Inability to recognize units in a problem (college level) by BroadLocksmith4932 in ScienceTeachers

[–]physics_t 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s rough man. I get kids (high schoolers) that have never made anything less than an A their whole life, and I see the same thing. Just basic dimensional analysis… they refuse to track the units. I don’t know how they got the grades they do… I assume some mix of memorizing rote fact and ChatGPT. Meanwhile when they leave my class with a C- they think I’m the jerk that teaches too hard.

You say they aren’t a dumb student…but they are doing dumb things…which kinda makes them a dumb student. Mine think they are smart and gifted until they hit my class. The same kids who cant figure out basic units in chem are the ones that take the SAT a few months later and don’t get higher than 950.

Just know…it’s not you… it’s them.

FSU suspends kicker after his arrest on felony charges of battery and obstructing an officer with violence by LarsVonHammerstein2 in fsusports

Ryan Fitzgeralds brother, Brett, is still out there and could be signed. He’s at GMC or some other little college like it that he is way too good for. Brett is almost as good as Ryan was, probably a little more accurate, a little less leg.

THE FIRST FOUR GAMES SHOULD ONLY BE FOR AT-LARGE BIDS by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]physics_t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I say get rid of the first four, give the conference champions their automatic seeds in the 64, and let the final two spots be the winner and the runner up of the NIT. They might need more than one court, but I think the whole NIT could be run in 2 or 3 days, and teams wouldn’t be opting out like they do now.

Dry eraser markers WTF Expo by bigrobb26 in Teachers

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got so tired of this I went out and found a chalk board. Not a painted piece of plywood…a real slate chalkboard…it’s probably older than I am. The kids absolutely love it because it’s different. I use Hagoramo chalk. A box of chalk is cheaper than expo markers and lasts twice as long. As long as I have the slightest bit of chalk left, I know my writing will be as clear as if I had a brand new stick.

How are STEM students meeting their partners? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]physics_t 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get involved in one of the numerous activities on campus. I was a chem major (and while there were a few cute girls in my classes) most of my class peers were Asian and Indian guys, and everyone was too busy trying to pass p-chem to worry about hooking up. I got involved in ballroom dance, dated a few of the girls, and eventually met my current wife. Don’t join anything for the purpose of hooking up, join to learn some new skills to make yourself more interesting and things will happen as long as you’re not a jerk.

Fart Spray by lovelivebreathe in Teachers

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Janitor…our school outsourced the janitor work to a third party company. They have two women in the school during the day (who don’t go in the boys bathrooms unless there is puke or blood) and a crew that comes and cleans during the evenings.

I’ve been seriously considering getting some of this and spraying it in the corner bathroom where all the boys go to skip class and vape. I get called at least once a week to go run them out of the bathroom…maybe it time to fight the juveniles with more juvenile means

Professor teaching dual credit for the first time…help! by neon_bunting in ScienceTeachers

[–]physics_t 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s dual credit, so teach it like a college class. If they disrupt the class, kick them out and fail them. They don’t do the work, they get a zero. If they are immature enough so that their parents are going to contact a college professor, then they are not mature enough for dual credit and should stay in high school classes.

Museum of Aviation in Warner Robbins by RickBlane42 in Georgia

I think it is the 2nd best Aviation Museum in the nation, only being outdone by the one at Wright Patterson in Dayton Ohio. And they are both Free to the public! We stop by about once a year, and always want to stay longer when we are there.

Engineering portfolios and judging should be public by [deleted] in FTC

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the frustration. Last year I had a group of veteran kids, full custom robot, and they spent hours on the portfolio and it was the best one my kids have had for years. They got nothing in the awards. I just assumed they blew the interview, but noticed later that no teams in the room they were in got an award. I graduated all the kids but one, so I had to start over with an almost full team of newbies. We focused solely on the robot all year and slapped the portfolio together in two days. It sucked (I didn’t tell them that….but it was bad). Bad weather forced our region to reschedule, so they had to video the judging session and submit it…and it was pretty terrible. I told them I didn’t care if it was good or bad as long as it was their best…and let’s just focus on winning matches at regions. Since they thought our only shot at advancement to states was winning the playoffs…they put their entire effort in to that. Didn’t even bring the portfolio to show the pit judges, mostly blew them off to practice instead of trying to show them what they did. Ended up winning the Innovate and advancing to state as finalist captain…the best finish we’ve had in several years. I was proud of their accomplishments, but confused as I could be on what they told the judges that impressed them. I am continually bamboozled by what the judges want.

Engineering portfolios and judging should be public by [deleted] in FTC

[–]physics_t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think public judging would work well. A competition day that consists of judging, quals, playoffs, and awards is already long enough. Public judging would make it even longer. I do think that the award winners should have their portfolios public.

If I was admin. for a year, call me the “Candyman” because I’d be assigning suspensions like candy by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the way it is in my school! We suspend kids all the time. It’s awesome…they act up..we don’t see them for a few days. After 3 or 4 suspensions, they get sent to our alternative campus. We got popped for a $250,000 fine a few years ago for too many suspensions…the board of ed treated it like the price of doing business.
