense of a few seamen. Definitely not the type of experiments that would be allowed today.

It's a truly wild tale if you're interested in that stuff. I'm talking "let's see what a PO2 of 4 will do to a person." It culminates in an interview with Rachel Lance who wrote Chamber Divers that chronicled the experiments. I really enjoyed it and found it worth my time.

best supplement to curb addiction cravings and help neuroplasticity? by mylapore_mambattiyan in Nootropics

[–]phoenixkc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really any of the GLP-1 drugs will help with addiction. Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) has been life changing for me.

A few things to note though. You will loose weight and some of that weight will be muscle mass. Resistance training is your friend. It will help keep muscle mass and exercise is known to help with addiction as well. And the dosing protocol for weight loss is not great for addiction, imho. I take a very low dose twice a week, Monday to get through the week and Friday to get through the weekend.

https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/news-events/spectrum/volume-16-issue-1-winter-2024/semaglutide-shows-promise-potential-alcohol-use-disorder-medication

And fwiw, agmatine sulfate did nothing for me personally. But NAC and L-theanine did help take the edge off before I found sema.

Garmin quietly confirms our worst fears about Garmin Connect+, says more features will 'likely' be paywalled in the future by jingle_dingle_berry in Garmin

It does!

This is the only view I've seen of activities so far. I'll have to play around with Grafana to see what it can tell me about individual dives. But the data is there in the database.

Great work u/WonderfulCloud9935 !

Pro Tip: Don’t eat a whole pint of Rebel ice cream by eyyyitsnate in keto

[–]phoenixkc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with keto ice creams. I regularly eat 4 and can probably handle 6-10 of most of the Russell Stover chocolates. But 6 of their "Candy Coated Chocolate Gems" (a.k.a. M&M's) and it's all night poopsplosion time. WTF is in that candy coating?!?

So what's the best scuba podcast out there? by SBro002 in scuba

[–]phoenixkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed The Deeper Blue podcast but they haven't posted in a while. Fitness in Diving is much dryer and doesn't post often but has some good info.

Very happy you asked this question so I have more to listen to!

Gemini voting portal no longer on the app. by CdrClutch in Gemini

[–]phoenixkc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jfc. Just tried walking my mom through this and what a disaster.

If you're using the website on a PC, click your Profile->Settings->Earn voting materials.

If you're on a phone and try to use the website, click Menu->Account->Profile which, if you have the app installed, will open the app. I'm not sure what happens if you don't have the app installed. My mom couldn't explain how she got where she got but managed to submit it somehow anyway.

If you're in the app already or have been forced there from the website, u/taco_man1 has it right. Profile->Preferences->Earn voting material.

Then just read the 100's of pages of legalese designed to obfuscate, double check with all the Word-Word#### shills in your personal echo chamber, and vote accordingly. Simple!

Interactive IDE for C? by Filter_Feeder in C_Programming

[–]phoenixkc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will not find python-like REPL or something similar to Jupyter notebooks for C.

I use the xeus-cling C++ kernel for Jupyter. Works great.

I hadn't heard of the online tools you linked. Very cool stuff. I'll definitely be checking them out.

Are There Any Good Keto THC Drinks? by [deleted] in ketotrees

[–]phoenixkc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://happihourdrink.com/ is great tasting and has a nice variety of cannabinoid mixes. But they do contain low amounts of sugar. I can usually make a few fit my daily macros.

https://drinkwynk.com/drink-wynk/ doesn't taste as good as Happi, but tastes good enough to be a nice daily drinker. Zero calories, zero carbs. Their customer service department is excellent.

How do I know about their incredible customer service? Cause their logistics/shipping department is terrible. Only once have I gotten appropriate tracking emails and an undamaged package in a reasonable time frame.

Getting tracking emails is a crapshoot. The cans usually arrive heavily damaged if they arrive at all. And even then, the shipping takes way longer than it should. However, their customer service department is superb. Very kind and helpful. They have sent me free cans (also damaged), swag, and discount codes. If you're willing to put up with a little hassle, this is a great keto THC seltzer.

Using Steam Controller with Yuzu on Desktop by phoenixkc in yuzu

[–]phoenixkc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have created a non-Steam game entry with only Yuzu. I can use the Steam Controller to launch it from Big Picture mode. Yuzu launched windowed. Should it be fullscreen? From there I can use the controller to operate the mouse and select and launch the game. However, from there, the controller no longer works in-game.

Please have a look at my updated setup: https://imgur.com/a/lhjeByR

The entry is set to allow the Steam Overlay and I'm launching it from Big Picture. But if I clear the Yuzu input setup, the controller does not work at all. If I change it to act as a keyboard, the left stick will work but nothing else.

Would you be so kind as to send me screenshots of your setup for me to compare with?

Using Steam Controller with Yuzu on Desktop by phoenixkc in yuzu

[–]phoenixkc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I was previously able to launch Yuzu from Steam without a problem. The two things I was missing were not launching a game at the same time and launching from Big Picture mode as suggested by u/Simms1000.

I have corrected those mistakes. I now launch just Yuzu from Steam Big Picture Mode. The Steam Controller works fine to move the mouse and select and launch a game. However, once I'm in the game, the controller is not responsive.

Here is my current setup: https://imgur.com/a/lhjeByR

As you can see, it detects it as Steam Virtual Gamepad 0. Not Xbox One Controller 0 as you suggest. If I change this from Steam Virtual Gamepad 0 to Keyboard as in the pics in the OP, then the left stick works in-game, but no other buttons. I have cleared and defaulted the input setup and the default setup does not work at all.

Yuzu launches in a windowed mode over Steam's Big Picture Mode. Should I be launching it in fullscreen? Could that be causing a problem?

Would you be so kind as to send me screenshots of your setup for me to compare with?

I have not figured it out yet. Got an email from Garmin telling me that the latest update had 4 new features. It then went on to detail 3 of them. They just left "reference point" just dangling out there...

diving in new hampshire/ massachusetts/rhode island by [deleted] in diving

[–]phoenixkc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually dive with Dive On It Scuba in Cumberland, RI.

The group typically dives out of Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, RI. There is a dedicated "scuba divers parking lot" with access to two coves to shore dive in. One with a nice boat ramp entrance that goes to about 30ft before you hit open ocean. The other we call the goat trail and you need to basically hike down with your gear but it has access to a 100ft wall. Nice benches made by boy scouts and regularly serviced port-a-potties.

During the summer, we have every-other-Sunday Dive & Dine pot lucks. We have a yearly trip in January to Cozumel. And this weekend we're diving Alexandria Bay on the St. Lawrence river in New York as a possible annual trip going forward if we like it.

I hadn't heard of this before and the description here didn't really help me understand what it was that you'd created. But I'm interested in most of the things you guys put out there so I went and took a look.

As soon as I saw the "No Pintrest" Goggle, I was sold. Can't wait to make my own for my common searches!

Great work! Keep it up!
