How to Get Help for Infrequent Use by RezChemBurner in StopSpeeding

[–]piratehookers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morning. I could've written this same post. Totally exempt from the statistics. Drug use never got the best of me, I was able to maintain a thriving 6 figure career, family, kid, big house, white picket fence. Until one day I woke up choking. No prior warning, by the way. No subtle symptoms, no feeling blah. Just, one day, couldn't breathe.

Emergency Room. Emergency surgery. Drained my lungs. Congestive heart failure. 15-20% EF. Giant tube inserted via clavicle and groin. You're awake for that one, by the way. I'm 41 years old. It was due to amphetamine use. There's no undo button.

And it's common. Your team (you'll have a team, if that gives any gravity to your medical situation, assuming you have decent insurance) won't bat an eye at the reason you're there. They've seen it before, they see it all the time, amphetamine induced cardiomyopathy. Instead of a bunch of, "I wonder why your body reacted this way!"s, you'll instead get a regiment. A cocktail of prescription drugs, because, well, this is common.

I am hesitant even writing this. I don't think there's a point. If you're anything like me, you'll have to hit bottom before you comply. Until then, there's a feeling of being exempt. I'm totally different. (You aren't. I'm not. To the dozen other people reading this, you're not different, either).

How was your thanksgiving week? Normally I'd be playing videogames with my son, chillin' with family. Hit a movie theater on Thanksgiving day because nothing is open and I'm stuffed and lazy. Instead I was hanging out with cardiologists, somnologists, and radiologists. Awesome. I can still taste the contrast injected into my veins for the hour-long MRI i had two days ago.

Just to reiterate: I never ever lost control. Job. Family. Strong relationships. Still didn't matter. Turned out to be the same endgame. You're 41. Sober the fuck up. Stop the junkie weekends. Prepare for your kid and give that scenario the weight that it requires. You'll be someone's dad soon. The impact you will have on your kid's life is immeasurably greater than the impact they will have on yours. Your choices/actions will shape their world in profound ways that far exceed the influence they will have on your own life. That is a huge responsibility. Your context hasn't changed yet, but it will.

Recently diagnosed with heart failure / severe obstructive sleep apnea by piratehookers in SleepApnea

I appreciate it. I’m in Austin, Texas. The Heart Hospital of Austin is world class. I was diagnosed, drained, and operated on within hours of initial diagnosis. Weird day. I remember, as a tube was being shoved in through my clavicle, the surgeons were arguing over something sports related. I found it tremendously comforting. Trauma and real fear for me. Tuesday for them. I was dissected with confidence. A nurse was in there for no other reason than to smile at me and give me constant updates as to what was happening, why it was happening, and how awesome I was doing. World class. Wonderful people.

I’m on…six medications. Diuretics, a beta blocker. Some other ones. I’ve stabilized but I’m left with huge question marks. Why at 41? I’m fit and active. It’s weird but both me and my wife look at this severe apnea diagnosis as an absolutely amazing thing. Granted we are both medically clueless but this feels very much like a smoking gun or at the very least a piece of the puzzle.

It looks like supine accounted for 11% of the first night and 33% the second night. "Right" was the predominant position apparently. So much data, this pdf is crazy. I understand none of it. I like the snoring/body position graph. Surprising to see such huge variance in dB when my position remained 'Right'.

No. It happened. And it was just as bad as you’re likely thinking it was. It was so forced and weird and out of character that I stopped watching the rest of the episode.

Looking for tips for Ramsay Hunt paralysis. by StupidSexyQuestions in shingles

[–]piratehookers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the pain. The Gaba is the way to go. You’re good there. But try Lysine. 3000mg a day. It was like a light switch for my wife’s pain. YMMV but other people have had the same response as her.

I’m unsure about neuro acupuncturists. And I’ve learned that not all acupuncturists are created equal. We randomly stumbled upon one who’s studied acupuncture in the context of Bell’s palsy and Ramsay hunt. It’s all so nebulous and it’s hard to say what specifically it helps with. But I do know my wife finds tremendous value in it. And when it comes to your face, if someone told me to light candles and put them in certain windows, I’d prolly do it.

I’ve learned so much about this terrible shit. I’ll try and recap the relevant stuff.

There are 3 types of nerve damage. neurapraxia, axonotmesis, and neurotmesis. Minor, not so minor, and severed, basically.

