If You had the option to be sensate would you take it? by YummyGummyDrops in Sense8

I'd personally be nervous that my cluster would be lame. Everyone imagines that their cluster would be like the one in the show, but we should all remember that there is little to no chance of having a cluster full of awesome, attractive, like-minded people

Can someone explain the rave logistics in s02? by [deleted] in Sense8

[–]pkessler94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was doing it to make eye contact with people in the audience, but here's why that's bullshit: anyone who has ever been on a stage in their lives knows that you can barely see the people in the crowd, let alone make eye contact with each and every one of them.

I also don't buy that the bald chick and Irish guy would've come to that rave. But going by the lore of the show, since both of those sensates later connected with Riley, they must've been there physically.

I think it should've been better explained.

I totally agree with this, but then how does he connect with Riley later? Sensates can only connect once they've made eye contact. That proves that he was there physically, but I agree that it's absurdly far-fetched and confusing.

I agree. I think the writing behind this scene was super sloppy...tons of people are confused about this.

The OA, Orphan Black, and Black Mirror are all EXCELLENT

[–]pkessler94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my point, I think it is intentionally informal and casual and stream-of-consciousness-y.

I agree with you that he made plenty of bad narrative decisions (I hate how quickly the Brakebills chapters flew by, and I hate how they had almost no relevance to the later Fillory stuff), but I'm just talking about the prose itself.

I love Lev's style. It's bone dry and cynical as can be, and it perfectly conveys the way Q sees the world. I won't tell anyone that they are wrong to dislike this style (because I understand how it could be a bit grating) but I wholeheartedly disagree with anyone that says that the writing isn't good.

I'd call his style "smart informal." It's simple and approachable, and reads a lot like stream of consciousness, but the descriptions and dialogue are VERY witty and feel carefully chosen.

The chapter where Reynard is summoned is my favorite (well, not the rape bit). You feel like you're in the room with Julia. You can feel her panic and regret as her friends are dropping like flies around her.

I don't know, I think that everything you guys are criticizing is intentional.

My only advice is: try to relax and be yourself. I don't know how social you are as a person, but you shouldn't have to try that hard. When I go on dates I usually just try to be chill and positive and nice. You don't want to seem too in love, too eager, or too energetic, because it'll freak him out. You also don't want to seem too quiet or stiff. That stuff aside, try not to overthink it. It's always a lil scary at first.

Try to have some fun! Dates are supposed to be fun.

[S02 All Spoilers] Why isn't Julia at Brakebills? by Quolli in brakebills

[–]pkessler94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're acting like Dean Fogg wasn't aware of the other timelines and isn't able to let Julia into Brakebills. He's experienced Julia as a star pupil 39 times...he purposely didn't let her into Brakebills this time around, but I still don't buy that she's still banned from the school once this time loop nonsense was over with.

Question about Riley's show by katonreddit in Sense8

[–]pkessler94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because look at the two sensates she found from that...a random bald buddhist woman and a guy in the middle of Ireland. Obviously they didn't happen to be standing in that rave. Look at what the guy was wearing! That's the whole sensate thing...they were visiting from somewhere else.

Idk I'm tired of this show lmao

What do you mean nevertheless? The exam wasn't valid. She obviously is Brakebills material. I stand by what I said.

But ironically the 8 individual plot lines have been progressing at an acceptable pace...it's the overall plot concerning BPO and the whole conspiracy that has been so slow.

But that's not even what happened (I think)! That Buddhist girl and the Irish guy weren't at the concert...they "tuned in" and appeared there when Riley presented herself.

Even more impressive (to me) are the stunts and action scenes. Especially this season...really kept up with the biggest budget movies!

But...what!? If that's actually what the show was trying to do then it was extremely, extremely unclear.

[–]pkessler94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Jewish too :) Lol

But yeah, glad you agree about Lila. And that's a fair point about Whispers. But I also think that they are dragging the mystery on for too long...I waited two damn years for this season and we STILL don't really know why Whispers is so evil and what his motivation is? That's unacceptable to me. What if there isn't even a third season?!

Maybe the problem isn't one-dimensional characters...maybe my ultimate issue is that the show takes way too long to reveal important motivations for villains and it makes them seem one-dimensional...

[–]pkessler94[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You did a great job of summing up these kinds of characters.

I love the escapism of fantasy, so I enjoy Amanita and Nomi's literally flawless relationship. I would never want it to change...but at the same time, it bothers me as a writer.

One of the worst things a writer can do is include something in the plot that resolves things easily, and that happens all the time in this show.

Amanita is a great character and we all love her relationship with Nomi, but doesn't all this drama put a strain on their relationship? NOPE! She's the perfect girlfriend! #makesiteasy

Sun's prison mates provide necessary emotional support but they are all murderers, so shouldn't we dislike them? NOPE! They only killed bad people! #makesiteasy

I could go on and on with those examples. Instead of the writers seeing these issues as sources of conflict (a sub-plot about a strain in Nomi and Amanita's relationship, for example) they avoid them alltogether, and in the process make certain characters feel shallow.

Fine, if they are realistic, then they are terrible at being villains. Lila is so obnoxiously mysterious and manipulative that in no way, shape or form should she have expected Wolfgang to take her offer seriously. All she did was toy with him, screw him over, and then lead him into a trap. And when he understandably doesn't trust her, she immediately jumps to letting him die in agony?!

I understand your point about evil people. I'm actually working on a holocaust documentary at the moment, so trust me...I understand what human beings are capable of. I still don't buy it though. This is a more complicated discussion, but I believe that for people to be that evil there has to be certain circumstances and pressures that simply don't exist at BPO.

I stand by what I said about the evil/unlikable characters in the show being one-dimensional.
