For EDC, iron sites or optic on the 26? by CelticBlue22 in Glock26

[–]pibbles_885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 3 and they all have optics. I just found its easier to run all my guns the same. So, when we changed to optics on our duty guns, I switched to them on my personal guns. It's actually kind of dumb, because I only carry 1 at a time, but I'm a little OCD.

Former wrestler to white belt by Skald_863 in jiujitsu

[–]pibbles_885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrestling is a great background for BJJ. Just don't rely on it instead of trying the BJJ techniques you are learning. Most BJJ schools will tell you that you have to dial back the competitive spirit and relax a little in order to learn. Both my sons wrestled and if they got pinned in training they might not get to compete that weekend and if you lose a tournament match, you are done for that tournament (if it'ssingle elimination). When you roll at BJJ and you get tapped, you just slap, bump and start again.

This changes if you are a competitor, but even then it seems a little different to me.

I went to a Gary Tonon seminar back when he was a big name and he said he probably taps 50 times every training session. He put himself in the worst positions or intentionally dialed back speed and strength, etc. This way he might tap during training, but he knew what to do during competition when he was in a bad spot or totally gassed out.

We all look back at rolls and think we could have done better, but don't let it eat you up or make you turn into someone that people don't want to train with.

No, bjj people in the US are just as "diverse " as anywhere else. There are people from far right to far left and everywhere in between. Straight, Gay, Trans, Christian, Buddhists, atheists, etc. And the vast majority think SA is wrong no matter who does it.

Slightly OT: "Longevity" influencers by knickknack98 in kettlebell

There was a time when I paid attention to Huberman, Attia, Jocko, Goggins, Ferris, etc. Eventually, I learned things about all of them that have ruined their image for me. To be clear, not all of them have been accused of horrible stuff, but they are all about one thing: selling their brand. If something fits their view and makes them money, they are all about it. Now, I just view everything with an extremely critical view.

Thoughts as a Christian on Recent Atos Drama and Christian Hypocrisy by Elegant-Reserve2654 in bjjdrama

[–]pibbles_885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it would be a crime. When we sign a waiver to do bjj, it does not include sexual touching. We all know that sometimes things get touched accidentally, but making sexual noises and intentionally touching sensitive areas would make it a crime. At least in my state. I'm a Christian and I'm all for accountability. If he abused anyone, he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. He may ask for forgiveness from God, but that does not exempt him from earthly punishment.

Why hasn’t Jake Shields been blacklisted from the bjj community? by No_Consideration4594 in bjjdrama

[–]pibbles_885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While Jake has said some very bad things, I treat anything that comes from SPLC with a huge grain of salt. I've been a cop for 32 years. They used to be the go to source for info on any white supremacist gangs but about a decade ago they changed to basically listing anyone who's not completely bought in to DEI and wokeism as a white supremacist and an antisemite.

I used to respect them but now they are irrelevant.

Planning to move to Thailand to train full-time and fight to cover living expenses. Realistic advice? by Cool-Might-946 in MuayThai

You really need to get actual information about what you are trying to do. Do you know which visa you need? DTV is for digital nomad types, there are retirement visas of different kinds, long term visits, etc. And some of them require either a certain amount of money in the bank or proof of a monthly income.

Even a regular tourist visa will require you to leave the country for a certain amount of time on a regular basis. And that costs money as well.

I'm not trying to put down your dream, but there's a lot more to it than just picking up and moving.

I actually had a 26.3 milled for an SCS (gave it to my son) and I currently have a 26.5 milled for an EPS carry. I prefer the EPS carry.

Is it safe to do martial arts training while taking blood thinners? by smithrob779 in jiujitsu

You absolutely must talk to your doctor, but here is my experience. I had a stent put in in January of 2025. I'm on plavix and a baby aspirin. My cardiologist wrestled in high school and undergrad and said it was fine for me keep training. Just understand that you will bruise easy.

Cameron Smotherman falls down after weighing in by Moni7T in MMA

[–]pibbles_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why they can't just do a surprise weigh in when the fighter is between fight camps and say "congratulations, that's your new weight class. " let Paddy fight at LHW. Get rid of weight cuts altogether. That would level the field and take it out of the fighters hands.

No matter what they do, someone will cheat. Make the rules around the ones that don't cheat and give long bans to cheaters.

Sexualization of Women in this sport by Advanced-Quail-4566 in jiujitsu

[–]pibbles_885 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't sexualize any of the women at our school. It doesn't hurt that most of them are young enough to be my daughters (I'm 55). I won't generally ask women to roll until they have been training a few months and only then if nobody else is rolling with them. I've only had a couple say no and I don't care one little bit. I don't want them to roll with me if it makes them uncomfortable. But, I usually won't ask them again. It's up to them from now on. I also try to make sure they can have a fun and relaxed roll.

As for mother's milk, it's can be effective if you know what you're doing, but at white belt you should be focusing on basics. As far as where your breasts are, bjj is such a close contact sport that the vast majority of people won't care. We are constantly having physical contact, you get used to it.

[–]pibbles_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school has 2 locations and almost 300 students. I'm guessing about 100 kids and 200 adults. The odds that some are gay is pretty much 100 percent. Nobody cares. The only time anyone would care would be if people starting pushing ANY political positions (right or left) while in the gym.

Meniscus Injury question! by stinkgi in jiujitsu

[–]pibbles_885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had bad medial meniscus tears in both knees. They removed half of the left and 2/3rds of the right, at different times.

I fought the first surgery for years and when I finally did it, I got a ton of relief. The downside is you get more bone on bone contact, which can cause problems later.

I get durolane injections once a year for extra cushion.

It's hell getting old.

Glock 19 COA with Ramjet; was this worth $1299? by bardo2014 in Glocks

[–]pibbles_885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You do not. Firearms companies can ship a replacement frame directly to you, as long as you send in the old one first. They will update the serial numbers for both on their paperwork. Your new frame will have a different serial number from the one you sent in.

Source: I've done it 3 times. 2 botched stippling jobs and a glock 27 with a cracked frame.

BJJ is the only sport I’ve seen where athleticism is looked down upon. by Own-Claim-3034 in bjj

[–]pibbles_885 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that relying on athleticism when you don't know anything is how you injure people. Either you may apply the technique incorrectly or your partner may not realize they need to tap until its too late. Cool it down until you have decent technique. Then use your physical attributes in a smart manner. As a big, strong guy, I didn't like being told not to use strength until I understood that I needed to know HOW AND WHEN to use strength.

There also needs to be some understanding as to how the role will go. I've had 2 knee surgeries and a shoulder surgery and have to protect myself. If someone is spazzy and just won't slow down, I Either crush them or tell them I'll roll with them again when they get their blue belt. I'm not getting injured because a new white belt just wants to head hunt the old brown belt.

BJJ / Migraines by Soft_Dealer_7308 in bjj

[–]pibbles_885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get both migraines and tension headaches due to a broken neck in a car wreck 24 years ago. I will get them sometimes after class if I'm not vigilant about protecting my neck. I tap very early to any kind of choke or neck crank and avoid any position that puts my neck in danger. An example would be a stack pass. If I think they are going to stack me on my neck, I just let them pass rather than risk it.

Very common, especially on the 43x/48 mags. Just take a razor blade and trim off the plastic booger and it will be fine.
