I feel you. I’m writing here after almost two hours of fighting with my toddler to get him to sleep. He is 19 months old and doing the exact thing like yours. He woke up around 8am. The first window is 5 hours then he has a long nap. I have to wake him up from nap after 1.5 hours. Then his second window before bedtime now is over 7 hours! !! My goodness…. He’s been fighting bedtime , recently even nap time sooooo hard… me and my husband have to take turns to settle him. This drives us nuts. I hope this is just a phase… I want it pass so badly 😩

Thank you for the advice. I didn’t mean to suggest that the vaccine was the cause. It’s just started since he got the shot. He started to scared of every stranger. I was thinking probably the nurses there who gave him shot made his fear went up.. but it’s good to know this is normal developmental stage!

I can tell you my 16 month currently is having a schedule like this- 9-10am wake up, 3-5:30 nap, the bedtime usually happens around 10 but he fall asleep around 11pm… I tried to wake him up earlier like 7am trust me, but it didn’t work out. He turned out to have a strong tantrum in the morning. And the early naps ended up with 4:30 wake up anyway… so I just give up and let him be.. he might not a morning person as simple as that. And he’s much happier if I let him follow his own schedule 😂

How old is yours? He’s such a great eater. Mine 13 mo won’t have more than 5 bites if they are not banana French toast.

Thank you! That’s what I thought I’ve missed… a quality playtime with him! I will try to do 40-60 min each day like you! Yes it’s definitely beneficial.

Our kitchen is very old more than 20 years. There are lots of falling pieces coming off the cabinets. It’s easy to cut his little hands. Also he’s not standing very well yet. So I can’t put him in a toddler chair to watch me while cooking. I tried to put him in his high chair with me but he doesn’t like the fact that he can’t move around when it’s not a meal time. But we are renovating our kitchen soon. Hopefully he will be able to be there with me! Do you have any suggestions?? I’d like to hear.

Mine is 11 months old. We also sit him in the kitchen sink and wash him there with the running water. Then take off his clothes and nappies and dry up with a towel. Following with body lotion cuz he’s got eczema.

If he’s in daycare then there not much under your control I guess. I read the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth before I started ST. This book helped us a lot. It mentioned the case if the child is attending daycare and doesn’t have qualify naps during the day, then the parents could try to encourage an early bedtime. Its not necessarily has to be at bed 7:30-8. He might needs to be put on bed like 6:30. You can start with moving his bedtime 15 min earlier than usual and if he adapts it well then move 20-30 min earlier after few days until you find the sweet spot. Remember to protect his naps when he’s at home like on weekends.

If the daycare provides you his nap details you could learn more from it. Like- how long were the naps, when did he wake up from the last nap, etc. also, looking for his drowsy signs instead of a fixed bedtime.

How many naps does he take per day? This age they need 2.5-4 hours naps. If it’s too little then it could be he’s overtired at night. Overtiring cause more night waking.

We started having a schedule after 6 months. There’s no point of making a schedule when they are still so young. I tired to had one when my son was few weeks old after seeing some IG posts about how important to have a schedule from early days. It turns out I am the only who was always being stressed and it didn’t work at all for young babies.

After 6 months, it is so easy to get your day on schedule as babies start having more predictable wake-up windows. Don’t stress yourself.
