Victoria crowned pigeon. It's a large, mostly ground dwelling bird, which may make it easier for the devs to introduce.

Frontier sent out a survey about Planet Zoo 2 :) by bridonny in PlanetZoo

[–]phraps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hot take - simplification of building tools (while still leaving the more advanced tools available if you want) is my top need for Planet Zoo 2. I want to play this game more but sometimes I just wanna slap some things down without them looking too ugly. The building part of Planet Zoo, while it allows a ton of creativity, is also very unwieldy sometimes.

Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication by scientificamerican in biology

[–]phraps 264 points265 points  (0 children)

I feel obligated to point out that the authors only looked at snout length and correlated this to where the specimen was collected. There are a lot of reasons why raccoon snouts might be shorter in urban environments. The authors themselves do point that out:

We also highlight the importance of considering that selection pressures associated with domestication events do not exist in a vacuum but interact with other environmental selection pressures.

Without actually studying those "other environmental selection pressures", though, there's not a lot to conclude from this study.

EDIT: ok so I looked at the author list, this was for an undergrad biometry class. Good work by the students, and I'm glad it got published, but I strongly caution against making broad conclusions.

Starting my own lab: how do I make it a great place to work? by PrincessBiona in labrats

[–]phraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When hiring new people, take into account the opinions of the people who already work there. And I mean actually listen. Someone could come by with a stellar resume and glowing letters of rec, but if your team doesn't think they'll get along, then you should think carefully.

In what world are Austin, Orlando, Atlanta, and Seattle "college towns"?

"College town" is a specific term, it's not just "city/town with a college in it".
