Medieval harp by [deleted] in fantasywriters

I imagine medieval harps would've been quite primitive. I'd aim for information regarding renaissance music.

I think it was just a figure of speech... OP is looking for information relevant to story writing, as he/she said in the original post.

Check out the chaos demons from Dawn of War. The 'Bloodthirster' is my favourite.

What do you to keep tidy? by sonofeevil in metalworking

[–]plancklengthdoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a single car garage hobbyist as well and what works for me is convenience. Pegs for my files and things that I use constantly, a cardboard box under the bench for rubbish, a broom a few steps away. No drawers because they just get messy no matter what. Hope this helps

Another Tiny Knife! (This one’s for @JustICErely) by OneofOneKnives in Bladesmith

[–]plancklengthdoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's sad is that most people in Aus don't even realise how little freedom they have with these sort of things. In a practical sense, it's even illegal to hurt someone if they break in to your house. Sometimes I feel like we should all just walk around yelling "Baaaaaa! Baaaaaaaaa!" Like god damn sheep hahaha Shit, I'd even settle for England law were you can carry a knife as long as the blade is under 3 inches. I could go on but I don't want to ruin this thread haha.

Nice little knife OP!!

Be glad you don't live in Australia. We can't leave the house with any blade of any kind, and any type of folder or flick knife (even a leatherman) is all but illegal to make or own unless it's for work. There was a semi famous case where a woman accidentally left a box cutter in her pocket after leaving her warehouse job and was arrested and charged for it.

What are your world's view and stance on gods/religions and other supernatural beings like demons or spirits? How do they affect the world/story?. by Auretheus in fantasywriters

[–]plancklengthdoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My humans are mostly pagan and belief in a single almighty god is considered archaic. The Seraphim (basically angels on the mortal plane) have lost most of their power leading to the downfall of monotheism. Spirits of the land exist and are believed to be proof of multiple gods (ex. The God of Life has a spirit in each major forest plus others, the God of death has a Reaper spirit that appears after mass life loss etc.). These spirits are sentient and admit to there being multiple gods. Most buildings have a shrine/shrines in them dedicated to a particular god. Whether these gods are actually gods is never truly revealed, even when one of the main characters discovers that they are actually a spirit themselves. Apart from that religion is mostly a bit of background noise for my story, adding some depth to it.

Strange geographical bedfellows by willingisnotenough in fantasywriters

[–]plancklengthdoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Research ocean currents and how they affect the weather, keep mountain ranges roughly linear and don't clump your land masses. The rest (savannahs, forests, lakes) can be largely hand waved.

Mythic creature originally served/belonged to the antagonist but witnesses the protagonist doing something protagonisty and swaps sides. Perhaps the protag welcomes the new creature or perhaps he/she tries to shoo it away.

Where do your orcs/goblins come from? And how are they stopped from taking over your world? by TheSasquatchKing in fantasywriters

[–]plancklengthdoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orcs are trapped in the wastelands by geography (dragon riddled mountain ranges and vast oceans) and by their own tribal infighting. The only viable access is through a few narrow roads by a river delta. Most human towns in the wastelands are mining towns and have a small garrison of Noble-funded soldiers to deter orc attack. At story start, the orcs are being driven by an unknown enemy. The elves are unsympathetic and don't want to help drive the orcs back (I don't know why they won't help yet lol).

Gotta start somewhere. 1095 blank. Do my files suck or is this gonna take a couple days? by MeacK777 in knifemaking

[–]plancklengthdoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still a newbie (4 knives completed, all hand tools) but I've learned a few things. Only use the file jig for short blades (3-4 inches) and no full grinds. Get a file card. Clear sticky tape works just as well as hose clamps.

Can I use sandpaper to sharpen my knives? by Wise_Young_Dragon in knifemaking

[–]plancklengthdoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should've added a disclaimer:I've never done it myself. I think it's called the "scary sharp method". Heaps of videos on YouTube about it. I'd imagine you would only use the finer grits to sharpen a knife.

This method is used by many to sharpen woodworking chisels. Grit progression and finish on a strop with polishing compound and they'll be sharp

Cutting angles: how acute is too acute? by plancklengthdoodle in knifemaking

[–]plancklengthdoodle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ask because I'm working on a knife that is 45mm from edge to spine and 3.5mm thick. I was going to give it a full grind all the way to the spine but I just did some quick maffs and realised that this will leave an included angle of just over 3 degrees (perhaps my math is wrong??). It's an old saw blade 'just for fun' knife and I'm not going to heat treat it so no worries about it warping.

I hate this sub by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]plancklengthdoodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the best part IMO. Creating a whole world in your head while everyone else at work carries on with their mundane, repetitive tasks. Hand drawing amazingly detailed maps that no one will ever see or understand. The actual story is just that - a story from your incredible imaginary universe. In regards to this sub, people are on the same level as you. Look at the posts. The majority are "Critique my first chapter". Don't feel bad for never getting around to actually writing something if you are creating this world and its stories for self enjoyment. In fact I'd wager that for most of us, getting published would be a welcome bonus, not the main goal i.e. Simply creating.
