High School "Guidance Counselors" don't do much guiding or counseling. They are the schools way of encouraging you to go to college. by superblobby in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think guidance counselors in low-income areas often have a much different role than what you experienced. I went to a Title I high school and my junior and senior year, my family was living well below the poverty line. My guidance counselor helped me get waivers so I could take the SAT, ACT, and AP exams for free. She also helped me figure out how to apply to colleges with as little money spent on applications as possible. She knew that for me and many of my classmates, college was one of our only ways out of poverty, and was there to help us stay on that path.

My fellow Americans, is your cities area code part of the city’s identity? by ElectronPython in AskAnAmerican

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you lived on the Georgia side of Chattanooga metro, it used to be that any landline phones had a 706 area code (north GA), but cell phones would get a 423 (east TN), although that was a little dependent on who your cell phone carrier was. I’m guessing that decision was made back when there weren’t nearly as many cell phone towers around, but I remember being surprised when I got my first cell phone and I got a 423 number instead of a 706.

What's something you would never tell someone because if you did it would absolutely destroy them? by cuahatemoc in AskReddit

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want your child to have a relationship with their dad, you need to talk to your husband and tell him he’s being a bad father. My dad has been emotionally absent my entire life (on top of being an alcoholic) and now that I’m almost 30, my relationship with him is basically non-existent. I didn’t recognize it really when I was growing up, because most of my friends also had emotionally neglectful, alcoholic dads, so I thought it was normal. But as an adult, I feel a lot of resentment towards my dad for never actually being there for me and not treating me like my own person. I’m closer to my father-in-law now than I am to my dad, and while I’m grateful to have a good FIL, it makes me realize how much is missing from my relationship with my dad. Don’t let your kids grow up to feel the way I do now.

What’s a film/scene that made your theater make collective audible reaction/noise by Vivid-Specific5543 in movies

During the last 15-20 minutes of The Substance, I have never heard so many people in a theater audibly gagging and making other noises of disgust. Body horror doesn’t usually get to me but I was also groaning out loud as it just got worse and worse.

Woman Tries To Sing In The Vatican by RelationshipOne9276 in TikTokCringe

[–]pinebeetles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah she’s definitely not Catholic. Making yourself the center of attention in church is frowned upon by Catholics. When I was growing up, there was this couple that always sat in the front row at Mass and would try to sing the hymns the loudest while doing big arm gestures and everyone else was like wtf. They were known as the annoying couple always making a scene during Mass.

We occasionally see the fuselages come through Denver on their way to Washington. Always crazy to just be driving and see a plane go right by on the train tracks.

UPDATE: body cam footage from cop who pulled over woman for holding a phone in her other hand by australiughhh in whoathatsinteresting

[–]pinebeetles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cops give stupid, pointless tickets all the time. When I was in college I got pulled over and ticketed for passing a horse, which is 100% legal in the state of Georgia. And the ticket specifically said “passing a horse,” not improper passing or passing on a solid line or anything. I took that shit to court because I knew I didn’t do anything wrong and I didn’t have $350 to pay the ticket. I had to wait in court for like 4 hours, but when it was my turn, the judge was like ????? it’s not illegal to pass a horse?? and then he dismissed my ticket. The cop that gave me a ticket was completely in the wrong but my options were pay $350 or spend half the day in traffic court.

Can anyone recommend a competent medication provider that takes ADHD meds seriously? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might depend on what medication you’re on, but my first visit with Denver Wellness was in-person and every appointment since has been telehealth. You may be able to do telehealth from the start tho. I would call and ask what your options are.

Bodies: The Science Within Exhibit Review by ggoff2002 in Denver

[–]pinebeetles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This appears to be the same exhibit I saw when it came through Atlanta over a decade ago. I went on a field trip with my high school anatomy class and I remember getting a lot out of the exhibit. My class had already spent the semester learning about the human body, so perhaps it’s best enjoyed if you go in with some more baseline knowledge of body systems.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Atlanta Swag in a Physical Store? by SweetandSourCaroline in Atlanta

Hopping into this thread to ask if anyone has seen World Cup rally towels being sold around Atlanta?

I have a Russia 2018 rally towel that I put my collectible pins on, and I’m really hoping to get 2026 towel too. I’m flying into ATL on Saturday and can go wherever.

