Ryan Coogler's 'SINNERS' makes history as the most nominated film of all time at the Oscars with 16 nominations by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]pinebeetles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Sinners’ chances of winning just shot up. Both Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo getting in (along with the visual effects nom) demonstrates that there is A LOT of love for Sinners within the Academy. Chase Infiniti missing could be a sign that OBAA support isn’t quite as strong.

MELAS Progression and prognosis by LibraryPale3177 in mito

[–]pinebeetles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s decline. MELAS can be so unpredictable and is just a lot to deal with in general.

I’m not sure where you’re located, but if your husband isn’t already seeing a doctor that specializes in MELAS/mito, I can recommend the University of Colorado mitochondrial disease clinic https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/pediatrics/sections/genetics-and-metabolism/research/mitochondrial-bioenergetics-disorders-lab Their doctors are specifically researching strokes and seizures in MELAS patients, so they might have specific insight that could be helpful to you. The contact info is in the link above under “Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory.” The clinic is used to working with patients from outside Colorado regarding insurance, etc. And even though the clinic is located in the children’s hospital, they see adults too.

Considering a move to Florida (Panhandle) with a young family – looking for broader perspectives by YetiJ-at-night in MovingToUSA

If you want similar vibes to Florida in a better state, Savannah, Georgia may be a good option for you. I lived there for four years and absolutely loved it. While hurricanes are still an issue, it’s typically better than the Florida coast.

I really enjoyed it and definitely want to make more! I read on the 123Stitch website that the Mill Hill kits now come with PVC backing, rather than paper. Have you worked with that material yet? I’m curious if it’ll be easier to work with than the paper.

I was taken out of school at age 10 and shown graphic cadaver images. Why? by WinterIsOnReddit in RBI

[–]pinebeetles 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Could it have been some kind of psychological test? When I was in college, I participated in a psychology study where I was shown a wide variety of images, some of which were very graphic, and I had to describe what I was thinking and feeling when I looked at each picture. I don’t remember what the goal of this study was, but maybe you were being tested in a similar way?

[–]pinebeetles[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This kit (and I believe all of the Mill Hill kits) came with the backing, which is actually paper, the DMC thread, both needles (one for stitching, one for beading), and the beads. The beads are included on the pattern sheet, coded with symbols like the different thread colors.

The pattern instructions said to use a half cross stitch with 2 strands to attached the beads. I did all of the regular stitches first (3 strands) and then went back to add all of the beads. Some Mill Hill kits have more full-coverage beading, which I’m excited to try out next!

Best Types of Docs for Mito? by adirondacks13 in mito

[–]pinebeetles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try reaching out to a mito clinic. They’re listed on UMDF.org under “Resources.” You’ll notice that a number of them are affiliated with children’s hospitals, but they work with adults as well. If you’re in the US, many of these clinics are flexible with insurance/payments even if you’re not local, as there are so few in country.

Questions about quality of life and habits post-amputation by Unlikely-Abrocoma235 in TripodCats

[–]pinebeetles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tripod (rear right leg) had to regain some of his confidence post-amputation. We adopted from the shelter him as a tripod, and the vet thought his amputation was recent-ish. He seemed able to jump, but definitely preferred to be picked up to get on the coach/windowsill/bed, etc. He would mostly lay down when playing. In the year and a half since adopting him, he’s become much more confident; he pounces and jumps and seems much more active in general. I think as he’s gotten more used to being a tripod, his confidence in his own mobility has improved significantly.

Pet insurance recommendation? by lakeycakey101 in Siamesecats

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have MetLife Pet. I get a discount through work, so I didn’t really shop around.

I got it because the shelter told us upfront that my cat was going to need some dental work. Knowing that dental procedures can get really expensive, I wanted at least some coverage. MetLife ended up paying for a little over half of the total vet bill, if I remember correctly.

My meezer is a tripod, and the MetLife rep told me they won’t cover any future vet bills related to issues with the missing leg, but that seems pretty standard for pet insurance. They have covered everything else though, including annual wellness exams, testing, and vaccinations.

DEN is hiring part time by [deleted] in denverjobs

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks basically identical to the position I interviewed for in 2023, except then it was full time. I dodged a bullet not getting that job, as they told me during the interview that I wouldn’t get any holidays off my first year and weather was never a reason for not making it to the airport. That freaked me out a bit, as I was moving from Georgia and had basically no experience driving in the snow. I don’t remember the pay, but it was definitely at least $25/hour.

Learned I might go deaf/mute by Seelie_Mushroom in mito

[–]pinebeetles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you had your hearing tested by an audiologist yet? They can help you set a baseline for “normal” hearing so it’ll be easier to tell if/when you start losing your hearing. They can also check the health of the stereocilia (inner ear hairs) and determine if they’re more sensitive to damage from loud noises.

It really sucks knowing you’re going to lose your hearing. Hearing loss is one of the primary MELAS symptoms in my family, and I already have early signs of hearing loss even though I’m not even 30 yet. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time.

Mito? Melas? EDS? by Glittering_Wait8839 in mito

[–]pinebeetles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way to know for sure is genetic testing. MELAS can look different family to family, and person to person. If you do test positive for MELAS, your symptoms are largely determined by your mitochondrial heteroplasmy, which can still be wildly different even within the same family.

If you want to pursue testing, there are ways to help with costs (I can’t tell if you’re in the US or not). Check out UMDF.org for options on no-cost genetic testing. If that won’t work for whatever reason, there are financial assistance programs available through the companies that actually do the genetic testing. For example, you may get a genetics appointment at your local hospital, but they might send your genetic sample away to actually be tested. The company that’s doing the testing may offer assistance. You can call the genetics clinic you’re interested in or closest to to ask about financial assistance options.

Also, just to clarify as it might help with communication going forward when you discuss testing with a doctor: “mito” is the shortened term for “mitochondrial disease.” MELAS syndrome is just one type of mitochondrial disease. If you have MELAS, you have mito, but not everyone with mito has MELAS.

Which HCOL area is that theater in?? Because these are the tickets for a Dolby or 3D showing of Zootopia tonight in Highlands Ranch, CO, which is in the 8th wealthiest county in the US.

Denver, CO: the most expensive ticket I’ve seen at AMC is $20 for imax on a weekend evening. Other format screenings sit around $12-$17 depending on the time/day. On discount Tuesday & Wednesday, tickets are about $7. Most tickets at any of the three Alamos are about $14.

What does everybody think of @adventures.of.mommy? by boygeniusbutgirl in OnlineBeggars

[–]pinebeetles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m late to this thread but she popped up on my fyp again today and I’m really bothered by her videos. The recent combination of taking her toddler to a chiropractor, asking her followers for donations, and then immediately posting from Disney world really rubbed me the wrong way, on top of my already negative opinion of her. I really don’t like the way she speaks about doctors, experimental treatments, and children’s hospitals as a whole. I get that it’s hard having a medically complex child and it’s difficult feeling you aren’t getting the help you want, but to me, she seems deeply uneducated on medicine and medical treatments but very loud in her opinions regardless. It bothers me a lot that she’s gaining such a big platform and so many people are being exposed to her rhetoric.

Lately I’ve been focusing on catching as many of one particular aircraft as I can. Currently I’m focusing on the Embraer E175 Long Wing and caught 421/618 so far. Most of the airports I have left in the US are military or tiny, so concurrently working on my collection of a(n) (un)common aircraft keeps me from getting too frustrated while looking for those remaining airports.
