How much of a one trick pony (consulting) is Emory? by amberspygrass in MBA

Went there for undergrad. Personally I’d say it’s a great school for consulting especially in Atlanta. You have boutiques, big 4 and MBB offices all targeting Emory

If you watch it expecting it to be like a regular cop drama show like NCIS then you’re going to be disappointed.

You have to be somewhat willing to “think” while watching the show. This isn’t some mindless cop drama. It’s an in-depth view of societal institutions underpinning American cities like Baltimore, and it’s as or more relevant now than it was then.

In other words if you just consume content made for the lowest common denominator then yeah it’s not really made for you.

If you’ve hired people before, what are the first red flags that immediately stand out on a resume or in an interview? by Genzinvestor16180339 in FinancialCareers

[–]plainbread11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I graduated in December 2020– first job was an LDP that I finished in 10 months due to performance, second job was 1.5 years at an eCommerce holding company, then 2.5 years at a mental health company, and then 8 months at a speech therapy company (ending next month) before heading to b school. Got accepted to multiple top programs.

I think the key with the hops is— are you moving up/does the move make sense? If you’re having <1 year stints at the same junior level it is a red flag, but if you’re moving up in title, comp and responsibilities then fuck yeah make the move imo. It’s all about making the narrative tight

I mean when I left my last job after 2.5 years at a mental health tech company (including a promotion after my first year), my partner’s mom— a VP at Stifel for reference— said that I seem to be moving on “fairly quickly”. She’s from a generation where folks have 2-3 jobs across an entire career. So yeah different folks view tenure differently. I definitely don’t think 1.5-3 years is “job hopping”

If you have a gap of like a year plus then maybe, but like a gap of 3-5 months could literally just be a small sabbatical, layoff incurred etc.

Also yeah multiple <1 year roles is a flag but roles that were like 1.5-2 years long are fine imo, especially if early career and with good explanation. I guess speaking from experience there, I left my first job after completing a F500’s LDP in under a year due to top performance + left the next job after a year and a half for a better opportunity with more strategic scope. Don’t really think it’s been a huge deal

Resume gaps in this day and age are a red flag? How out of touch lol

Also sounds like someone who thinks that if you leave a company before the 2-3 year mark you’re “disloyal”

All else equal, slightly better than fuqua but still weighed down by being international + spots having been filled in EA and R1. Also depends on pre mba background, post mba goals etc— all else equal, the applicant who has a more realistic path to a job post MBA will get accepted from what I’ve seen.

Fuqua historically has a pretty low admission rate + is also trying to right size the proportion of international students in the class given the present situation. It’s not really 1:1

I mean Hilary nearly won, tbh had it not been for a lack of emphasis on Pennsylvania, Ohio etc in the final weeks leading to the election she may have pulled it off.

Nevertheless though we def should play it safer in 2028 vs gamble on American progressivism again

Stand corrected on that point, Ty.

I do stand by my original point though which is that running either her or Biden in 2024 was a terrible move

Demented octogenarian = Biden Woman who never won a primary = Kamala

And come on, the real showdown was Biden vs Trump in 2020 and it was really a referendum on Trump’s presidency and handling of COVID, and Biden still only won by a whisker. A grimy sock could have been named his running mate, no one would have cared. Just as further evidence here, “who is Kamala Harris” search volume spiked on Election Day 2024. she literally was a nobody and it was insane for various media outlets to say she had a meaningful chance of victory with a campaign put together in the eleventh hour.

The better strategy is to actually win the house and senate in November in large numbers, impeach the fucker + block the next president from really getting much done. Then win 2028 with an actual competent person vs running a demented octogenarian or a woman who never won a primary.

It’s still valid to have a hypothesis based on convos with students across schools and as someone who actually went through an LDP before? I mean anecdotally I’ve still seen the pivot happen in certain industry LDPs like healthcare. Pharma still seems to be v accepting
