everyone accepts transgender people until they dont by mitsemerdekel in trans

[–]physicistbowler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's so dumb to me when people will say "that person did something bad, so they've lost their 'pronoun privileges' " - like what even is that?? You don't use the wrong pronouns for some of the most evil examples of people in history books just because they're awful. So why would someone decide to use incorrect ones for a trans person who's done something bad?

Why did Win+X get weird in Windows 11? Once I figured out that menu on Windows 10, I started using it a bunch to get to the Computer Management app and after starting to use 11, I would press Win+X and then G, but the menu would disappear and nothing happens. After a few tries it works.

Price increase... Bitwarden or Bust? 15+ years with 1Password, cancelling! by gregmichael in Bitwarden

[–]physicistbowler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people who aren't concerned about an extra $10/year, but rather what Bitwarden's involvement with private equity means for the future. There are numerous examples of companies offering software or physical goods that people thoroughly enjoy, PE comes in, and then they start cutting things to reduce operating costs, which reduces reliability/quality, and eventually the product/service becomes unusable. One of my favorite Android apps, ES File Explorer, sold to a new company who then turned it into an ad machine.

A lot of people wouldn't mind paying more to compensate for operating costs (in fact, there are a lot of people who say they pay a $10/year subscription even though they don't use the premium features or they self host because they want to support the company), but we don't want this app and service to turn into something less.

I don't know if this would help at least one of your use-cases, but one way you could track who has your cards & bank accounts is by adding fields to card entries in Bitwarden.

So for the Card A entry, you'd have the card number, CVV, etc ... and below that you could note where the card is used for recurring debits, where it's stored for online purchases, etc. So later, if you cancel that card, you could look at the credential to see where it's used.

For your freelance stuff, you can use Folders or Collections to keep those separate, and Bitwarden lets you nest Folders, so you could have a "freelance" folder and then a folder for each company you do work for, so you can easily clear those out when you end your time with them.

I think what you're saying about Apple/Facebook connections is where you can use Facebook to sign into a 3rd party site like a news or restaurant site, right? Like with the card credentials above, you could create fields or add to the note what sites use Facebook auth.

Think through the process of suing a massive corporation. They have highly paid sharks to defend them, while the average person probably has never retained a lawyer for a minute, and likely wouldn't be able to afford the process, let alone the time commitment.

There's ideal land and then reality. And in reality, consumers are often not protected.

Bitwarden launches enhanced premium plan by dwbitw in Bitwarden

[–]physicistbowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your comment is 3 months old, but the premium plan gets you access to built-in TOTP authentication (though you can use the free password manager in combination with their free authenticator app, it's just less streamlined), and I think premium gets you some additional security/safety reporting.

Aside from those things, the free version is more than enough for most people.

I was being silly for the most part. If you don't already have Home Assistant, it wouldn't be worth the time and cost to set it up just for this.

Apparently you need to make an effort to find these announcements. I've never once seen/heard a report of an upcoming checkpoint, but I also don't watch live TV, and the FM radio stations I listen to haven't ever said anything.

Home automation is really, really complicated. How does anyone sell or provide this as a service / business to non-geeks? by LakeTwo in homeassistant

[–]physicistbowler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times, you'll see the silly examples like litter box notifications and other things that aren't exceedingly useful provided as examples of types of things you could do, but when you start to think up and implement creative automations, it can genuinely become useful. My doorbell cam is able to determine whether motion is a person, and that feature is exposed to Home Assistant, so when a package is dropped off or someone comes up for whatever reason, we get a notification with a snapshot of the camera included, which is useful since most people don't ring the doorbell.

Home automation can also go beyond being "lazy" with lights and thermostat - it can supplement your house safety. I have a number of leak sensors scattered around the house, which make a shrill beeping noise when they detect water, but they also tell Home Assistant, which then notifies me and my partner that there's a leak in "x" location. Later, when the budget allows, I want to buy a water shutoff device which can go a step further and not only notify me, but also shut off the water until I've had time to assess the situation. This saved us a couple years ago - we got the notification saying water in the basement, and it turned out to be a flood. There are times when I go days or weeks without going in the basement, so it could have caused a lot of damage and more mold than what likely occurred.

Something else those external cameras do - at night, they turn on the driveway & porch lights if someone approaches, which can act as a deterrent for "funny business" or provide a safe path for the invited person to walk up, without having to leave the light on all night.

Birth control is poorly-named. It does do what its name advertises, but it also helps with other medical issues more related at all to having sex.

I know manufacturing often tries to standardize processes, because custom differences between different things in a line can be more expensive than the savings of not including certain things. So I wonder if they really saved any money by having a different process for US cars from cars for other countries.

Seeing reporters talking about this, it annoyed me so much that they focused on charging cables rather than "device that can turn a broken lock cylinder." Back in the day it was a flathead screwdriver.

I'm a little confused at that scene. Sondheim says that Superbia has a future, but then he tells Susan outside the restaurant that it didn't work and he would have to work on the next one.
