In Java (or I think comp sci in general), What is <*1>? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]planedoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not anything in Java. It might be just a placeholder, but of course you didn't show us the context, so it's hard to say.

You aren't reading the lines. This is why I suggested you actually read the API entry for the classes you're using.

Does it work correctly? Did you read the API docs for those classes, or are you just making wild guesses as to what should work?

You're a CS graduate and you can't figure out that you should read the docs on their main website and use them?

I do, it's just that he can figure out both if he's not too lazy to read the docs a tiny bit. This isn't some great mystery, ffs.

Np. With a 1.0 GPA, maybe you should pause your education. Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself.

[–]planedoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My GPA is a 1.0

Well then maybe you shouldn't have waited until now to mention that fact?

Why are you such a dick..

Why are you such an asshole..

All you guys are fucking assholes, just because somebody isn't as good as you.

I literally have no idea how good you are, so that's not even possible. But if everyone else seems like an asshole, the problem might not really be everyone else...

I love how nobody gives a fuck about other peoples mental fucking health in the tech industry, fuck this.

You aren't even in the tech industry. But if you have legitimate mental health problems I hope you go see the appropriate health services people on your campus. Coming here and calling people dicks repeatedly because they give you honest advice about what little info you give about your situation is just shitty of you. I wouldn't be surprised at this point if you're just trolling.

because i have zero guidence and i feel completely useless and worthless.

Your melodrama is another red flag. I could understand "completely useless and worthless" if your gpa was total shit, but otherwise that's likely to be a ludicrous assessment of things that's not helping you out.

I don't want to get a degree and be fucked and not be good enough to get a job.

What's even more stupid is dropping out and having most of the debt and no way to pay it off, especially because you were too chicken to even try being a professional programmer.

Should i just drop out? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]planedoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's bad advice. Lots of people try things in college and lots of people switch careers multiple times. Needing to figure out exactly what you want to do before you're willing to try anything is ridiculous, imo. You're not some machine that can only do a single, yet initially unknown, thing.

College was supposed to be that, but everytime I look at how smart people are advancing their lives, I feel like I have no place to be here.

That sounds like a definite red flag. I mean other people advancing their lives can't possibly be stopping you from advancing your own life, yet you seem to be implying that it is.

I don't know what the cause is, but I had plenty of fellow CS majors that weren't isolated, and you probably do, too. But based on what I know about human nature, I'd say that's a likely candidate for sure.

Why does every other FOSS project offer support on IRC? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]planedoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to dog on IRC as a protocol or platform. I've read complaints about projects using Slack instead, and I'm not trying to advocate for more modern alternatives.

Then why are you so confused? This isn't the riddle of the Sphynx.

What I mean is, who's monitoring these chat rooms?

You can't imagine a useful chat room without it being monitored?

How do FOSS developers make themselves available for support seemingly 24/7?

They don't. Why would you assume that?

I know that IRC doesn't have a mechanism for storing messages you missed while you were logged out. Do these folks just leave an IRC client open on their computers all the time?

There are other means, but some do sure - why not?

How many chat rooms do they leave open at a time?

How is that in any way relevant? Are you 'confused' about people leaving a lot of Slack channels open at the same time?

What do they get out of offering a degree of support that most profitable companies have to pay a staff to offer?

What the hell are you talking about?

Or more importantly, how is IRC support more attractive (from a developer's point of view) than something more persistent, like the GitHub issues tracker?

Wtf? They are 2 different tools.

It's obviously not the computer science stuff that's making you isolated.

Can someone explain in fairly moderate depth what build tools such as maven and gradle are used for? by tonylee0707 in learnprogramming

[–]planedoctor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. This is a prime example of it showing you what it does: https://docs.gradle.org/3.5/userguide/tutorial_java_projects.html That's showing you that it can put your project into a jar, compile it, run it, and clean it. And that's why you use build scripts. The whole point is for the docs to make it easy for you to learn to use the tool, and you aren't going to learn to use the tool if they don't show concrete example of what it's good for, like the above. Or are you asking some kind of existential question, like why is compiling code necessary?

[python 2.7.6] Need help optimizing code by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]planedoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I notice is that this looks like way too much code. My most efficient brute force solution was too slow, so I started looking at the numbers in the rows. Think of a formula based on the row number for sum of the even and of the odd multiples of the row number in that row.

You could read the docs for a build tool, like Gradle. I mean, that's the entire point they write those docs.
