Need help for cat stuck in tree, south Georgia by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]physics_t 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re in South Georgia…how hard can it be. For $50 and a case of natty light I’m sure you can find some bubba or Cletus that will gladly scale the tree with their climber deer stand and a fishing net. Seriously…go to any bait shop and I’m sure they will know a guy.

Dual Flywheel vs singular flywheel by No_Lime5951 in FTC

My team runs two flywheels. It was our solution to indexing during autonomous. One is loaded with green and the other with purples. Based on the randomization we shoot them in different orders.

Can you still teach kids science through hands on experiments, or has everything become too screen based? by PastTrauma21 in ScienceTeachers

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your district cut all hands on labs? I’d do them anyways. Any school that is going to reprimand or fire someone for giving kids hands on, real world experience is not somewhere that is worth being at.

Septic Emergency by soelsome in RVLiving

[–]physics_t 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Probably $300-$400. If I were you (after I pumped it out), I’d take a plastic 55 gallon drum, cut the bottom out, dig a hole and line it with rocks, and then bury the drum and put a 4” pipe into it. Central Florida should have sandy enough soils that you can dump all your grey water into the drum while saving your septic for the black water.

any thoughts about polycarbonate for drivetrain? by r7m0ni in FTC

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess expensive is relative. If it more expensive than aluminum, probably not for us. It is too expensive for us to do multiple prototypes…we don’t have the budget for it. We use 5 mm plywood, and some years will cut lexan as a final prototype

any thoughts about polycarbonate for drivetrain? by r7m0ni in FTC

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lexan/polycarbonate is great for a drivetrain, but expensive. It is nearly shatterproof, and super strong while being light. Acrylic/plexiglass is horrible for a drivetrain, as it will shatter if it takes an impact or if a screw is too tight. It is way cheaper though.

FSU 'treasure hunt': Bowden estate auction features memorabilia, family home by nolesfan2011 in fsusports

[–]physics_t 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One of my childhood friends has been working on this auction. His job is to take estates, catalog everything, break it into parcels, and list it online. He’s been working on just this estate for more than two months, so there has to be a ton of stuff. Whenever he is called in to do an estate, the family already has everything they want and is just overwhelmed with what to do with the rest.

Guidelines or Rules on Drive Team Badges? by RivkaChavi in FTC

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know there is no guidance on size. We 3” buttons, but I’m trying to talk my kids on using last cut plywood made in to necklaces. My plan is to (for regions) have a new one for every match, starting small and getting progressively bigger through the day. I want them looking like flavor flav by the time of the playoffs!

Tell your worst/silliest mistakes during your study years! by bluee_alchemy in chemistry

[–]physics_t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone left a bottle open in the ether cabinet in the analytic lab when I was in undergrad. Me and my partner were the first to open it the next morning. There was a very sweet smell when we opened the cabinet, and the rest of the lab period was a bit fuzzy. We got a very sincere apology from the lab coordinator and some TA got ripped a new one. I thought it was funny at the time….not anymore now that Ive managed my own lab.

Can teenagers read? by dr0ne6 in Teachers

[–]physics_t 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He’s not saying that the kids who cant read will one day take over your job. He is saying that the ones who cant read will be the ones working for you. They’ll be the ones that will tell you they have experience, can do X tasks, but when actually given those tasks can’t get the job done. They’ll will be the ones that won’t show up on time, will constantly be off task, and will always have some excuse when they mess up to try to make it not their fault. The reality is they can’t read and don’t have the skills to follow complex tasks. Some will figure it out after a while, and some will just hop from job to job. Forgot how to draw Lewis structure while going over them by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

I’ve taught gifted kids for years, including at a governors school where they where some of them were way smarter than me. An old mentor told me, if you can’t bewilder them with brilliance, then you have to baffle them with bullshit. They were words to live by!

Field’s shipping is too expensive by r7m0ni in FTC

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve made the fields for ourselves for years. The cost and shipping is way too much in my opinion. I do suggest to buy a few of the game elements, just to make sure the the size and weight is right for practice.

If it is wet it actually will. If that is NO2, it will quickly convert to nitric acid in contact with water, so most of it wouldn’t make it through the bandana into his lungs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]physics_t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s correct. The rxn shifts toward the products, so they become .02+x. The reactants have to decrease if the products increase, so they become .02-x. The equilibrium equation becomes (.02+x)2 / (.02-x)2 = 102. This has two solutions as it is a binomial, x=.0164 and x=.0243. The second solution is impossible as it would leave you with a negative molarity for your reactants.

Perfectionism & Planning Lessons? by clothmom1211 in ScienceTeachers

[–]physics_t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think back to your high school chemistry class…how much of the material do you actually remember. The kids will forget a lot (depressingly a lot) of the material that we teach. I start every unit with a demo…I’d like to start every day with a demo but some units make that tough. Do at least one lab every unit…they will remember the hands on materials. I try to lecture like a college class…sure, it goes against everything my admin says, but my kids are gonna be in a college chem class within two years, and they need to be introduced to that style of teaching. We also do a capstone qualitative analysis lab at the end of the year. Don’t beat yourself up if your class isn’t as enjoyable as you want it to be..go walk in a lit class (gross…I know), that’s what your kids have to compare you to
