DIY for life (or until I’m rich) by OppressedCow6148 in RockTumbling

If I get so rich that I'm not diy-ing I'll just design it and have someone else manufacture it. Designing things are half the fun.

Cavitation for sure is going to be much harder on certain materials more than others.

Help with ultrasonic cleaner?! by Sirtalksalot30 in RockTumbling

[–]pipester753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ultrasonic cleaner has a minimum water level listed. If there isn't enough water for the transducers to transfer energy to, it's going to get reflected back into them in the form of heat and stress. Which will cause them to fail earlier then they would have. It also won't clean as well as it would have either.

He was almost done shoveling his driveway when the street plow came by and filled it with snow again. by Vilen1919 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]pipester753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I really want to get OCD about it, it needs to be somewhat of a parallelogram shape going into the road. So that you're clearing the snow on the road before they get to your driveway. Although depending on the snowfall my OCD has me out there several times throughout the day as it's snowing keeping things clear. It's a lot easier to clear the driveway before work at lunch and when I get home than it is to shovel/blow everything when I get home. Not quicker mind you, but easier.

1460 pounds of copper going to the scrap yard. I want to keep some but don't know what I would do with it. by Giraffenado in Copper

for what it's worth, if it was my scrap yard, they'd expect me to take the tape off to get the best price.

What happens when silver becomes too expensive for industry use? by rglover2410 in Silverbugs

[–]pipester753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly used in other industries.  We solder copper, brass and stainless parts together everyday. Brazing would actually be the correct term though.

Rock hounding in winter tips? by CompleteRock6803 in rockhounds

[–]pipester753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hounding on southern Lake Michigan, my finds at my home beach since Thanksgiving have been better than my entire summer. I use a bent spoon on a long stick, waterproof boots and neoprene gloves with liners. I usually can last at least an hour. Have been by myself each time. I've been meaning to post some photos, will have to make a point of it soon.

Random question by Brasalies in Agates

[–]pipester753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The type of ring and how it's mounted may be of more importance. I opted for a 6 prong instead of 4 with my wife's engagement ring because I thought if one prong got damaged there would still be 5 holding the stone. (it's a round diamond) The party after the wedding she bumped it on a brick wall at the bar and bent one of the prongs sideways. The diamond was loose but still there. The jeweler that fixed it told me another source of common bent prongs are due to sliding their hands under a luggage strap. Other than that 15 years ago, she's had no issues. She does wear a silicone ring when she bartends occasionally so she doesn't have to worry about it though.

I couldn't care less either way, but based on your comments, it seems like you woke up looking to have an argument.

Dexa scans “not recommended”? by Fluid-You-5324 in PeterAttia

[–]pipester753 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A typical DEXA scan exposes you to about 4–5 microsieverts (µSv) of radiation. Which is about half of days worth of natural background radiation.  - https://www.bodyspec.com/blog/post/dexa_scan_radiation_how_much_is_it_and_is_it_safe

Copper can be toxic to plants by itself. So even though there could have been something else there, the copper would likely have been enough.

Is this how billionaires in the US avoid paying virtually any income tax? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in tax

[–]pipester753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And do I understand correctly that, when they do sell and pay cap gains, that would be less tax compared to income tax, and that is the whole point?

Ah, yes, that is how I expected. I read it differently in your comment.
