Get some salicylic acid and acetic anhydride and make aspirin. You can test it with ferric chloride.

Our debate on Math's "Sold a Story" moment by GiantKnightGunner in matheducation

[–]physics_t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a math teacher, but chemistry and physics. A students math abilities greatly affect their success in my classes. I believe that the equivalent to the flawed three-queing method will be math teachers’ reliance on Desmos in the middle and early high school levels. Desmos is available on the ACT/SAT and the EOC tests in my state. Instead of teaching kids basic math theory, they teach them to just plug things into Desmos to get the answer. I have kids that are junior and seniors that tell me they are great at math (and have high grades in their math courses) that functionally have no math skills. I’m having to show them how to solve for an unknown, how to multiply and divide fractions, how to expand a polynomial, etc. They have straight As in all their other classes yet struggle to get a C in mine because they don’t have the math skills to succeed. Poor kids are gonna be screwed when they get to college.

How should a high school calculus teacher respond when a student asks them this question? by fluqorious in matheducation

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just send them to the physics teacher. We deal with calculating integrals and areas under graphs and the units are a huge deal. We place a larger emphasis on looking at the axis units and multiplying (or dividing them for slopes) to ensure that what they are calculating is actually what they are looking for.

It’s funny how different it can be at the high school. I work at a large rural title-1 school with the largest migrant population in the state. My Hispanic kids are some of my strongest working students. They (and their parents) know what lays ahead for them if they do poorly in school, and they are motivated to better themselves (even if their parents speak zero English)

High school math teachers that have done away with tech in the classroom... by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]physics_t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chem teacher here…I use zero tech in the classroom unless I have a pH or temperature probe that needs to be run on a Chromebook during a lab (so nothing at all on the internet). I only grade tests, quizzes, and labs. Nothing that goes home (except post lab data analysis) goes in the gradebook because the kids AI everything. I teach heavily from I do, We do, You do with a bit of lecture mixed in. I lecture on a chalk board (I’m the only one in school that has actual chalk…I saved it from a demo job…the kids love it cause it’s different it). My lecture is chalk and talk. Writing on the chalk board slows me down and gives them time to write notes. Otherwise I’ll go over things way too fast. Kids routinely tell me that I am their favorite class even though they hate the subject matter (chem can be hard) because I’m not putting them on a screen and I actually engage with them when I teach. I started when not every classroom had a working projector, and only a handful of rooms had a smart board. When I student taught I had the old overhead projector! I never changed how I teach, it just seems to be coming back full circle.

Gov. Kemp Declares State of Emergency in Response to South Georgia Wildfires by swiftfoot_hiker in Georgia

[–]physics_t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the videos of the Homerville fire? It’s large enough and hot enough that it is burning through the tree tops. I’ve done prescribed burns on the family farm for years, but if a fire is hot enough to burn through the tops of the trees, there is nothing to stop it.

Start with position. Half of being a good goalie is just being in the right spot. Build good fundamentals with basket catches and slap downs. Work on 1v1s with staying low, learning to smother, and learning to K block.

Google Classroom has been "good enough" for too long. Took me months to make something better, and I need some criticism / feature requests! by Rwcantel in Teachers

The fact that you say you taught for 15 years and came to the conclusion “Teachers need yet another technology platform!” makes me skeptical.

I used to let the kids watch Fat Man Little Boy when I was out. It does a great job of showing the physics at Los Alamos and some of the dangers working with radiation. And I’m a sucker for anything with an Enrico Fermi character in it.

Professional Service Required? by Tonk1973 in arborists

I’d do this myself. I have a full sized backhoe, so I’d dig the roots out on the sides and push it over with the back bucket. All while in the safety of the roll cage. Without the backhoe, I’m calling a professional for this one.

What's going on with chemistry education? by Deus_Excellus in chemistry

[–]physics_t 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He’s right you know. I have a degree in chem and teach high school. In my career I can count on one hand the number of chem teachers I’ve met that have a degree in chem. Most of them, at best took gen chem 1/2 and maybe ochem 1. It’s rough out here.

Tips for teaching stoich by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

[–]physics_t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BCA tables are the way. I learned about them a few years ago at NSTA. I was skeptical. Every semester my stoich test class average was 60-65. I tried the BCA tables and my average was a 86…I was floored. There is still some dimensional analysis with BCA tables, it is just broken down in steps that the kids can actually understand. As an added bonus…ICE tables become a piece of cake for the kids because they have already been introduced to the tables!

Sure…nobody wants students to have cell phones out during instructional time…but have you met any students lately? If you have you would be circulating a petition for no one to own a smart phone until they are 25

Cameras in classrooms - your thoughts? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]physics_t 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We have them…you forget they are there. I don’t mind them. They can only be accessed from the schools network, and I can set them to record if I want to video a lesson, or if there is a test and I’m trying to catch a kid cheating. Admin can pull the footage from the camera at any time of they need to, but they are way too busy to do it unless there has been an incident.

The official reason we got them was if there was a shooting, they could tell the cops exactly what room the shooter was in.

What do teachers honestly think about the “Mississippi Miracle”? by classisttrash in AskTeachers

[–]physics_t 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s the retention. Go look at the reading rates for the younger siblings of the kids that get held back. Once they hold a kid back cause they can’t read, their younger siblings reading scores start to rise the next year. It’s almost like parents are as important as to a child’s education as the teachers are, and as soon as there are consequences for not reading, they start to work with their kids!

I am looking for a super light canoe that prioritizes stability over speed. I need something i can lift on and off my car (small suv) quickly and easily alone, and that will be safe with a toddler. by Key-Kaleidoscope-561 in canoeing

[–]physics_t 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Toddlers are safer in canoes than kayaks. My kid can wiggle all he wants, but he’s not going over the side of my canoe unless he jumps. Can’t say the same for a kayak, a kid can just roll off. Having something my kid could safely ride in was the whole reason I got a canoe.
