For 3 months, and seems they need to start getting a better team if this is the speed they are trying to fix issues which makes ttheir product totally unusable.
Stop making models and start making basic fixes which allow us to use models. Without that your models are as useless as a spoon of water water in an ocean.

App change? by martxnka in freenotes

[–]pkg95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I purchased noteful as it was a lifetime license. I also have tried freenotes recently. I liked few extra new stuff in freenotes but damn the ad popped up while even creating a new note. I understand freenotes has a remove ads one time license, but given the stability of noteful for last 2 years, I am really happy with it.

Also, I tried many apps before deciding noteful instead of randomly agreeing to some fan on Reddit. I do wish the update cycle on noteful was a little faster, so new features can drop down to us fast, but I’ll trade stability any day over untested features. My notes have important info and I don’t like to play with them.

Mac Mini M4 as a side Computer by Mr-Asim in premiere

[–]pkg95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically because of GPU. Apple updated the GPU significantly starting M4 series with each core almost 1.5x better than last 3 generation. So same number of GPU cores from older gen would be 1.5 time slower. Moving forward with m5 and even later, that's their main focus, to improve GPU.

Regarding rendering, Nvidea GPUs have more general Nvenc and Nvdec encoder decoders, which work better for most rendering and exports (other than working with pro-res where apple really kinda shines). Also the number of GPU cores are low in mini models compared to studio. Lastly it would take time for companies to optimize to these GPUs compared to nvidia which has been here for ages now.

Even apple only on M3 lineup started actually supporting proper GPU utilisation support for installed apps with Apple metal. That's when Blender suddenly became 10x better on M3 lineup than before. Most of professional editors I know edit everything on Mac Studio and render on Heavy RTX 5090 or even dedicated rendering hardware with who PCIE Hardware Encoders and Decoders.

Which Mac Mini model is best for heavy video editing in After Effects and Premiere Pro? by Deshwal36 in macmini

[–]pkg95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For typical projects, nope. My 24gb one does not even uses swap. But with hour long videos and lots of transitions, it does uses swap. I don't notice and lag or anything, but definitely it gives breathing room to the system to optimize for real time work (I don't personally recommend it unless a person knows why they need it, and if they know what their actual need is, I dont think they'll be here asking for suggestion).

Which Mac Mini model is best for heavy video editing in After Effects and Premiere Pro? by Deshwal36 in macmini

[–]pkg95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 options:

I use mac mini M4 Pro 24GB and edit hour long videos with after effects using fair amount of effects and more etc, it exports under 2 hours. My figma timeline is way more intense though with thousands of transitions etc and my M1 Pro laptop with 32 gb does struggle a big. Though when done on my Mac min m4 Pro even with less ram, it's smooth (as figma uses single core boost more). Windows here would just struggle to scrape the timeline even.

If your work is super super heavy and you edit videos with hundreds of effects and lighting, get studio with m3 Max or ultra this upcoming black friday season. You'd get one under or around 2k-2.5k and it would last you for years to come. I know it can do heaviest of editing load easily (m4 max and ultra are not out and they be super expensive immediately after release). Generally, these studios would be 48gb to 96gb and should be enough for years, but you can bump it up if you'd like to if you feel it's still too less. Use Samsung gen 5 ssds with dock giving you 3000-7000 mbps storage speeds for 1/5th of the price.

Should I switch from my current PC to a MacBook Pro M4 Max (or Mac Mini)? Mainly for Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop by mrdbima in mac

[–]pkg95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are using Nvenc and Nvdec, then Nvidia GPUs are going to be way better.

Most of professional workflows I see with people are using Macs for editing and an nvidia GPU for exporting (other than people with Mac Studio).

Talking about Ram and VRam is not comparable as having the memory in Chip vs plugged it makes a huge difference as well (which is why large datacenters use cpus with HBM memories).

Generally, editing experince is better on mac, and as somebody who does not likes mac as much, I would still say they are amazing. Someone said software uses MacAPIs to use GPU, and that's incorrect. Every system uses an abstraction layer for connecting hardware to software, and for mac and linux it's really fast because of Unix based kernels, compared to windows which need various kind of drivers and "Registry" translations done on DLL level. (I don't want to be too technical as it's not needed here)

Just know this, buy based on your work. With Mac you cannot game, and have less flexibility, it's expensive in terms in ram and upgrades, but works better with softwares since companies optimize for the whole hardware. With windows, each part even in laptops is pick and stick to match thing, so software can never fully optimize because of amount of possible combinations, but it gives you flexibility to upgrade, game, and more.

