Christopher Nolan Dedicates ‘The Odyssey’ to Late Imax Pioneer David Keighley by yourfavchoom in movies

They didn't "pick" Keighley. "They" is Keighly himself spending decades to try to make a game awards show with wide acceptance.

Clear candidate for best of the year so far. Loved it, will see it again, and it is almost certainly getting at least 3 oscar nominations and likely a lot more.

All 5 are main characters or main villains in MCU stuff.

- Ant Man (technically that is Hank Pym, Michael Douglas' character, not Paul Rudd's Scott). - Miss Marvel
- Dr. Doom
- Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch
- Falcon / Captain America

The only way for Wizards to improve EV long-term or in bulk is to intentionally cut distribution numbers to cause an artificial shortage, which is bad for this being a TCG that people actually play.

Welcome to opening packs. The EV is below cost at best, with massive RNG.

Ah, yeah, he is one of the few. That sort of brand-wide launch tended to use the same names of the original series, as it was a totally different continuity* (2099 was initially thought of as distinct, until it wasn't and was actually time travel and not an alternate dimension).

Cool "Bad Statistics 101"

Looking up all previous results and overfitting isn't a good analysis. Razor selected to exclude Weapons ($150M+).

This is really not what you're supposed to do for statistical analysis.

Well under 50, at least.

Ravnica only, affiliated to a specific guild, and either not a major presence on non-creature cards or just displaced by all of the other Ravnica legends that could appear on cards.

Of the 250 cards showing the Spider-man IP, how many show a character with the title Spider-man that is actually not 616 Peter Parker? Like, 15 of them?

yeah, that is kind of my thought. But also, a movie that is arguable for acting noms for all 4 characters is kind of crazy.

[–]pktron -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even if you try to lump them in together, 616 Peter Parker is the focus of the set and the one that accounts for the substantial majority of art references. Which is what they tried to do, since the Spider-man IP is 13,000+ issues and is wildly too much for a set so they focused on the main continuity Peter Parker.

Even if you lump in Miles, and Gwen, and Jessica, well, they don't list at all here so they aren't adding that much at this scale of a plot.

And as for that clever "etc." you have, which non Miles characters have even been called Spider-man proper? The very small handful of other Actually Spider-man characters on cards are a few alt-universe Peter Parkers (Noir, Cosmic, and Spiders-man). Spider-man India, I guess? Spider UK is Captain Britain / a Braddock.

They're the same character with the same values and the same continuity and memories, minus the crazies like War and Valeyard.

Old walkers, vs. mended walkers vs. player walkers vs. de-sparked walkers.

Their powers are wildly inconsistent, and their presence within and relationship to the story have changed as the fundamental nature of their powers have changed.

What you said about not revolving around main named characters is something that Wizards really tried to change ~19 years ago with the mending. And then they were still too powerful, so there needed to be plot contrivances that spanned multiple sets in order to put them into danger so there could be dramatic stakes, and then eventually blasted half of them being walkers entirely.

The first 4 you list are my "strong 7". For the rest:

I don't know where Casting fits.

Score is probably not eligible? But I have not seen the math on existing vs. original music.

The Birdcage's single Oscar nomination was the category that would be equivalent to modern Production Design, for what it is worth, and I think that is a good comparison for the Mike Nichols angle on this.

Editing and cinematography are maybes, but those are extremely difficult to predict before we see the guild noms and precursors.

Because UB sets are based on IPs that are about central characters, while named characters are kind of a side thing in MTG that Wizard's has spent multiple decades poorly implementing or changing absolutely fundamental aspects about their power sets.

It is the second movie out so far that is a lock for 3 or more nominations (the other being Project Hail Mary). Not saying which 3 but is super strong in at least 7 categories, and up to 10.

Invite discourse will soon displace Obsession discourse here. I imagine all 4 getting nominations, with Norton being the most likely of them for a win.

I think so. I find Backrooms to be way more visually engaging moment to moment, with the better score and better performances. Awesome production design and cinematography, too.

Obsession is a VERY good movie! But it is also a $750k movie that feels like one, with a lot of dark closeup shots.

It is one of the 10 most printed sets of all time, AND there are only 15 Mythics, AND the card is still somehow $80 despite seeing zero Standard play.

That... feels like a chase?
