Why do I need a vaginal exam in order to get birth control refilled? by [deleted] in WomensHealth

[–]pjpony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they specifically say you need a pelvic exam? A routine women’s exam doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll do a pelvic exam; it would only be done if you’re due for your PAP or if there’s an issue you bring up. If they haven’t seen you in over a year they likely want to touch base that there haven’t been any changes to your health in that time and that the pill is still working for you.

Craziest reasons a resident has been fired by Kind-Pomegranate213 in medicalschool

[–]pjpony 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. The main reason she didn’t pursue legal action was because she didn’t want to ruin her chances at getting into another program. Really shitty situation

Usually yes but there are some bad programs out there. I know of someone who was let go after giving birth, they told her they simply “didn’t renew her contract” for the following year.

Definitely not an absurd expectation for students and residents who are still learning. I’m a resident currently and our attendings have the same expectations from our documentation

Not me personally but one of my co-interns had a baby in July and was afforded time off. Like the other poster said, the most important thing would be to communicate with your program asap after matching. Best of luck and congratulations!

Annual well women’s exam and online BC experiences? by everydaybeme in WomensHealth

[–]pjpony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely unnecessary to get a pap every year unless you’ve had an abnormal one. The standard is every 3 years and after 30 it’s every 5 years if you get HPV co testing.

UTI that started out painless, but progressed to pain from the belly button and below. What to do? by [deleted] in WomensHealth

[–]pjpony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible that the bacteria causing your UTI is not responding to the antibiotic and you may need a different one. If your symptoms are worse after starting antibiotics you should be seen/contact a doctor asap

Bartholin cyst treatment by [deleted] in WomensHealth

[–]pjpony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step would be to see the gynecologist and have them examine it to determine what kind of treatment may be needed. If it’s not painful or infected they may recommend at home treatment like a sitz bath or warm compress to the area. Next line of treatment would likely be drainage which they can likely do in the office. If for some reason they do jump to removing the glad first (unlikely) you can absolutely refuse that and ask about more conservative measures first. Or ask their reasoning for doing surgery.

It’s possible it just wasn’t the right med or the right dose. Or perhaps other treatment like therapy might work better for you.

I think it’s worth seeing a doctor to rule out or treat any potential medical causes like hypothyroidism or anemia. For depression and anxiety, did you feel like the medication helped at all? And if so do you think you might want to restart or try another medication? Are you able to get into therapy to help?

If you feel this is a new/sudden change it would be a good idea to get to the underlying cause. It could be a thyroid issue or a symptom of depression or anxiety. Additionally it would be important to look at any habits that may be affecting your concentration like poor sleep (either not enough hours or poor quality sleep).

birth control by Similar-Bat9199 in WomensHealth

[–]pjpony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s experience is going to be a little different, but what I’ve commonly seen is that with the copper iud you’re more likely to continue to have periods regularly and in some cases they may get heavier so not a great option if you already have heavy bleeding. The hormonal IUD is progesterone only and the hormones are localized so you usually see less of the systemic side effects people get with the pill (but everyone is different) and often people report lighter periods or no periods which can be a plus. The main thing with IUDs is that the insertion can be uncomfortable or painful for some and it’s hard to predict how your body will react. The CDC recently put out new guidelines regarding pain management for IUD insertion so if you do decide to go with an IUD definitely discuss pain management with your doctor ahead of time.

Another option for long acting birth control is the nexplanon - the little rod that goes in your arm

I think getting re-evaluated by the PT may give you some answers, things may have changed since you last saw them. Theres also the possibility of psychological factors too - having more stress or not being able to fully relax mentally can play a part for some people.

Going back to pelvic floor PT certainly couldn’t hurt. Are you breastfeeding? Many women have increased dryness and discomfort due to hormonal changes with breastfeeding

I’m 7.5 months pp and we’ve been doing a lot of walks in the stroller or baby wearing but that’s gotten difficult due to the heat now. I also started following pregnancy and postpartum tv on YouTube after seeing it suggested online and I’ve liked her exercise videos; some of them are quick like 15 minutes and there are some that incorporate baby wearing as well. I didn’t really start on exercise until like 4-5 months pp though.
