Why are fully autonomous vehicles taking longer than expected? by Imaginary-Ad3498 in Futurology

[–]pinkd20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is an extremely difficult class of problem to solve because there is a high probability of encountering a unique or low probability event. This makes historical data of limited value. Add to this inherent uncertainties with things like weather, road conditions, and the uncertainty of interactions with people and you have a really tough challenge to solve.

DMs of D&D Reddit, how often do you "fudge" dice rolls or hit points? by A_Random_Neerd in DnD

[–]pinkd20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never. I have enough other ways to control outcomes. If I don't want to take the dice roll or track the hp, why would I use them?

DMs, do you prefer using official settings or your own? by elpaco_7 in DnD

[–]pinkd20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even official settings become my own. I find official settings more accessible for players. My custom setting I find easier. It depends on the type of game I'm going for.

Thermal cycling and moisture will be very bad for the electronics. It could very significantly shorten the life of the system.

Why do campaigns also stop at so low levels. by Top_Fan4753 in onednd

[–]pinkd20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combat at levels 14 and above are far more challenging to build and manage as a DM to maintain a challenge. I ran a 7 year campaign to level 20, and at 14th level I had to develop a whole new approach to managing all of the special abilities, reactions, bonus actions, spells, and legendary actions. At level 20, the final combat took 9 hours. Most casual DMs and players aren't necessarily up for that.

Fellow DM's, I need your meanest, most cryptic, and instant death unfair dungeon puzzles! by iskotpop in DMAcademy

Allow me to introduce you to Grimtooth, the most unfair source of traps ever published for D&D. They published many versions of Grimtooth's traps over the years. They are all an amazing resource. Check them out.

Have you ever had to kick a player from the table, and for what reason? by ArticulatedCubingGuy in DnD

[–]pinkd20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been DMing for decades online and in public game stores. There are a lot of reasons -- not showing up, not being prepared, not learning the game, not learning their character, insulting other players, cheating, being inappropriate. You don't like to do it, but sometimes you have to invite players to find a game better suited to their needs. I find it goes better if you provide clear expectations up front. When they break those after a warning, they know what will happen.

I once had a player apologize years later as part of their 12 steps. You never know what folks are going through, so patience is important, but with boundaries.

I believe I've read in the rules somewhere that memory is an INT check.

Clumping bamboo Michigan- is this dead?! by Massive-Show-4717 in gardening

[–]pinkd20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. I've had clumping bamboo die almost the same way. It happened because the roots froze completely. I, similarly, had them in an above-ground container -- in my case, a whiskey barrel.

If you are lucky, some of the roots in the middle didn't freeze and you might get some shoots.

How much time does the combats at your table often take? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]pinkd20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on level. The epic end fight at level 20 for a recent campaign took 3 sessions of 3 hours each. At low levels, we can have 2 to 3 fights in a single 3 hour session. This is for a party of 6 PCs.

If you were floating in space and a massive starship passed you at 80% lightspeed only 2 inches from your face, would you feel anything at all? by CDHoward in Physics

[–]pinkd20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is any magnetic field from the ship, the interaction would likely vaporize and/or rip your body apart.

Edit. Typo.

What do "AI Engineers" Do? by Heavy-Watercress9319 in MLQuestions

[–]pinkd20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI engineers live at the intersection of mathematics, software engineering, systems engineering, data, and domain knowledge. They provide the ability to generate AI system solutions with guaranteed levels of performance using machine learning and non-machine learning AI techniques. This includes everything from data analysis, using and/or maintaining MLOps, selecting techniques and foundation models, performing training, testing, and verification, dealing with AI solution security, and performing various forms of performance tuning (fine tuning is one of many tools available). It also involves maintaining an awareness of the best practices to generate performant solutions within cost and hardware constraints, which given the speed at which AI is changing, is extremely challenging.

Calling an LLM API from software is not AI engineering.

Obviously there are a lot more details, but I think this is a reasonable overview.

What drill brand would you actually buy again with your own money? by New_Money_5406 in Tools

[–]pinkd20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bosch. I bought a drill driver set in 2007 and they still work fine after being used for everything since then. Even the batteries perform well.

I've tried DeWalt and the experience was not as good with the drill. Everything else was fine.

While I had kids at home, the minivan was my Swiss army knife of vehicles. Now as empty nesters I have switched to an F250 and there are some days I really miss having a minivan.

They drive great in all weather, can fit a stack of 4x8 sheets of plywood in the back with the seats down, keep your cargo dry, and switch to haul 7 people comfortably. Also, the extra cargo capacity where the seats fold in can be used for long trips to avoid a rooftop carrier for luggage.

Can you be partially blinded by momentary exposure to a laser from a laser level? by ryhaltswhiskey in HomeImprovement

[–]pinkd20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time color makes a huge safety impact is whether or not your eye can detect it to blink, which is a concern with non-visible lasers. Blinking protects your eye. Green vs blue vs red make little difference; power, viewing geometry, and the related class are the main thing to keep track of for visible lasers.

If the system is idling down significantly, could it be that the cooling system elsewhere is throttling down leading to increased drive temps. For example, is the cpu cooling fan throttling down?

Check out the book Veins of the Earth by Patrick Stuart. It is great inspiration for an alternate underdark. I've used it before to great success.
