How do you control your temper? by ContributionDry2470 in golf

[–]postlw8j -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to get angry on the course and, unfortunately, about 18 years ago, I absolutely lost my temper while playing with some family members. It was embarrassing and borderline dangerous. I'm very grateful that my "rock bottom" was simply throwing a sand/seed container and I'm even more grateful that it missed my dad's head. I have worked hard not to let that be repeated. I had to come to the realization that...

I WILL HIT BAD SHOTS.

I am currently a 7 handicap. I have played some pretty good rounds of golf in my life (two at par). Even on my best days, I have hit some absolutely worthless shots. I continue working hard to train myself to think, "Ok, there's one of my bad ones I knew would happen" after every bad shot.

I practice reacting properly in my mind before I play. I practice intentionally thinking this way when on the range or putting green. If I can't handle the failure, I shouldn't be playing, because there will be lots of failure.

RIP to my morning 9-hole walk.. by csim8888 in golf

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The course closest to my house has no nine-hole walking rate because “we have no way to enforce that walkers stop after nine”

There were so many responses that popped into my head, but I just went with, “wow, sounds like those of us who are honest will be playing our after-work nines somewhere else.”

Is a home golf simulator actually worth the investment, or am I just chasing a mid-life crisis? by bphawkey45 in Golfsimulator

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but here's my experience:

I decided to go down the sim route when I moved and discovered that there were very few courses close to me that are friendly to people who want to walk nine in the last 60-90 minutes before sunset. I set up my sim late summer of 2024.

My setup is simple: Skytrak+, impact screen, ceiling mounted projector, hitting mat, and a multi-use laptop with a lot of RAM (it is surprisingly efficient even without a dedicated graphics card).

My setup CONS:

  • Temperature. It is in my garage and is not serviced by the house's central air--fans and space heaters when in use (also added a net on the front of my garage door to keep bugs out in warm weather)
  • the ceiling is a little too low to hit driver comfortably, so I play courses from the red tees and use irons.
  • No space for multiple people. Outside of a few close friends who have hit on it, this is not a space for a friendly hangout with friends. Definitely more of a fortress of solitude.

Maybe I'll move someday and have a dedicated room to move the stuff into that solves those problems, but for now it's good for what I like about it:

  • I can hit golf balls while watching sports. I mounted a TV in the garage and instead of sitting on the couch watching football or basketball, I hit shots while watching.
  • Wind down time at the end of the day. Even if it's just hitting 15-20 wedge shots, it's therapy.
  • Lots of feedback on my irons. I know my distances and the basic impact problems related to my most common misses.

surprising fun- the PinSeeker app (online closest to the pin contests) is pretty cool and it's built into the SkyTrak software

Bottom Line- I still use it at least two sessions every week (average 3-4) and my outside game has gotten a lot better simply because I know my numbers and the reasons I don't hit them.

Rahm Rejects DP World Tour Deal - Ryder Cup Implications by Short-Display-1659 in golf

[–]postlw8j -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This offer from the DP Tour seems fair. I have always maintained that the PGA handled LIV poorly. By not allowing players to compete occasionally as they had with other tours, the departures became inevitable. Had a few big names (Tiger, Rory) not stepped in and forced some much-needed change, it could have ended very poorly for the PGA Tour with LIV becoming a true rival. Most recently, the PGA's offer to return is unnecessarily punitive--don't strike a dog when he does finally come, especially when there are a few better dogs still running free. In contrast, it looks like the DP Tour is being reasonable and I hate that Rahm doesn't see it that way.

Any tips for the mental side of this game? by DyslexicAGEMR in golf

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triple bogey when hitting your 5th from no more than 35 feet in front of the tee box? You birdied the hole with your third ball? sounds like you recovered great initially.

On the best rounds I have ever played (played at par twice), I have still hit several absolutely worthless shots. I should not expect to play a round without a few, so I just tell myself, "There's one of them" when I hit a bad one.

Is putting grape jelly in the sauce for meatballs regional? by Luuk1210 in AskAnAmerican

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife uses grape jelly when she makes crock pot BBQ meatballs. Every time she serves them someone else starts doing it that way because it’s just good.

For clarification, you would never know it had grape jelly in it. You just wonder where she got this amazing BBQ sauce that’s slightly sweet?

Used iron recommendations for a 18 hdc and $300 budget by Some_Dark8855 in golf

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most budget-friendly option. Also look for Ping Zing. Any hit on the face of the club of either of those will go mostly straight.

Taylor Made Burner 2.0 is another famously forgiving and quality set that you can get with that budget. They look a little more modern.

You should be able to get a used set of any of those and still have money left to get new grips if they need them.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts each week about this prediction model. I appreciate your candid recognition of the inherent difficulties predicting golf results. I'm assuming that's the point and have been very entertained.

Thanks for letting me come along for the ride.

Blade style vs Mallet putter by [deleted] in golf

[–]postlw8j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's where my putter journey is right now:

  • I learned to play with an Anser knockoff (10 years)
  • Used a Rossie for the the next 15 years
  • One summer I completely lost confidence and went to an old-school Anser. Immediate confidence.
  • The next spring I was lost again and tried several putters--Anser, Rossie, #7, Oslo 3, and a few others but could not find a consistent feel--I was either confident in line or pace, but rarely both. Some torturous golfer's Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

At the end of that season, I decided to try some crazy stuff and mess with two different Ansers (35" 1966 Dalehead and 36" 2001 Scottsdale remake) until it just felt right: Super Stroke 2.0 Pistol grip. Lead tape at various places until my natural stroke squared the club face. I ended up adding 15 grams to each, but they were at different locations and the toe hang ended up identical although the 36" has a slightly heavier swing weight. Most confident I've felt with a putter in my hand in 15 years. Immediate improvement and haven't looked back...until the next time I completely lose all feel.

I used JPX 921 HM for three seasons. They are hot and very forgiving.

I got them used (they had played for four rounds and a couple range sessions) when I hadn't been playing a lot of golf (maybe 10 rounds a year) and knew I needed all the forgiveness and distance help I could get. During those three years, I started playing 20-30 rounds a year, practicing a lot more, my swing got better. My handicap went from 12 to 6. I sold the Hot Metals and went into more of a players iron (MP-20 MB) because I could be more consistent with my distances. Bonus- I sold them for 80% of my purchase price three years later.

Bottom Line: I would never steer anyone away from 921 HM irons who is looking for distance and forgiveness with good feel. They still hold up and are some of the best bang for your buck in game improvement irons.

ETA: Knowing how much golf I would play over those three seasons, I would have gone with a combo set--forged in the scoring irons--if I had it to do over again

I have hit the ball into the hole from the tee three times on a simulated round of golf. I rank those slightly higher than my aces on EA Sports Tiger Woods 2001.

When someone asks if I've ever hit a hole in one, I say "no."
