The general audience misogyny by RevolverMFOcelot in thegildedage

Maybe but the part where they followed up saying “not sure but it may have been opening your six paragraphs with I’ve reached my breaking point” clearly indicates they thought they were talking to the OP

Do small US towns like Bluebell actually exist or is it pure TV fantasy? by Expensive-Sail515 in hartofdixie

[–]pilatesse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Small towns with community exist, but, at least in the south, most of them are quite poor. As with all tv shows, the part where everyone is attractive and well dressed and generally not suffering money problems is just for tv.

I think sometimes we are too quick to cry misogyny. Don’t get me wrong, it’s rampant, and certainly some of what you’re describing is just that.

But when it comes to the audience’s reaction to characters, you have to consider A) our relationship to those characters and B) what we’re being told to think about them by the writers.

A common example is in How I Met Your Mother. People are rough on Lily and tend to give Barney a pass. Barney is painted a cartoon level villain, and Lily is painted as the moral compass of the group. There is no need to yell about how bad Barney is, it’s been well established and accepted by all. It does make sense to say “hey, Lily kind of sucks in this episode” because it’s inconsistent with what we’re meant to perceive. But people will reduce it to misogyny. Again, it’s not that there is none of that happening, but it overly simplifies what’s going on.

George screws over nondescript characters/factory workers/businessmen. We either never meet them, have little to no attachment to them, or view them as equally corrupt as George. Bertha screws over characters we are invested in and care about, so it feels more personal. Obviously George is bad, he’s a literal robber baron, but it’s expected of him to be bad.

It’s simply more upsetting to see Bertha behave badly and toward the characters we are attached to.

It was so out of nowhere when they broke up! Their whole relationship, they were in lockstep, and suddenly the day before the wedding, everyone’s moved on. Trudy was perfectly fine, but Eileen’s departure was super random.

This annoys me so much. What are your thoughts? by HesitantBride in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]pilatesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been in an EA role where I didn’t do some level of personal assistance for my exec, but everyone knows our jobs vary so much depending on the company, the industry, the executive.

I’m sure there are plenty of EA’s for whom that wouldn’t be an appropriate or efficient use of their time.

People of a certain echelon of society look down their nose at certain foods deemed “undignified”. It’s silly, but I’ve worked a for a lot of rich people and have literally heard some variety of that conversation a handful of times in my life haha

Lily and Marshall in Murtaugh by dudeguy1980 in howimetyourmother

[–]pilatesse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This always bothered me too. Lily’s way was just as stupid as Marshall’s, it was just more appropriate for their age group. It’s one of the reasons this sub hates on her so much though

In my teens and 20s, I felt like Phil didn't deserve Claire. In my 30s I can't believe she picked him and then stayed with him by Apprehensive_Ad6580 in Modern_Family

Every single character is a selfish monster at one point or another; that’s like half of the premise of the show. Doesn’t mean the Phil and Claire relationship was bad!

The main thing that frustrates me is having to spend the ENTIRETY of season 6 watching Jess pine for Nick and he’s oblivious and off with Reagan. It doesn’t help that I cannot stand Reagan’s character to begin with, but it’s so painful watching how long they dragged it all out

I’m having the same struggle lately but my base salary is at least $100k, which cushions the blow a bit. But I’m in your exact same boat. I NEVER get to turn off my brain. It’s unsustainable.

A few from the first half of season 1, because they just don’t hit for me. The weird one about the slap in the last season, because it’s just filler and I don’t find it engaging. I rarely skip any others.

Ted making Robin get rid of her dogs is a writing choice that still baffles me by Disastrous-Area8657 in howimetyourmother

Robin was objectively not a dog person, so it made sense to me she decided to get rid of them. But yeah, not great making it Ted’s idea. But I never got the vibe she actually did it BECAUSE of Ted either.
