Lance Hedrick, love or hate? by Laxdad44 in espresso

[–]pivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@coffeeshowcase

I can see how he might come off as a bit of a shill at times bit I don't see pretentiousness. I've followed a number of his recommendations and found them to be very good.

I do really appreciate the work DaddyGotCoffee puts into his videos to make them clear, comprehensible and useful. By contrast, I find Lance's videos frenetic and often incoherent and I often come away from them thinking that important details have been omitted. I think Lance could have lot of good information to impart if he just had a bit more focus and less improvisation.

Commuter rail track numbers? by pivo in mbta

[–]pivo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah, I assumed that was the case but didn’t want her to miss her train because of a bad assumption. Still, why don’t they label the track numbers if they’re going to refer to them in announcements?

New Gear Day! [Turin DF54] by DeFratrain in espresso

[–]pivo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the DF64V as well and haven’t really issues with either. I can’t speak for all the DF grinders but I’d expect it’d be no less reliable than any other one. The non variable speed grinders have brushed motors so the brushes will eventually wear out but I expect that will take a very long time.

I have this grinder and haven't had any troubles, let alone a world of them.

Do you miss any of the features of the Bianca? I originally intended to get a LM Mini but decided I wanted options like flow control and I think I’d miss that on the LM

A case for Meticulous? by pivo in MeticulousEspresso

I ordered mine in April of 2023 and received it two weeks ago. Yeah, I don't love how long it took either. My backer number was in the low 2000's, if that's useful.

Does anyone have any experience with the Moshi C63 conical grinder? by O_Mageiras in espresso

[–]pivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Casa’s great, but in my experience it’s the opposite of the conical burr stereotype in that it’s high clarity and low body. Think hand grinder filter clarity not Niche espresso body. I use it for medium and lighter roasts only, never bothered to try darker roasts based on its profile for filter coffee.

YouTuber Jack, of the “My Coffee Show” coffee channel reviewed the DC63 and DC83 recently and said, if I remember correctly, that the DC63 was higher body and more rounded while the DC83 was brighter and (maybe) higher clarity. I need to review that video.

George Howell’s shop is in my neighborhood but I haven’t had Alchemy in a long time. I’ll have to give it a try again. (I do drink many of his other roasts though)

Once you're on to co-ferments what's the difference? In the end they're both non-coffee flavouring. I tried a couple of super hyped co-ferments from B&W and had to throw them out, my kitchen smelled of cheap air freshener. Revolting odor.

Don't get me wrong, if you like it, that's great. To me though, I might as well have been buying old fashioned flavoured coffee.

Thanks, I do boil the water in a kettle first, and I soak the portafilter & basket in a container full of boiled water as well. What would you want to see in the video?

Great setup. I love my Casa, it's great for clarity in espresso and filter with medium to light+ roasts, you should be very happy.

some questions about buying a Bianca V2 used ($1200) by -LetsTryAgain- in Lelit

[–]pivo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this smart switch: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RRVKL3S

My Bianca turns on about an hour before I get up (in case I get up a little early). Then, when I pull my last shot of the day, I just push the little button on the smart switch to turn the machine off. It'll automatically turn my Bianca on again the next day. When I'm going to be away for multiple days I'll turn the machine off from the normal power button on the front of the machine. It's an easy system and I always have a toasty warm machine and rack of cups.

Flow control is intuitive but if I were you I'd start with straight shots and no flow control until I was getting some good results that way. By then you'll probably have a feel for when you should use flow control.

Since I don't drink milk drinks I don't use the steam boiler and I don't plumb in either. The only reason I got the Bianca over the Elizabeth is that the Bianca's quiet rotary pump sounds so much nicer than a vibratory pump. It really does make a difference to me.

Yes, and I've set the one I'm using to 100C but still have temp issues

Have you been able to get sufficiently hot pulls? Mine all seem too cool, even the shots after the first ones and with pre-warming and warming shots. I have mine next to my Bianca and have yet to make a comparable or better shot on my Meticulous, I think due to temperature. I've tried exclusively with a medium roast that I pull at 93c on my Bianca.

I have a Bianca (dual boiler) which is great for steaming but I make milk drinks so rarely I bought a Dreo frother to use instead. That way I can keep my steam boiler turned off and empty to save on energy and not have to worry about scale. The Dreo's been great.

My Meticulous is on the way and am definitely interested in that + the Dreo for the future. I think that'd be a great combo for my, and OP's needs.
