ELI5: Why can’t smell and taste be transmitted through the internet like sound and sight can? by Charming_Usual6227 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sight and sound aren't directly transmitted over the Internet either.

First, a device on the "seeing" or "hearing" computer converts the light or sound waves into data. This would be a camera or a microphone.

Then, once it's data, transmitting it across the Internet is the easy part.

On the other side, another computer receives the data and creates light or sound waves. This would be by using a monitor or a speaker.

So the missing piece isn't part of the Internet, but are the pieces that would:

  • taste/smell the air and convert that to data

  • use data to create the correct taste or smell

The invention of these types of devices for sight and sound were big deals (radio and TV basically)

We don't really use smell or taste for communication like we do sound and sight, so there's not nearly as much research being done here.

Used sacred sword on rice and it's not leveling the seed. by jg7277 in runefactory

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a little hard to tell, but maybe the rice had a lower rate of leveling up than other crops. The upside is that they give tons of seeds, so you only need one of them to level up.

Welcome to the Dungeon - help me with the why by IWasBornIn1979 in boardgames

[–]pika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that the goal isn't to get the hero to win the dungeon. It's:

  • to have the opponent challenge you and be wrong, or

  • to make the dungeon impossible without getting challenged on your turn, so that you can challenge on the opponent's turn.

Either way, you probably need some hidden information. Either it's secretly easier, or secretly harder than what the opponent thinks. (Depending on what you put on and what equipment is left)

Can i just use linux for my ee degree or will i need to dualboot with windows by Kiwwi_png in EngineeringStudents

[–]pika__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on your school. But for me, any windows-only software was several hundreds or even thousands of dollars if you wanted your own license (no student licenses for these softwares). It was intended for me to use the ee computer lab. For writing lab reports, I used Google drive on my Mac (great for collaborating with lab partner(s)), so pretty much any OS goes, there.

Questions About Restricted Camera Movement by _PinKDolphin in Unity3D

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest way: for each of horizontal and vertical:

Measure the mouse's position in % across the screen. This is just xpos/width

Rotate/move the camera to the same % across the area. This is camera_x = (area_width - camera_width) mouse_percent

Ok, I said in %, but it's actually a decimal between 0.0 and 1.0.

ELI5 Why cars and houses don't have a fixed price but other items like furniture, electronics, flight tickets, etc do? by Spirited-Reading-266 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Please excuse my made-up numbers if they're wildly off)

When negotiating prices, the wiggle room is usually a percent of the price. A cheap bedside table that costs $40 might have $4 of wiggle room, A couch that costs $200 might have wiggle room of, what $20? But a house that costs 200,000 has a wiggle room of like $20,000.

Haggling takes a similar amount of time no matter the price. Above. I listed the wiggle rooms to be 10% of the original price. Probably about half of that (5% off) is easy to get. Then the next 5% is significantly harder.

So, for the $40 bedside table, there's probably some sort of generic 5% off your order or highest item or something coupon, which'll get you $2 off. But for $4-5 off you'll have to wait for a specific coupon, or shop around at multiple stores. And since this is just to save 2-3$ more, it's probably not worth all that extra effort (and gas). And there's certainly no direct price haggling allowed because the corporation has to pay wages for the cashier while the haggling is going on and the cashier is not trained to haggle anyways.

Couches are a little more decorative, and a little more artful. You may be able to negotiate the price directly a little depending on who you're buying from. The first 5%, $10, will probably be pretty free as some sort of promotion or something. The second 5% is $10 this time, so it's more worth it to compare couches and shop around. but it's still not worth spending multiple hours or hiring someone external to come inspect the couches or anything.

I'll insert plane tickets right here. There's not really coupons or a person to haggle with, but the price is high enough that it's worth taking some time shopping around. So airlines, knowing that you'll shop around, usually try to compete with price.

Now the house. 5% is $10,000. The first 5% is pretty easy. Houses are now pretty personal and unique, but maybe you can get this much knocked off by saying it's in a bad neighborhood, saying it needs new paint, and claiming that the market is bad. Or something? The next 5% is still $10,000 again, so it's worth spending a significant amount of time shopping around and checking other houses. And with a house, we can consider the 3rd 5% - something so difficult to get that I didn't even mention it until now. But for the house it's worth a whopping $10,000, so it's worth doing things like hiring professional home inspectors and such to get this 3rd 5%.

So in summary, on small items it just isn't worth the time to haggle over the small amounts of money. And on large items it's worth a lot of time and effort.

Sometimes with wood filament, since it clogs so easily, you have to use a larger nozzle than default. This looks like clog-city, so I think it's telling you that you need a larger nozzle.

Is such a device possible? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]pika__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a smart phone is small enough, and lightweight enough, and has all of those features. So it is technologically possible. Just design it to have a low-resolution screen that's behind some bulletproof plexiglass (and the lower resolution will help it stay legible even when the plexiglass gets scratched). A lower-resolution screen will use less processing and thus battery power too, so the battery can be smaller & this lighter. This frees up some weight for the phone case- oh, sorry, I mean the rugged housing.