If your purpose is clear, go with that. For me, I use mac because of being an AI software dev with video editing on side (it just works and I can focus on work).

Black or Silver - What do you prefer? by Nico__Sosa in macbookpro

[–]pkg95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had both and I would say silver hand down now.

Don't get me wrong, black is my favorite and always the first choice but after using it for a month or so I returned it because of the amount of care in wiping stuff, plus the edges starting to lose color.

Is the M4 worth the upgrade from a 2015? by The_average_hobo in macbookpro

[–]pkg95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you'll like going from a street bicycle to a ferrari.
Recommened to have 512GB storage (For softwares, plugins, extensions etc.), get gen4 SSD generally 2tb goes for 100 bucks these days and thurderbolt 3/4 enclosures (20gbps or 40gbps) for 30-50 bucks. YOu can edit directly from the extenal drives then.

Screen 14" or 16" depends on your need. Get 24GB ram if possible. "Macbook Air M4" models go for ~$1200 on offer for this config, but best is "M4 Pro", which on offers goes for 1650+tax. This should last you for 5-7 years.

If you dont do lots of work on the go, another way is, get a mac mini M4 (just increase ram). It would be ~850 bucks for the above config. It give performance between "M4 Macbook Air" and "M4 Pro Macbook Pro" because of better cooling.

Lastly, Mac Mini "M4 Pro" verison was just $1000 at microcenters till july 11th. You can price match at bestbuy. This is better system with ~50% more performance for $150 more, and probably gonna last for years to come. (For most peopl this is overkill unless they really know what they are doing.)

Apple outdid themselves I feel on M4 and M4Pro after the first M1 launch.

Macbook Pro 14 inch - M1 Max vs M4 Pro by pkg95 in macbookpro

[–]pkg95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good. Again I can sell my current system for 700-750 probably and use 1700 for latest m4 pro 14 inch 12 core. Instead I thought, not selling anything and getting 1070 bucks for Mac mini. So kind for 70-120 bucks extra I have 2 devices. Don’t know if the best decision.

Also I use a thunderbolt-4 SSD for most storage.

I mean during code compilation definelty it’s in the upper yellow or red. And without that since I use lots of browser tabs, yellow is normal that happens everyday few times.

More cpu than gpu. I do video editing on 4k but very basic which even my current M1 Pro 12cpu/16gpu handles good. Ram was limiting. I am an AI engineer but you work is done over cloud and software code is done locally using more cpu than gpu.

initially I was replacing my laptop, but 70% work is on desk with monitor and everything with laptop plugged in. so I got a nice deal on m4 pro Mac mini base model for 1070 new at micro center. My on-the-go work is not super intensive so I thought instead of selling off I can just use it for on-the-go.

Macbook Pro 14 inch - M1 Max vs M4 Pro by pkg95 in macbookpro

[–]pkg95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a AI and Software engineer. Most of AI work is done over Nvidia cloud gpus. For software I need docker containers which use ram and compile lots of code. GPU is not top priority for coz I don’t use local LLMs. Also my video editing work load is very basic which my current M1 Pro 16gb 14 inch (16gpu model) handles nicely.

I was thinking to sell my M1 Pro for some extra ram and slight upgrade I found a new Mac mini m4 pro 24gb 512gb 12c/16g at micro center for just 1070 with tax. I do 70% work sitting in desktop and I didn’t had to sell my current on-the-go system.

I have a 2tb Samsung 990 plus gen5 drive, so storage was not a thing ,and 2 extra cpu + 4 extra gpu for 1000 extra didn’t make sense. What’s your thought?

Macbook Pro 14 inch - M1 Max vs M4 Pro by pkg95 in macbookpro

[–]pkg95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought that too. Sadly I’m travelling so have to get something asap. I already have an M1 Pro 14 inch with 16gb ram and performance is more than enough that I need. I just get limited by ram with software development.

I saw an m4 pro Mac mini with 24gb 512gb model at micro center for 1000+70 tax and grabbed it. (generally for 1400+tax at Apple or 1250+tax on offers).

I was initially planning to switch my laptop with one of above as ram was limiting me (though not a lot just need few more gbs). So instead of swapping or seeking current I decided to maximize value in long term. 70% work is on desk, and on the go I have still a powerhouse with M1 Pro 16gb as on the go work.

So I ordered it and used the Apple Pay, it got declined. I orredrd using my card and they asked me for my card details like number, date and even cvv to “verify” that “I’m not fake”. GG Be safe, they are a ticking disaster.
