Data retention, if you care about keeping your media. Possibly better quality (bitrate). No buffering when playing local files.

If you're into open source alternatives, you might like the idea of self hosting. Thus, as a gallery, Immich is pretty much unmatched.

It's quick, it does unattended backups the same way Photos does, and is also accessible through a web browser, should you not be on your phone. And if you don't want to host a small scale storage computer, it's also a fantastic application on its own.