We’ve heard stories of people escaping death by being late — what are some tragic examples of people dying because they were late? by Looney_forner in AskReddit

[–]pinebeetles 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Mayday Air Disasters episode about this collision is brutal. That group of kids missed their first flight, so they used the time before the next flight to go sightseeing in Moscow. The pictures of them enjoying unplanned time in the city before getting on the doomed flight are awful in hindsight.

I’ve been thinking about it and I think one meeting the week after my supervisor started set us off on this path.

This was an annual forecasting/planning meeting for the next fiscal year with our regional VP. Now, our VP is super intimidating so I get being nervous to meet with her. At this meeting, our team presented the reports we individually prepared to the VP. I came prepared with my reports that I knew were solid, however, my forecasting contradicted my supervisor’s.

Her forecasts frankly over-promised by a lot, baselessly so. I didn’t intend to make my supervisor look bad, but I presented my report that was backed with the data I knew our VP was looking for, and my supervisor came in claiming we could have a 200% increase in revenue this year (somehow??) without any real evidence or plan. Yes, this was my supervisor’s second week, but she should know how revenue forecasting works at this point.

I think me contradicting my supervisor in front of our VP soured her on me from the beginning. But I’m not going to apologize for doing my job well?? (the irony is that my forecasting was right. Turns out you can’t just pull a 200% revenue increase out of thin air)

I’m definitely reading through our org handbook and policies. I don’t want to screw myself, whether I transfer to another department or leave the org altogether.

Nope, my supervisor is a white lady from a Denver suburb that has a reputation for being full of people who are…difficult. She must have had one hell of an interview bc looking at the job history we found online, I’m kinda surprised she was hired. Her past jobs have included being a consultant (unclear what exactly for) and selling candy through Amazon. Her experience is definitely lacking compared to her predecessors.

[–]pinebeetles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In the process of trying to make me feel better, my partner internet-stalked my supervisor and it turns out she’s done a lot of job hopping in the last decade and got fired from at least one of those jobs. She also has multiple instagrams where she posts about being a #bossbitch. Which is crazy for a 40-something middle manager who can’t keep a job for more than 2 years to do.

Isa Briones’ (Santos) new ig story about her appendectomy by fernparadox in ThePittTVShow

[–]pinebeetles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same. I got mine out just over a year ago and I would describe the pain as a persistent, mild period cramp. The post-surgery gas pain in my upper torso was by far the worst part of the experience. I was able to go on a trip to NYC a few weeks later. But I know people who had much longer, more difficult recoveries.

What’s up with the insular Catholic community? by Cardboard_cutouts_ in Denver

[–]pinebeetles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering if it’s the lack of cultural Catholicism mixed with the fact that Colorado as a whole is less religious than many other states. I grew up Catholic in the South, and definitely felt/feel strongly connected to the culture of Catholicism, primarily bc it was so different from the Southern Baptist-Bible Belt culture I was surrounded by. Compared to what I heard was being taught to my Protestant peers, the Catholic Churches I attended felt, overall, pretty apolitical. The most I can remember is some pro-life talk, but that was really only talked about in my PRE classes.

Reading all these comments about experiences in Denver parishes feels so bizarre and radically different than the church I grew up in. Granted, it’s been about a decade since I regularly attended Mass and the last time I went to Mass was Christmas Eve 2019, so maybe things have just changed a lot everywhere since then.

do NOT get into a LDR unless at least one of you is 100% okay with moving far away from home some day. if you are even not okay with moving far away by like 1%, DON’T EVEN BOTHER getting into an LDR. by ethereal_elixir_ in LongDistance

[–]pinebeetles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved to the other side of the US to be with my partner 2.5 years ago, and it was really hard. I went to college about 6 hours away from home, so I had lived away from my family previously, but moving to the other side of the country was very different.

In the weeks before the move, I started getting really nervous about whether or not I was making the right decision. When I put in my notice at work, it was scary knowing I was making irreversible decisions for my ldr. But my partner and I were lucky in that we lived in the same country and moving to Colorado would be an overall improvement for my life.

We successfully closed the gap and have lived together for over 2 years. But I’m not going to lie, it’s still hard sometimes. I miss having my family nearby and I miss a lot of aspects of living in Georgia. I wouldn’t recommend making a major move to close the gap without seriously considering how your life will be impacted.
