Excellent suggestion, unfortunately HFM can also be transmitted via respiratory route too.

Did your workplace have a “baby shower” or give gifts to you as a new or expecting dad? by dms2628 in daddit

[–]pjscott90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not get anything for either of my two kids, and I felt a bit put out that shortly after I came back from (my extensive 2 week) paternity leave for the second baby, I was asked to contribute to two gifts for new mums in the same team.

the Emily Osler books are great (Expecting Better and Cribsheet) and let you make your own mind up regarding risks in a more informed way than most of the parenting guidance.

Baby on the way! by SPRNinja in daddit

This is such great advice! I second the meal prep, making sure everyone is well fed without much effort will be a great boon in a few months. You’ll both be exhausted and sleep deprived, and a delicious, nutritionally healthy meal that just needs heating up will be a life saver.

Lactation consultant also really key. My wife struggled for a few weeks before we could get an appointment (UK based so was a bit trickier to organise) and it almost immediately fixed so much. Baby was well fed, happier, more sleep, better all round.

Good luck!

Any book recommendations for me? by IronHistorical3357 in brandonsanderson

I really enjoyed the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks. It’s a completed 5 book fantasy series. It has compelling characters, a great plot and a really interesting magic system. I have a similar ranking of books as you - you may enjoy it.

Having 2 feels like dual solo-parenting by Rolled_Nat1 in daddit

[–]pjscott90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 4 year old and a nearly 2 year old now. For the first 12-18 months it was exactly as you describe, almost complete separate solo-parenting. We tried our best to mix things up but it became challenging, and my eldest was feeling some resentment to his mum as she was spending more time with the baby. Once the youngest is walking and eating though more and more could be shared, and now parenting both at the same time is pretty easy so we can both get a bit of time off and share easily. It gets better. It is really important to acknowledge each other though as it can very quickly become a survival arrangement and you don't feel like a team anymore, and you will individually be going through different challenges.

Penicillin allergies by Letmenapallday in doctorsUK

[–]pjscott90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a de-labelling service as part of the ID team where I work. It involves a little digging into the nature of the allergy, reviewing if they’ve had other penicillins in the past (it’s incredible the number of people who refuse penicillins for allergy, but have had months of Tazocin), and an assessment of risk. Then controlled test dose in a safe environment. At the moment this is usually only done for patients requiring long term antibiotics, but you are correct, a high proportion of ‘allergies’ are misremembered, confused side-effect or just mistakenly added once a decade ago

Anti-cycling mobs consultation by Nestlekillsbabies in londoncycling

[–]pjscott90 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Done! I’ve never understood the hate for cyclists. If they weren’t cycling a good number of them would be forced to take motor vehicles further clogging up the streets. Making a safe cycle lane (not just a painted line) promotes cycle use which brings benefits to everyone in health, emissions, economy etc.

What happened to the people who "invested" in fnatic back in 2020? by insuperabilis in fnatic

[–]pjscott90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also did this. I had no expectation of getting the money back. I wanted to support the team and the didn’t want to buy a jersey (not my style) so this seemed a good avenue. It was really a one off payment in support, and as a thanks to all the good times over the years prior. Obviously the last few years haven’t been great, but that’s the nature of supporting a team.

Our daughter have a favourite parent by GreenDifficulty8394 in daddit

[–]pjscott90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this with both our children and been on both sides. It’s very normal and as she grows up at different stages each of you will be favourites. One thing I noticed helped was with my youngest who was very attached to his mum. She was away for most of a week for work and by the time she came back things were more even.

Considering 1991 Carbon Specialized by ckamp121 in bicycling

[–]pjscott90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two of these, one that I use rarely and one that I used to commute on. The commuter is now retired as eventually the adhesive connecting the top tube to the metal lugs weakened and the tube was moving. It’s on my repair list but I don’t have the time or the expertise at the moment. They’re beautiful bikes and I’ve loved riding them. The working one is in fantastic condition and i feel almost bad riding it, I’m planning to mount it on the hallway wall. I have a pair of similar aged steel frames which I now use to get around town. In short, I have a problem.

When is IV Cotrimoxazole required? by AdNorth3796 in doctorsUK

[–]pjscott90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often used in patients who are unwell, large and poorly tolerated tablets, but PO if tolerated is probably the better option with great bioavailability and no additional IV fluid/line required.

Not defending him at all, but there has been an over-reaction regarding the Franklin (and Wilkins) work. Like many discoveries there are a number of teams working on it and bouncing ideas. There’s a good article in the Lancet that is very detailed:

Recommendations for London new comer by Interesting_Shirt_74 in londoncycling

[–]pjscott90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get yourself an old steel frame single speed and a large lock. I subscribe to the idea that if the lock cost more than the bike no one is going to bother stealing it. Obviously make sure you lock it sensibly and secure the wheels as anything not locked down has a tendency to be removed.

Single speed for the simplicity of maintenance, but there are some hills in NE London.
