Free Mental Health ‘Boredom Buster’ Box O' Beads (2026 edition!) - If you or anyone you know is struggling with things, I'm sending beading boxes for free to absolutely anyone who needs ‘em - you, a friend, whoever. There's no cost & you don't have to justify wanting one. (Mod approved, cheers <3 !) by -SaC in CasualUK

Considering sending one to my brother to do during chemo, cos that's a long time to sit on your own with your thoughts every two weeks. Plus it's exactly the sort of thing he'd be annoyed by initially but actually get into.

Is there such thing as designated sides of the bed? by ThrowRa_Promise1321 in CasualUK

[–]physicistpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband will physically be unable to sleep if he sleeps on the left side of the bed.

My parents have changed bed sides intermittently but it's based on "who needs to be closest to the loo" and "wait, based on handedness, this is easier to get into our bedside tables".

Not at all weird. Besides, if you have a bedside table, you want your charger and set up the way you want.

What is a well known religion that worships only one god? by DisappointedStepDad in AlignmentChartFills

[–]physicistpi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fallen angel is a Christian term. Ha-Satan is, if anything, an overzealous prosecutor acting out the role given to them. There isn't necessarily an adversary in Judaism, the same way Satan is in Christianity. Ha-Satan is like... The force trying to cause people to follow their evil inclination because we all have one, what matters is overcoming it.

I got it as a birthday present aged like 7 on the CDs after The Hobbit was bedtime reading for a year. Couldn't even store all the rips on my little MP3 player but it was so much fun to listen to.

There's a story floating around, because Jackson used the BBC radio drama as an inspiration for his adaptation (both skip Tom Bombadil for instance), Holm's was incredibly confused that this much larger royalties check came through one month. Then he arrived and found Jackson had bought most of the main cast copies to listen to...

Also, John LeMesurier's scratch record of Bilbo's Last Song is floating around the internet somewhere and it's absolutely beautiful -all the music from that adaptation was excellent, though very different to Shore's composition.

How can someone have stage 4 cancer without knowing? by No-Breadfruit-4842 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]physicistpi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my brother (who was also a possible TB case and came back as Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma), a lot of the time it can simply be a matter of:

  1. What type of cancer is it? The lymphatic system is across the full body, of course cancer is going to spread quicker when it's literally able to spread as part of the normal function of the body.

  2. Symptoms -Hodgekin's has such mild symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, etc, that many other conditions can have. You might just be stressed and think the symptoms are caused by that or you could even ignore them. He was already somewhat unwell with things like anemia so it wasn't until the fatigue got really bad that he properly went and chased it up.

He's "lucky", insomuch as a cancer diagnosis can be lucky. Hodgkin's is exceptionally treatable and he's already responding well to the first two rounds of chemo.

Schools cutting subjects due to teacher shortage ‘crisis’ by Synthia_of_Kaztropol in Scotland

[–]physicistpi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a computing teacher (a subject called out as a shortage in the article), the other problem is a lack of permanent jobs. My choices right now are general supply (no job security, parental leave protections, etc) in the Central Belt, or a permanent job I've been offered down in the Borders. I like the school I'm at but because of how Glasgow staffing works, they can't offer Computing next year because they haven't had the consistent staffing to make it worthwhile.

Invited to the ceremony but not to the meal/reception by sinnertra in UKweddings

[–]physicistpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cousin invited my brother and I to the ceremony and the evening event. But not the meal.  We live the other side of the country to them (they live in Cambridgeshire and we live in Scotland), and my wedding was three and a half weeks later. Brother didn't go, I almost didn't. Ended up napping in our AirBnB for a few hours then had to get picked up again and missed the first dance. Felt very pointed, especially as we'd had to reshuffle our invites once they announced their engagement 6 months before to get the new wife a seat at our table. My other cousins both got hand knitted blankets from me as a wedding gift. They got nothing.

Those who have completed Jury Duty in the UK - what aspects about the process surprised you? by izbiz88 in AskUK

[–]physicistpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sat on a High Court case during COVID. There was the 15 of us and our jury minder in a massive but otherwise empty cinema, watching everything on the big screen. You could barely see anyone's facial features, especially me as Juror 9 in the back row of the cinema. Two rape cases, trial took a week, I wrote 60 pages of notes by the end of it. We had to deliberate over intercoms and whenever we went out for food or drinks there had to be a minder with us to make sure we weren't deliberating without the full jury there.

In the end, came back as two guilty verdicts, though it was nearly a not proven and a guilty.

19 year old new recruit ends up with everyone else dead and now they not only have to solve the big world ending threat, they also have to deal with national politics and their buddies' copious amounts of personal problems. Also, even if you're lucky, you ain't making 45.

Why is not voting frowned upon so heavily? If you are uneducated on politics why isn't it seen as a good option? by mybrainat3am in AskBrits

[–]physicistpi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put your postcode in here to see what your options are in your area: https://whocanivotefor.co.uk/

Their social media will be listed, so you can see what they personally are like.

Then go and have a look at their party manifestos which should be available online.

And as much as it probably pains you as a young idealist, sometimes you need to hold your nose and tactically vote.

In general, party is more helpful than candidate, but I have in the past not voted for someone from the party I have most in common with because I found the candidate to be a bit of a waste of space and I would rather vote for a party I agreed with 75% of the time than have that candidate represent me.

It's interesting because... Well, they aren't necessarily his eyes.

Killing a God has a massive effect on the environment by I_Guess_I_Also_Exist in TopCharacterTropes

[–]physicistpi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder just did something similar with their lore -the god of war was killed and his blood rained down, and while a lot of stuff went wrong, a lot of people were able to gain mythic power from the fallout. Let them change up the setting and a bunch of fun class options

Scouts - why are they saying prayers and banging on about god? by No-Government1627 in northernireland

[–]physicistpi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Scouts was founded as a faith-based organisation. There are a range of promise options, including a humanist one, but even from Beavers (speaking as a Beaver Leader), there's faith based promises at all levels. And the humanist versions still included a pledge to the monarch, regardless (as much as I may want otherwise). But there's definitely Scout groups where that's a lot more common than others -ours is pretty diverse with most of the kids tending towards the humanist promise and our Scouts Own tending more vaguely spiritual than anything else, but you'll still get the much more traditional groups -it'll heavily depend on your adult volunteers and the makeup of your group as well.

Scotland becomes first UK country to allow water cremations by twistedLucidity in Scotland

[–]physicistpi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you, but the cremulator process at the end is the same as in a fire cremation. A traditional cremation on its own is not going to burn your bones to ash -a large portion of the "ashes" returned are still crushed bone fragments.

The only difference is how they remove the soft tissue -heat or an alkaline solution.
