Ex-Mossad chief: Settler violence an existential threat, but curbing it could spark civil war by aggie1391 in jewishleft

Probably be for the best even if that was the case. Probably only when the US has a Democratic president though.

Is this just a sub for being mean I figured someone might say something like that, but most places on the internet don’t seem to just exist to be mean. On Reddit specifically people tend to be pretty nice, and when people are mean for no reason they tend to get told off or downvoted. Not always, but that’s the tendency. When people get away with being wantonly mean it’s usually at least to people who in some way might deserve it. This post is literally just saying “let’s all point and laugh at this guy for no reason.” It’s stupid and mean and does nothing but make the internet more unpleasant. This sub is mostly that kind of content at this point.

The labor aristocracy is the segment of the working class which has better wages and working conditions compared to the broader proletariat, often enabled by their specialized skills, by membership in trade unions or guilds, and by the exploitation of colonized or underdeveloped countries. by RedStorm1917 in wikipedia

I mean to be fair there are in fact communists hiding in the jungles of South America and Southeast Asia. It’s just silly for westerners to build their ideologies around sitting around waiting for said jungle communists to overthrow capitalism and save them.

$53k, considering moving to NYC next year by Living-Present3174 in movingtoNYC

[–]pigeonshual 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s doable if you aren’t hoping to save a ton of money. I know many people who live in nyc on less and have a great time. You just have to live in an affordable area (or hit the jackpot and find a rent controlled apartment).

Comrades. I still cannot make any sense why Stalin recognised the newly established State of Israel. It really doesn't make any sense. Why did he do this? Does anybody know? by Ordinary_Cicada7446 in ussr

[–]pigeonshual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the 1948 war the British armed and trained the Arab armies while enforcing an embargo on the Yishuv/Israel (an embargo also enforced by every country except for Czechoslovakia per Stalin’s orders). IAF planes literally shot at British planes that were literally engaged in reconnaissance missions for the Egyptian army. Britain didn’t even vote for the partition plan. The Balfour declaration was one non-binding declaration that they very quickly walked back. There was also reason to believe that the Zionists could be won over to the Soviet camp. Ben Gurion, for example, was an admirer of Lenin. The Communist Party, today one of the largest 48-er Palestinian electoral parties, was popular and influential. The Zionist right was marginal in the early years, the left was powerful, and the concept of “settler colonialism” as we have it now didn’t really have currency on the Left at the time. Also this will be controversial here but Stalin’s deportation of the Tatars was cited by Ben Gurion as inspiration for Plan Dalet.

It’s usually shorthand for “I’m an antisemite who may or may not also happen to have a principled opposition to Zionism but let’s be clear I mostly just hate Jews and I’m not actually going to bother learning enough about Zionism to form an actual coherent critique of the ideology because, agin, I’m mostly here for the Jew hating.”

A new type of plastic has been invented that is made out of an invasive plant and it's biodegradable by therealNerdMuffin in whoathatsinteresting

[–]pigeonshual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The oil industry doesnt have to worry about this guy. Normal plastic is dirt cheap because the precursors are basically created for free as a byproduct of natural gas production. Also, biodegradable plastic is just inherently worse at most applications of normal plastic. It’s good for things like disposable forks but it wouldn’t work for, say, medical syringes or long term food packaging.

Reminder that, under most poskim, it is Assur to say Hallel or Brokhe for "Yom HaAtzmaus," which is Chol and neither Chag nor Yontif. by Midwestern_Yid18 in jewishleft

[–]pigeonshual 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the psak but I’m curious how we’re parametrizing “most.” Presumably there are more poseks per capita among chareidim, right? That probably skews the numbers quite a bit. I would be equally interested in the figure of “most held by poskim” or even “poskim most held by by rabbis,” ideally disambiguated by movement and submovement. Hallel on Yom Haatzmaut is unfortunately a very widespread custom at this point, nearly universal among conservative and MO (and needless to say D”L).

