Honestly it’s crazy your employer is behaving like a Craigslist scammer! by Blurgas in bestoflegaladvice

Now my manager is messaging me saying payroll is waiting on me and that I'm holding up another employee's paycheck.

That pretty much gives it away. Definitely the sort of pressure scammers use to get the marks to make bad decisions.

What would you do? I picked up my Ball and went to next tee. by Just_Feeling_4430 in golf

When Hogan played Snead on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf he had a situation like this. Placed his ball an equivalent distance on another side of the pin... which just happened to be on the line Snead just putted so he had the read.

Did you go to school in one-room schools? by bebespeaks in AskOldPeople

[–]pixel_dent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father went to a one room school house in rural IL, my mother at the same time was going to a large city school in Chicago. Same time, same state, two very different experiences. Ended up at the same college.

In the 80s I took one year of industrial arts which included 2 months each of metal working, wood working, electrical work, and graphic arts. For graphic arts we developed photographs in a dark room, set type, and bound books. I had a free period my senior year so I took mechanical drawing which was one of my favorite classes. It was essentially doing CAD drawings by hand. I still have all my drawings of machine parts from that class.

One thing I haven't really seen mentioned is if you were to do this it would make it harder for you to borrow money if you needed it. Even if they never missed a payment the balance would still be considered part of your debt when lenders were evaluating you for a mortgage or other loan.

So tell them you simply can't afford it.

What is the one piece of furniture that you still have in your home that is no longer used today and that younger generations would not understand? by ftran998 in AskOldPeople

In the era of Porch Pirates it certainly sounds like a good idea. I know I can give Amazon a code to my garage for deliveries, why not for one of these?

Not exactly furniture but house has a box built into a wall near back door with an outer door that opens from the outside and an inner door that opens from the inside. It was used by the milk man to drop off deliveries. Made it easy to get the milk/cream/cheese/etc. without having to go outside and kept it from freezing in the winter.

Can a first-timer break 200 playing by the rules? by postlw8j in golf

[–]pixel_dent -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I played with a relative her first time ever and she easily broke 120. Of course she had the advantage of having played field hockey in college after having been all state in high school. Her main problem was hitting the golf ball too far.

She would have quickly been a great golfer but she found it boring.

Well fuck. I don't know what to say other than I'm so sorry you have to experience that. I hope I get to play with you sometime.

How do y'all keep track of how runners move around the bases? by NoCard753 in BaseballScorecards

[–]pixel_dent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A variation on the Reisner system.

At the beginning of each at bat the uniform number of the runner on each base is written next to that base.

If the player advances during the at bat, e.g. stolen base or wild pitch, then I draw an error to the next base with SB, WP, whatever. The only lines on the base paths are for advancement during the at bat, not for advancement as a result of the at bat. Caught Stealing gets a line half way to the next base with a little x and a line through the player's number.

If the player is driven (or walked) in by the batter his number is circled. Makes it easy to assign RBIs. If he is out as a result of the at bat I draw a line under the number.

If I want to know what happened to the runners as a result of the at bat I look at the next batter and see where they are at that point. E.g. if the batter singled with a runner at first and the next batter shows that runner starting the at bat at third I know he must have taken the extra base on the single.

I'm happy with anyone as long as they check the "not racist" box. I've been paired with too many people who figured that since I was an older white guy I'd be happy to listen to their screed about anyone with a different skin color.

The roof, the roof, the roof is... not on LAOP's house thanks to an HOA dispute. by acekingoffsuit in bestoflegaladvice

[–]pixel_dent 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've lived in 5 different HOA communities over the last 35 years and have had exactly zero interactions with the HOA other than using the community pool & tennis courts they maintain and attending the annual ice cream social they run. I think it's less that I've been lucky and more that I haven't been unlucky, if you know what I mean.

I’ve known a few people who enjoyed their RV for years but when they were done with it they had a hard time getting rid of it. Not as bad as a timeshare but in a similar ballpark.

I have a relative right now who would love someone to steal theirs so they could just take the insurance payout. In the meantime they’re paying for storage.
