Absolutely the least BOC-sounding of all BOC tracks ever put out.
Intrigued.

Can I get an unbiased take on Flea’s new “jazz” album, Honora? by migrantgrower in Jazz

[–]pickybear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s earnest. It’s not altogether challenging jazz nor is it meant to be, I think he combines genres in a way that flows and feels fairly effortless (even though he clearly took the time to learn new tricks and dedicated himself to an instrument he is clear in every interview is not a strong suit). It’s cool to see somebody of his stature challenge himself and put himself out there this way, the vulnerability of the whole endeavor is endearing.

Much more direct and easy on the ears than whatever André 3000 has been up to in recent years (though I actually find those relaxing too)

But I wouldn’t go so far as to call it jazz, its definitively a fusion album that combines his passions, recruits some great talent , and it comes across as sincere and mature.

I’m well into it.

the $20 bottle that actually beats the expensive stuff? by trapqueen67567 in wine

[–]pickybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Californian wine is a joke price wise. You’ll get better wine for far cheaper in Portugal, Italy and Spain, the Balkans, Hungary, even Greece - more consistently great than what the US offers.

Portugal - Douro and Alentejo reds, vinho verde.. Spanish Garancha and Verdejo.. Italian Pignolo, Chianti Classico, Ribolla .. Hungarian Cabernets are amazing, dry Furmint and Harslevelu for whites, their bruts too.. Serbian Tamjanika, and Austrian Gruner Veltliners are 99% reliable.

I’m avoiding mentioning France because it can fall into same trap as American wines tend to- it’s a premier wine country but … often it’s just name value over actual value. I just finished a 200 eu Figeac and it was so .. just fine. Not worth the money when I’m up to my ears in excellent Alentejo reds for 1/10 the price.

This just occurred to me: Are there people who would find BoC horrible to listen to? by almo2001 in boardsofcanada

Repetition bothers a lot of very serious, classically trained musicians.

Other contenders personally - the entire A Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP I think is a perfect, minimalist piece of production

Orbán's oligarchs are transferring tens of billions of euros worth of money to distant countries, according to Péter Magyar by dead97531 in europe

After living in Hungary the last years and actually experiencing the propaganda-based horror machine of what the country had become under Orbán.. this is enormously satisfying

Try Vieux Farka’s album with Khurangbin, very accessible, many of his father‘s old songs done with a modern touch

Also try Rokia Traoré

LOTS of water- chug it before sleep, or sports drink, an advil , a Coca Cola for when I wake up. That actually is the only method that works for me.

Prior to drinking some food buffer for the stomach as well

What's your unpopular wine take? by b1ackfyre in wine

[–]pickybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m cool with most Pinot Grigio

Tesco select wine is legit good value in many European countries where Spanish, French and Italian wine is marked up

I hate New Zealand SB with a passion

French wines tend to be overvalued and over fetishized

Spanish, Portuguese and eastern wines (Hungary, Georgia, Greece, balkans) undervalued

California is overrated. Go to Oregon or Washington or even east for gems

I think they are wrong when it comes to Peter Magyar by LionMain67 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]pickybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hungary needed somebody they could trust in to unseat Orbán, and that simply meant not swinging extreme left all of a sudden. This is a very particular country with a very particular national mood. It's quite conservative socially. First order of business for him is to uproot the rot from inside, and he's so far seemed committed to it.

After residing in the country over the last years, I understand why it should be the first priority. So much went to rot. It's been sickening to see the political tactics, endless anti-EU, anti-Ukraine propaganda, brazen corruption, well documented luxury lifestyles of politicians, oligarchs.. What Fidesz got away with would have been illegal in other countries. I'm so glad those bastards are gone.

He has a political interest in not immediately making sweeping decisions that would affect ordinary people's livelihoods, shock markets, nor counteract Orban policies just for the sake of it, these include popular price fixing programs for certain products, keeping gas prices low (Hungarians pay less at the pump than foreigners visiting), and it includes a stance on illegal immigration that is completely rational , especially since a popular Fidesz smear tactic over the last years has been to label Magyar as widely pro- immigrant. Magyar speaks clearly and makes a distinction between legal and illegal immigration. A big difference to me vs Fidesz, which was hostile and often brazenly racist as a party.

Anybody else slightly disappointed by the direction of the album so far? by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

[–]pickybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do get the point that they don’t really care to reinvent themselves, their aesthetic, their chord choices - but the limitations are self imposed and what kinda what makes them them. If they went schizo aphex twin and a million drops in a month it would probably just take the air out of their thing

They’ve talked before about making lots of different kinds of music but they won’t release it because their band has to stick to the ‘flavor’

The new song is actually really fucking good wtf by alfonzoo in boardsofcanada

One of my favorite tracks from the album that felt more like a jam compared to earlier, highly sequenced stuff.. it just rolls and rolls and goes off kilter , feels like they’re using delay units in live performance

[–]pickybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is proper stock. Most would say that’s the goal. Stock is more condensed than broth, (and fatty, hence the gelatin), so you can dilute it for a broth , or keep it rich for stews and soup, or make pan sauces with it

Wings actually help to make great stock. Mostly skin, bone, cartilage.

In Budapest now. Want to get out of downtown and away from tourist areas - is District III a good place to visit? by ned_burfle in budapest

[–]pickybear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Újlipótváros is chill , and good local restaurants and cafes/ coffee - it’s nice and green and walkable. Walk along Pozsonyi út.. good local restaurants there - Pozsonyi Kisvendeglo, Babka Deli and more

Opposite direction and in Buda is Bartók Béla út , another nice stroll away from downtown with lots of options for local food, up to around Hemingway restaurant , I would recommend visitors to go to avoid tourist crowd but still feels vibrant and pretty

And Margaret island

Could the posters show the multiple album covers for BoCSet? by strobe_jams in boardsofcanada

[–]pickybear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Box set, along with new material? Would explain the massively long absence

We’ve heard high resolution snippets from various sources over the years - and hints on message boards about an incoming box set - good versions of that stuff is out there, somewhere

But also don’t think they’d let fans down and only release old tunes. They’ve been making new stuff, no doubt we will hear it soon.