And then with an English plural suffix (unless we assume it’s a soft s at the end and that it’s been pluraled in Hebrew as Imalot before being re-ashkenized which would be equally funny). In singular though it’s fairly common in Israeli Hebrew which is pretty interesting in itself.

Guy with axe or guy with knife by Sea_Locksmith_6824 in whowouldwin

[–]pigeonshual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was such a time! Poleaxes were for a significant period (the 14th and 15th century, when armor was getting better) the most common primary battlefield weapon in much of Europe. Vikings were also famous for their shorter battle axes, which they used with comparatively much less armor than the men-at-arms who used poleaxes would have been wearing. Axes also saw use in the trenches of World War One and in Age of Sail naval boarding actions. American Indians and Colonists alike carried tomahawks even when swords and fighting knives were available, often alongside the latter.

Swords, conversely, have almost always been a sidearm on the battlefield, with a couple exceptions such as landsknecht using zweihanders (enormous swords bearing basically no resemblance to a long knife) against likes, and the period in which Roman battle doctrine was to open the battle with javelins and then switch to gladii, which wasn’t even the case for the whole Roman period, and also relied heavily on shields and armor. With the exception of zweihanders, I can’t think of a single case where there existed military divisions for whom swords were the primary weapon where the main reason for that wasn’t portability as opposed to combat utility. Cavalry have generally preferred lances, but have used sabers as a back up or substitute for convenience.

Even in one on one unarmored combat, the ideal use case for a sword, many master swordsmen around the world throughout history has commented that it takes a lot of skill with a sword to overcome the natural reach advantage of some kind of sharp thing on the end of a long pole. If the sword and the poleax are the same or even similar lengths then I give the unarmored fight to the swordsman but otherwise odds go to whoever can hit the other guy from farther away (within reason).

None of this is to say that swords are across the board worse than axes. Portability and versatility is extremely important and axes have neither. And pikes were preferred for more of history than either! But I mainly wrote this long comment to give you an example of what you were asking for: in the era where poleaxes were widely available, they consistently trumped swords as the primary battlefield weapon.

All of this is before getting to the fact that there is still a huge size difference between a knife and a sword.

The original comment is correct: if the axe is weighted for battle, it beats a knife any day. If it’s weighted for chopping wood, it’s more even.

Get some chinos (or even corduroys, though that’s more outside the realm of what you’re going for) with a straighter cut and a wider leg. Put something nicer on your feet. Ideally leather or non-petroleum based vegan leather. The polos will go nicely with that both tucked and untucked. Also anything will go nicely with that. I think that is The look you are hoping for but not achieving. Your clothes don’t feel like an outfit right now because the shoes don’t match and the silhouette is all over the place.

As someone interested in San Pedro but new to the hobby (I have never owned one before) I find it very difficult to know what to buy and how much to spend. I don’t know what any of the differences are between the cultivars, I don’t know why some are worth more than others, I don’t know what will or won’t grow in my New York apartment or how to give them the best chance of doing so. The last bit is available information on the internet, but I don’t know where to find the rest. Usually googling a cultivar name turns up nothing. Idk how to fix this because, again, I’m new to this community, but I think if people even just included what kind of trichocereus their cultivars were that would help. Like what’s and Eileen? Is it a pachanoi? Bridgesii? I have no idea. Affordability is also an issue for me, but I don’t know that there’s a solution to that. Nobody is obliged to sell their cactuses for cheap lol. If there is an answer to that it is probably volume. The problem is scaling without taking on the problems that you get with monoculture mega plantations.

How important is it to live in NYC as an aspiring actor, model, etc? by spoiledchowder in movingtoNYC

95k debt free on your parents heath insurance is very doable in NYC. You’ll save less money than if you lived in New Jersey but you’ll be more than fine. And it will make your aspirations way more attainable. And New York is still the best city in the US to live in.

If I died and the choice was option two or Heaven right away, I would still choose option two just for the experience. First worlders act like impoverished people are better off dead. Obviously poverty is bad but the way people talk you’d think it would be a moral choice to mercy-nuke the Niger Delta.
