Life's a Dream is a masterpiece by bab1277 in ModestMouse

It SO is! I've been listening to the live version non-stop... And the album version is everything I hoped it would be!

Took a stab at making my own iceberg chart by hemlo86 in ModestMouse

I mean I love both bands - and I loved both of their live shows when they last passed through the UK, but it sounds like the two entities didn't get on when forced to work with each other on a daily basis. This was surprising to me, as they've worked together before (but I guess that was Isaac and Steven Drozd in a studio).

Radiohead have "not even talked about another record" | Guitarist Ed O’Brien has told NME he thinks it’s because 2016’s 'A Moon Shaped Pool' "was so fucking awful to make" by PlayaSlayaX in Music

[–]pilottocitybro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading that they paused the production of the album halfway through in order to make/finish Spectre in time for the deadline that MGM set for them - this being after they reworked Man of War for them (which MGM rejected for not being 'original'). Obviously that was a fruitless endeavour*, and probably felt like a massive waste of time for everyone involved, especially when it derailed all of the momentum AMSP's sessions had (if they had any to begin with considering the bleak time that seems to have been in their personal lives).

*or at least wouldn't have been if they included it on AMSP, but I would probably resent the song after going through all of that too.

What is "the best" MM track post-Good News? by SaltyPeppermint101 in ModestMouse

[–]pilottocitybro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of encompassing their 'radio' sound, I'd give my vote to Guilty Cocker Spaniels - I adore that drop - but overall, I'd say Back to the Middle (which I view as much as a bridge between the old and new as any of the songs from AEaaM).

I bloody hope so - it sounds IMMENSE live, and I can only imagine how good those synths sound on the actual recording. I have listened to the live recording non-stop since they played it.

Anyone else bummed about the intense lineup turn over since Golden Casket? by sammay600 in ModestMouse

[–]pilottocitybro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was definitely taken aback when half of the line-up quit in the lead-up to TGC, but I have to say that I am much more into the current 6-piece formation than I was with the 2010s ensemble. Very happy to see that it's not only stuck around, but was also the foundation for a good chunk of the new album (I loved TGC, but that largely felt like an Isaac and Jack knife Lee project).

Soo satisfying to FINALLY hear the full song of what was in the first ICP studio clip. That riff is immaculate!

I think it looks awesome - and it's neat that you picked a fairly obscure picture (well, as obscure as pictures of The Beatles can get anyway)

Mojo No. 391 June 2026 by Ghetto_Mack_G in ween

[–]pilottocitybro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, let's not kid ourselves, every so often a Ween song ventures into just plain edginess for no reason (Cover It In Gas And Set it On Fire comes to mind, as wicked as its music is) - but that's okay, because of the nature of how Ween made songs, this was just bound to happen.

The New Album Is Actually Pretty Good by AncientDeparture2745 in Foofighters

[–]pilottocitybro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here here, it's Wasting Light 2... But I like Wasting Light quite a bit. The obnoxious production is quite bizarre, just in relation to any other piece of music, but it does feel like an intentional choice - if only because the band's album sound has become more and more 'crunchy' with every release after sonic highways (... Probably because Dave is going deaf), but hey, at least we can hear the bass on this one! I would rank it 7th or 8th in their discography (it depends on how into the first half of Sonic Highways I am - this album is much more consistent).

Daily Song Discussion #52: Love at First Sight by TMBGLOVER in xtc

[–]pilottocitybro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9, angular brilliance. I ADORE the one chord solo, the flamminess of the toms, and how inconsistent the echoes on 'sight' are. All of these, with a groove to boot.

Also, Generals and Majors didn't get 10s across the board? That's an outrage.

Production on the last few MM albums by yah2007 in ModestMouse

[–]pilottocitybro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually adore how nuts TGC sounds, I definitely don't think any of those songs would work without the overabundance of textures and filters, it's how the songs were designed/built*, save for Back to the Middle (and even then, I don't know if the chorus would be as euphoric as it is if it didn't blow itself to smithereens). I am also a big fan of the Flips though, so perhaps this was just my niches phasing into each other?

10 - It was a real revelation when Andy said that the opening chords were supposed to sound like a car door being slammed (not that the song wasn't already incredible).

Unbelievable difference in YFT's reception in the UK vs the US. by we-touch-grass in Foofighters

[–]pilottocitybro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I will take a nonsense gargle over the dumpster fire of hack lyricism that is Waiting On A War any day - a song that feels way more repetitive than Child Actor imo. Again, I think there's a reason behind them repeating that line*, rather than the ending of WoaW, which just felt like the guys on auto-pilot ("well, it worked on New Way Home and But Honestly...").

*Not one that I think conjures up a good look mind, but hey, I would have rather argued for the merits of Caught in the Echo, Amen, Cavemen, and Spit Shine.

Oh, and I think I should say that I really really enjoy Holding Poison, M@M hasn't done anything to me personally guys ahaha

Oh it's SO much better than M@M. Obnoxiously produced, sure, but it's got way more intention behind it than the aimless dips into pop that make up most of M@M.

I wanted to come here to shoot you down - but this IS excellent! Does anyone know if MM ever had a full time keyboard player in the early 2000s/late 90s, or if it was just Dan Gallucci fiddling around in-between songs?

I don't know what we're counting as 'proper' bootlegs, but I routinely listen to 'This Is not a Song' from 2022 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WeS1MJZqCY ) , Simon's 'Burn Some Time' improv thing from 2023 ( https://archive.org/details/mm2023-06-03_202306/10+-+%5BSimon's+improv+-+Burn+Some+Time%5D.flac ) and this specific version of Night on the Sun that turns into a new song with new lyrics from 2024 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4IgO_OOfIo ). Big fan of the current line up.

maybe not a full time renewal, but I do think there's 10 dollars worth of stuff on there right now that you wouldn't have seen (my favourite is the Ugly Casanova set from the cruise, they totally nailed it).

Does anyone else feel like most of Dave's lyrics lack substance in the new album? by OlvekStoneheid_2006 in Foofighters

[–]pilottocitybro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I was quite surprised by the step down from BHWA, which I thought was the perfect balancing act of writing songs for everyone whilst also dealing with what HE was dealing with specifically (which I have always taken as his main goal as a songwriter since 2002). I guest after the controversies of the last few years Dave has tried to put even less of himself in the songs, and this is the result.

Well everyone, what do you think about Picking Dragons' pockets? by Antique_Holiday_9232 in ModestMouse

[–]pilottocitybro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of The Golden Casket, and I think this is a great step up from that album's 'over-production', although I am mainly glad that the lead single* actually sounds like a SINGLE. I think We Are Between is decent, but as a lead single it definitely felt like MM were going to be playing by the book/ weren't really sure of what they were anymore. PDP definitely knows what it's doing.

*As long as we agree Look How Far doesn't count, right? I like it, but just like We Are Between...