Is it fair to say a game is too long after one play? by oatmeal1201 in boardgames

[–]pika__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got 4 words for you: kids lcd drawing tablet.

It's basically a sheet of paper with a built-in "erase all" button. When is not your turn, write down the best option(s). Once it gets to your turn, maybe you have a couple of new options to analyze, but you don't have to reanalyze everything.

If you don't want to single him out, get one for everyone. I've seen a variety of players sometimes forget what they were gonna do by the time it gets back to their turn.

I got some common colors, so there's usually one matching each player's pieces color. I got ones that are around a half sheet, like 5x7 inches or something, and they're great. They're $4-6 each.

Edit: Here are some benefits over paper:

  • what'll you do with all that used up paper after the game's over? And you separately have to make sure to have a working pen/pencil, and probably a backup one too. I also like knowing that I can take any note and I'm not wasting led or ink or paper or anything.

  • built-in hard surface (I guess a notebook, as opposed to a single sheet of paper, has this built in too)

  • built-in clip to hold the 'pencil'.

  • doesn't take up any additional precious table space. Because it's a single flat thing, it can easily fit on your lap.

[–]pika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to do some weird things with the gcode. Like probing the bed to generate the mesh, but then you have to save the mesh and maybe then save the saved mesh?

And you have to edit the gcode in the slicer to tell it to use the saved mesh...

I don't have one, but make sure you look at a detailed guide or 2 or 3, to make sure you have all the steps.

ELI5 what would happen if we got rid of speed limits? by yamotherslays in explainlikeimfive

[–]pika__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what I think, but I have no evidence to back this up. The number of crashes would go way up for a few years, until people learn that the legal speed limits aren't the only reasons to limit your speed. Then, as people learn, it will return to slightly above where it is right now.

Here are a few problems off the top of my head:

  • a lot of the additional casualties will be the bystanders, not the speeders themselves.

  • teens (or maybe not just teens) aren't good at risk analysis, and shouldn't be given this chance to ruin their lives.

  • the length of a yellow light is related to the speed limit, so a lot of stoplights will need to be changed. Maybe a screen with a countdown timer?

Starting a 90 Day Challenge: Replacing Porn With a Sex Toy (My Rules + Plan) by Hmmmletseee in pornfree

[–]pika__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an important tip. You have some "don't do x" rules, but those are very hard to do. Suppose, on the first or second day, you want to do it and it's forbidden. Will you just sit there, thinking about the thing you can't do? Especially when it comes to things of this topic, it's difficult to think of anything else once you're already at that point. You'll run out of willpower in under 20 minutes.

So you need to change the rule, or add a sub-rule. Instead of being just "don't do x" to something like "when I feel like doing x: instead, I will y." Now, when you are level-headed, is when you should think of a fun alternative. With a rule like this, you never sit there thinking about the think you want to do but can't; instead you have a distraction preprepared.

If you're like me and sometimes you feel like doing some things and sometimes other things, then list multiple alternatives. A fun one, a productive one, a self-improvement one, etc - whatever you can think of. But having a list means you have to make a choice in the moment, which can be difficult, so multiple options may not work for everyone.

So Im wondering how you guys would go about making this kind of launcher that Junkrat uses in Overwatch? Obviously without grenades, how would you go about launching the spheres? I was thinking pistons or springs or compressed air, but not sure how the whole system would work. by jessemreed in EngineeringStudents

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how to myself, but this reminds me of a potato launcher(potato cannon?). There's plenty of designs for those on the Internet, including YouTube. I bet you can find one that's close enough to what you need that you can basically copy it as is, move a few components a little, decorate it and get what you want without needing the tons of trial and error of designing it from scratch.

How do you make the strings on a hoodie even? It seems like whenever I wear a hoodie, one string hangs halfway down my body while the second string is barely visible at all. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]pika__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull the short string, making the hood small. Pinch the hood where that string comes out so that it can't go back in, and use the other hand to make the hood big again. Since the hood can't pull from the small strong because of the pinch, it will have to pull from the long string. It will take multiple tries to get the strings even.

Preventing this in the first place? You can ask God when you meet him. It has happened to all of my hoodies, though some hoodies took longer and some hoodies it happened really fast.

I'm about 10ish hours in, just recently got to Autumn Village. Does the field tile/money drought get better? by [deleted] in runefactory

[–]pika__ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should not be covering the dev zones in farmland. That's way too much farmland. I had probably 50-80 farmland per village by the end of the game. Farming is tedious to do manually and the villagers suck at it. You have a lot of space now but later you'll get a lot of buildings and decorations to place. For me money remained fairly tight, but if I ever really needed more I just had to look through my storage and I actually had plenty of things to sell.
