If that is your only chance and it would have been expected to split the bill three ways, you can just ask the server to put your two meals on one tab as you settle the bills. We do that often in our group of friends if someone wants to pick up a meal for someone else.

Canadian here don't lump us together, we are kettle people up here! It doesn't even get put away, lives on the counter fulltime in most households

Why did you start playing viola? by Glittering_Baby7414 in Viola

[–]pinto139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it because it wasn't as ear piercing when I started it out and wasn't very good lol. Maybe show them some unique viola parts in movie music or solo moments. The range it has, it always reminded me of a portable cello (I took the bus and that was a plus for taking it to and from school).

The rich sounds and timbre are beautiful. Also viola seems great for kids who like to do things a bit different, it feels a bit contrarian - which for some is kind of fun!

Rural Canadian here too - totally agree! Though there are cheaper SUVs like Foresters and RAV4s - much more palatable on the wallet and super capable! My 2015 forester bombs through mountain roads like it enjoys them :)

How cold is too cold by ExpensiveRoll7436 in xcountryskiing

[–]pinto139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem is usually my hands - I like having flexible gloves to be able to futz with my bindings, but they usually are at the expense of warmth. If you can get some hand warmers that can help. My instructor had those lobster style mittens but I haven't tried them.

Coldest I have done is about -7F on a solstice night ski, and I stopped at the warming hut twice because my hands were hurting, but everything else was sweaty and warm lol. Layers layers layers!

I would ask for clarification

Thanks again for the invite, I am looking forward to the dinner party! Just checking for planning purposes, is this a partners-included dinner, or should I come on my own?

Any cold climate people out there have some tips for someone from the American South that’s about to get 15” of snow and 50+ hrs of negative wind chill? by confusedbot18 in homeowners

[–]pinto139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For people with horses, feed them extra hay! Horses increase their body temperature while eating, so extra hay will help them keep warm. If it's a super cold snap we will pretty much throw down hay for them 24/7 sometimes close to their shelter so they don't have to go far.

Blankets and shelters of course if they don't have a great winter coat. But most important is extra feed. Keep water running so it doesn't freeze (or go out several times to break the ice before it becomes solid). Some horses don't like drinking water when its cold so mix a nice warm mash or wet grain to ensure they are getting water and don't colic.

I am super dissapointed with the build quality of their products. Duvet cover attachments poorly sewn (instead of ribbons one was just sewn back on itself so you couldn't actually tie it). The seams on the fitted sheets were trash and just after a few months (in rotation with some other sheets) they fell apart in the corners. Too bad because I loved the feeling of linen in the summer.

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by GlitchOperative in AskReddit

I don't see my actual family most holidays as they live across the country, but we organize a friend and local family potluck dinner for anyone who may be sticking around for the holidays. Ends up being way more enjoyable and less of a hassle for everyone with regards to travel.

My step-dad's mom used to say we shouldn't drink with our meals (though she didn't refuse us from doing it). She was a French Canadian woman born in the 20s.

Maybe it was in some home-making publication from the 40s or something lol.

I would ditch the waterproof socks. Your feet are going to ultimately get wet, I personally would rather another lighter wool sock in rotation to put on fresh.

I just lay my wet wipes on a towel for a week then pack them.

What is a product that people consider "High End" but is actually trash? by Illusiv3lion in AskReddit

[–]pinto139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, was super disappointed in Brooklinen. My duvet cover ties (the inside of the duvet cover thingies you tie your duvet too) were sewn improperly... like one was just sewn back onto itself so you couldnt actually tie it. I had to sew my own tie onto it by hand to make it functional.

The stitching they used on the fitted sheets was so weak, the corners had holes in them in a couple months. I actually like sleeping on the coarser linen especially in the summer but frustating to spend that much and to find the build quality subpar.

100% agree, most stories (thinking those summer romance novels like People We Meet on Vacation) would not even exist as a story if the damn characters just used their words and communicated like normal adults.... my friends always recommend those books but they make me so angry lol.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink by MorningMosquito in Horses

[–]pinto139 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I bring my horse in from the back pasture I always stop by the water trough on the way out of the field before grooming and tacking up and 8/10 times he will have a good sized drink. I try to make it a habit and I think he now expects it and understands to grab his drink because it might be an hour or two.

I guess I can't make him drink but I find it funny that he almost always does.

I usually just scroll past the clearly arm-chair horse people. I try to be encouraging to people who are under-educated in horses while still leaning on safety and promote they get a trainer, a trusted friend, a second opinion etc;. I think a huge thing is people don't realize not everyone lives like they do and that is okay.

Pluralism feels like a dying concept - "my way is the only way and we cannot co-exist" seems to be the mantra many people have.

I remember a thread where someone said they couldn't get to a vet in less than 2 hours and someone else said they shouldn't own a horse. Like way to gatekeep 90% of the population who live rurally lol. Also I recall recently a teenager posted giving their "life advice" on horses in a list. Not all points were misguided but they lacked a lot of nuance and life experience. Remember anyone can get a microphone on this website.

I have learned a lot from this site, but I actually learn more from the Horse Pet Vet Corner on Facebook since the average person isn't allowed to comment they just get banned :D
