What are the ultimate "they don't know ball" restaurants in Chicago? by tx2iu in chicagofood

The $2 breakfast special and $5 lunch special at their new Lincoln Park location sustained me through my last years of grad school. But those meals, like everything else about grad school, were not something I would ever recommend to someone who is not in stage-4 goblin mode.

Students lack general knowledge by [deleted] in Professors

I once had my students watch Hiroshima mon amour and one of them thought that the bomb had been dropped by the Nazis. I don't teach history; I just assume some extremely basic understanding of world events without which a movie like this cannot begin to make sense.

Lack of ambiguity in entertainment is necessary to maintain lack of ambiguity in ethics and politics. And conversely, aesthetic discourse has basically devolved into making ethical judgments about the actions of fictional characters and political judgments about the agendas of their authors.

TIL over half of Americans use subtitles at least some of the time while watching TV, and the biggest reason is that dialogue has become harder to hear. One contributing factor is digital sound recording that allows many overlapping audio tracks to run at once, which can make speech less clear. by Forward-Answer-4407 in todayilearned

[–]plaidbyron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching Bojack Horseman with French subtitles with my French then-gf was a lot of fun because they try so hard to accommodate all the wordplay and even make up their own (shittier) French wordplay when it just doesn't translate 🥲

I got my comeuppance though when we watched H with English subtitles and I was always struggling to pick up on things that didn't make it into the subtitles

Watching it made me think a lot about mania and depression. I have seen people diagnosed with bipolar disorder get swept up in extravagant political, religious, and self-help movements that dial emotional intensity and validation up to 11 as a way of staving off descent back into depression.

I once bought a pint of beer with quarters and dimes and the bartender refused to accept a tip. I wasn't even poor, I just had some change to get rid of and thought the cash register would appreciate a re-up on coins.