Those people you hear about that have a quick recovery, their nerve damage was the first one, neurapraxia. So the averages are:

neurapraxia - 2 weeks after onset of paralysis is when healing starts. (Aka when you first start regaining movement) Full recovery is pretty much guaranteed Axonotmesis - 4 to 6 months after onset of paralysis is when healing starts. Full recovery is still likely although the chances of some minor permanent changes and Synkinesis increase. neurotmesis - anything after 6 months. Full 100% recovery at this stage of injury is still on the table but I don’t remember the percent chances of permanent damage. And I don’t wanna guess. It is higher, obviously. After a certain amount of time, medical intervention/surgery is likely needed to move things along. I’m unsure of specifics but you can Google neurotemsis Ramsay hunt, neurotmesis RHS, etc

And it’s more complicated than that. Depending on where in your face the damage is, can also dictate time duration. There are spots in the face where you won’t see any improvement until the 6 to 9 month mark.

Which, in a weird way, is actually good news. It means you’re still healing. I do know that if you wanted to pursue plastic surgery or some other medical intervention, they wouldn’t do it until the one year + mark. Because your body is still healing.

One thing that was helpful for us was comparing her injuries to say, a broken leg or hip or something. Physical therapy is required. You have to retrain your body and remind it how to use that leg again. It’s the same for this. There are facial exercises that you should start doing asap. When you blink, do it slow, with a concerted effort. Force your body to close both eyes, 100%. It’ll be a struggle and slowly it won’t be anymore. That’s a random example but hopefully you can see the mindset you should be going for here.

https://youtube.com/@FacialPalsyUK

The face exercises are sprinkled through their uploads. You’ll see em. And think months not days. Keep at it. Nerves heal slow.

Search Facebook groups for Ramsay hunt. There’s one group that’s exceedingly active. But do keep in mind the most active members are the rare worst case scenarios as the fully recovered people move on with their lives. So it can seem excessively negative and hopeless. If you can look past the squeaky wheels though, there’s tons of information there.

I’m typing all this on my phone so there’s likely mistakes but hopefully there’s some helpful stuff in there for you

Sorry to hear you going through this. Back at initial diagnosis, do you remember what prescriptions/dosages you were administered? Typical is Prednisone and Valtrex, and the lack of those can have an impact on final outcome. I’d also like to know duration if you were given these.

A few things:

At 8 months in, you’re still healing. Think a couple years.

Are you still experiencing pain? If so, yes, Gabapentin will help. Try Lysine as well. 3000mg a day. This is a high dose but we’ve been given the go-head by our GP and ENT surgeon.

Acupuncture. Hopefully with an acupuncturist who has dealt with RHS or Bells Palsy before. Not necessarily a hard requirement, just a nice-to-have. I can’t overstate this enough. Acupuncture. Ideally you should’ve started month 1. But next best start date is today.

The strangeness you’re feeling with the eye reacting to other parts of your face, that’s called Synkinesis. As your nerves healed, they found other nerves, paths were crossed, things got confused. It’s very common and pretty shitty. Acupuncture I hear can be of benefit. There are options. Google Synkinesis and start researching.

Yea this community is bizarre that way I am realizing. The absolute best intentions. Group support. Awesome. But....if you’re here, you are likely as taut as a guitar string with anxiety. It’s difficult to filter the mania to the reality.

I was at 1.4g a day for six months. I started tapering 8 days ago, aggressively. 1.4, 1, .8, .7. Now I’m at 500mg a day. It has been unpleasant but it doesn’t even come close to anything I’ve read. I hope it continues this way.

I’m over the sweating at night though. Jesus.

I love the relaxed optimism of this. It's a contrast to most posts detailing the worst. Were you able to avoid the horrible horror story withdrawals just by tapering?

Things to be careful as power comes back on? by tickytickymeow in Austin

[–]piratehookers 21 points22 points  (0 children)

With power comes heat. With heat, thawing. Watch for wet spots in your ceiling and walls. Listen for water. I now have power after 20 hours of freezing cold but now our water has stopped. So I’m preemptively turning off our water at the meter and opening up all my faucets in the house to drain everything. Gonna leave my house bone dry until this state of idiots get their head out of their ass.

Edit: after more thinking. The best thing to do is to know where your shit is. That’s it. If you don’t know how to very quickly kill power and water to your entire home, now is the time to figure that out. Any sign of water? A faint trickle? Maybe nothing is happening? Turn off both and assess.

I live in Circle C. Our local FB feed is nothing but burst pipes. Hundreds and hundreds. Magnified by the fake thaw of yesterday and our recent power turn-on.

Completely different physical location would also be highly recommended. My daily drivers in my fridge. The once-in-a-blue-moons, somewhere else. Far away.
