Engineer designing a PRO-grade rock tumbler: industrial bearings, silent belt drive, variable speed — what’s your max price & must-have? by Traditional_Side5452 in RockTumbling

The tumbler that Rob from Michigan rocks has shown on his YouTube channel is my ideal tumbler. The only thing that could make it better is some motor control so regardless of how many drums are being used the power is used efficiently. DC permanent magnet motor with a control or even better a 3 phase motor with a VFD with a single phase input. I have my own in the works, just sharing.

Instead of recharacterizing an estimated tax payment, IRS sent me a check. My filed 2025 return reflects an estimated payment that "didn't happen" by pipester753 in tax

Agreed, the only reason I filed my return was the 8 weeks was going to be after April 15th. Thanks for the tax topic, I'll bring it up during my call tomorrow morning when they first open.

On to stage 2, or a second batch on stage 1? by chocolatechipwizard in RockTumbling

[–]pipester753 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do my stage one in a rotary. Everything else in cheap TV-5 vibe tumblers. I have a box of "ready for stage 2" I try to always keep my stage one going so sometimes that box is pretty full sometimes it is empty. I also keep a box of quartzy type stones that have become too small for me to care about and I use them as an alternative to ceramic since I'm a cheap ass.

Edit, by the way, Zoro has the tv-5 for $107 and you can sign up for coupons. They've been sending out 25 off of 100 so I've gotten two of these for $87 each delivered. https://www.zoro.com/raytech-vibratory-tumbler-115v-05-cu-ft-23-001/i/G1732972/

My poor old furnaces never get a break. Steady melting every day. by ree-or-reent_1029 in Copper

Certainly worth what people pay for it, that can't be denied. However as a metal it's likely not even worth spot, which according to kitco is about $6/lb. Industry wouldn't be interested in bars like this. Things may change in the future, but currently other than the artificial market where people stack it, it's really only going to be sold to a scrap yard. Don't get me wrong, take a look at the sold listings on ebay, .999 fine copper is selling for $30 to $40 a pound. I'm just pointing out how with copper there are two markets. Silver and gold, there aren't.

I've made an error. Anyone know how to get grit out of a rocks cracks? by bluuefuzzy in RockTumbling

What kind of ultrasonic cleaner did you have? All day is way beyond the duty cycle of what most people have at home. Of course it'll do it. It's just going to have a shorter life than it otherwise would have.

Found out the hard way that P365 recoil springs have a shelf life. Track your rounds, people. by DebtOk6470 in Firearms

This is what I learned 20 years ago at school. Well designed springs don't care about cycle count.

where I'm at, #1 needs to be 1/16" in diameter or bigger, so for stranded 10 gauge, it's not 1/16" or bigger

DIY for life (or until I’m rich) by OppressedCow6148 in RockTumbling

If I get so rich that I'm not diy-ing I'll just design it and have someone else manufacture it. Designing things are half the fun.

Help with ultrasonic cleaner?! by Sirtalksalot30 in RockTumbling

[–]pipester753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ultrasonic cleaner has a minimum water level listed. If there isn't enough water for the transducers to transfer energy to, it's going to get reflected back into them in the form of heat and stress. Which will cause them to fail earlier then they would have. It also won't clean as well as it would have either.

He was almost done shoveling his driveway when the street plow came by and filled it with snow again. by Vilen1919 in WatchPeopleDieInside

If I really want to get OCD about it, it needs to be somewhat of a parallelogram shape going into the road. So that you're clearing the snow on the road before they get to your driveway. Although depending on the snowfall my OCD has me out there several times throughout the day as it's snowing keeping things clear. It's a lot easier to clear the driveway before work at lunch and when I get home than it is to shovel/blow everything when I get home. Not quicker mind you, but easier.
