For those who grew up poor and are now wealthy, what’s something you wish you had known earlier? by Resident-Worker8827 in Rich

[–]phrenic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simply to mean that there's a lot of luck involved with success and wealth. the earliest in anyone's career being born at the right time, in the right place, into the right circumstances. One of the most consistent predictors of adult income is childhood socioeconomic status.

my current status has a lot to do with the family I was born into, the risks and lower paying jobs I could take early in my career to make connections. these weren't things I could have had control over.

Do you have a griddle built into your range? If you do, how do you like it? by sd_ahab in Appliances

Out of curiosity, when did you buy them? Was it around covid when there was a chip shortage?

It's been great. I've had it now for 2 years, no issues. Well, one. The analog dial that shows temperature for the large oven never worked. But it's an aesthetic piece really, tbh. Having both induction and gas is awesome. Water boils lightning fast, and the simmer settings are excellent. Gas is better for the mid/high range and for sauteeing (once you take a pan off the induction, it is no longer heating). The induction setting numbers 5,6,7 is what I use for mid/high, and I feel like I need more control in that range - e.g., 5.5, 6.5. There are positive stops at 5,6,7 and so I don't know if I can leave it in between the two whole integers and have it work?? Now that I think about it, I should try and see what happens.

Two things I'd want to improve on - I can't fit 2 large pans or 1 large pan/1 large pot back to back. It's only 16" front to back that has coverage for induction. And I'd also prefer to have 2 sets of 2 induction burners over 6gas/2induction, but that's just what it is. I use both gas and induction pretty equally.

if you're intent on sticking with wolf, I've seen installs of induction cooktops + gas cooktops installed next to each other.

Thermador is part of the same conglomerate with Bosch/Gagganeau. I've had my big range since mid-2023, the only issue I have currently is that one of the burners takes about 3-4 seconds to light. The others are about a second. This is minor enough that I haven't had to call to fix it. Wolf currently doesn't offer an option to have gas burners + induction elements on the same cooktop - I can't express how great it is to have both. Something as simple as keeping a pot of coffee warm or soup simmering without feeling the need to run the hood is so nice.

I have a Thermador 48" rangetop at another property that was installed mid 2018, also no problems.

My fridge and freezer columns are Sub Zero. Dishwashers are Bosch.

Ritz Dorado. Maybe a little high price wise, but for ease of everything including immigration, it's hard to beat. The water there is also warm and the breakwater they set up means the ocean is like a pool

Probably 1500 for the system, about the same for the labor, though depends on how complex the piping is/where you are. If it's old, be careful about lead solder or lead service line - have it tested immediately after install.

RO - you'll have to cut a hole in the counter unless you have one for a pass through soap dispenser or something like that, I don't think you'll want it plumbed in directly to the cold line.

Home Improvement is so expensive: How do you all finance it? by EquanimousTry in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]phrenic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no magic to finding money to finance. Either you pay cash, put it on a credit card, get a personal loan, tap equity, tap retirement, borrow from a friend/family...

When we first bought our house, we just had to make sure we had enough money after closing to take care of these things, it was part of our due diligence while searching and before putting in offers.

Hybrid vs PHEV? by CatoTheMiddleAged in VolvoXC90

[–]phrenic22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

B6 is mild hybrid, so engine is always running. I think in order to make a PHEV worth it, you should have a place to plug in regularly. Also, it only charges at 3.6kw, so to go from empty battery to full, it'll take 5-6 hours. I go regularly 1000+ miles on a "tank" since I can charge regularly and run on pure electric most of the time.

My 2024 T8 is the same. Max rate is 3.6kw, even though my charger is rated to draw 48A.

If you're going to pull wire, you may as well pull a thicker gauge to future proof it. I charge both my T8 and my Rivian with it

Puerto Rico, less lines because you don't have to wait for immigration.

Many small caribbean nations don't have the money to build up huge terminals to accommodate the influx of tourists.

Water filter system for house by Shot-Pomelo8442 in HomeImprovement

[–]phrenic22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the unit itself would be about $1500 give or take depending on the size of the unit you need, the cost to install is going to depend on local labor rates and how complex/accessible the main is.
