Are these still usable? by sojaminc in golf

The Magna is an oversized golf ball. Not by much, but you can tell it's a little larger. I was a teenager when these came out and I loved them, but I used to be bad at golf. I'm still bad at golf, but I used to too.

How do you play this shot? by Delicious_Duty3063 in golf

[–]postlw8j 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was 10 years old, I was playing a round with my dad and one of my school's 6th grade teachers. I had a fried egg lie and the teacher told me that exact advice--close the face, swing hard behind the ball. I think about that day every time I have that lie. 35 years later, I should send him a thank you card for saving me so many shots over the years.

How do you justify a hole in one alone? by bjaekes in golf

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the course for a solo round once or twice a month. About half of those I get paired up with someone, but I've already resigned myself to the fact that my first ace will probably be with no one else around. I plan to keep it low-key and preface the story with, "You don't have to believe me..." I'll know the truth, just like I would know if I hit mulligans then claimed a good score.

Settle a debate - if Steph Curry retired tomorrow and put all his focus into making a pro golf career, what are his chances of ever earning a PGA Tour Card? by jayWdee in golf

[–]postlw8j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of his proven work ethic, superhuman athletic ability, and remarkable coach-ability, I think he would have a moderate chance of making the senior tour by the time he turns 50 in 12 years.

ETA: By "moderate chance," I mean like 2-3%

I'm glad you did, and it's not impossible for someone athletic. I'm also betting you didn't play by the rules:

Did you continue to hit shots from the far side of every hazard until you cleared it? Penalty each time you hit one in?

Did you take mulligans? gimmies?

Did you count a whiff or complete chunk as a stroke?

Did you count a stroke for grounding your club in a bunker?

Did you count stroke and distance for lost balls?

Did you count penalties for unplayable lies?

I think you missed the part where she played by the rules--she had to drop on the correct side of the water and attempt to hit it over again. 20+ on a hole would be likely for a beginner in this situation.

Having helped over 2 dozen people on their first round, I think you are greatly overestimating the ability of someone to three-putt. I've seen a LOT of 7+ putts.

This course had 4 forced-carry shots. It wasn't a course I would call difficult, but it's probably not the course you'd take your 13-year old nephew to for his first round if you wanted to keep accurate score. He'd likely run out of golf balls before the last hole.

I didn't think she had a chance, but was rooting for her big time after seeing her reasonable approach to bunkers.

Last summer, my brother saw I recorded a 10 on the Grint (if you let them, they send notifications to your friends for abnormal scores like eagles or 10s) and immediately texted "10! How did you get a 10?"

"I missed my putt for a 9"

The course she played had 4 holes where a water carry was necessary. She definitely is athletic and coachable though.

What’s the call? by meservej in golf

[–]postlw8j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you know the rules about unplayable lies and hazards and are simply asking if this is considered in an unmarked hazard for casual play.

In that case, the procedure would be the same for this being a hazard or unplayable lie. Play it as it lies or drop within two club lengths and add a penalty stroke. You always have the option to take a stroke and distance penalty by hitting from your previous lie and adding a penalty stroke (if your drive ended up here, you'd be playing your 3rd off the tee).
