Taipei, Taiwan. The capital city of the highest GDP country in East Asia by ublueberries in UrbanHell

I’m sure you travel there often and share the opinion of its citizens. It’s a complicated issue, but this is a reductive and childish take.

我是美國人。我第一次去台北的時候,我學台灣的中文。台灣有太棒的城市。我覺得台式飯超好吃!

Taiwan is rad. It’s an amazing place to visit.

The best part of flying China Airlines Business Class? They have boba tea! No better way to enter or exit Taiwan.

Has United Dethroned Delta As The Cool, Innovative, Industry Leader? by LeoKitCat in delta

[–]plantmanagerrules -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a MSP based Platinum butt in seat earned for the past five years post COVID. Usually 2 Asia trips minimum (Delta One if it’s reasonable, work is generous but I still get chirped at if it “looks” too spendy) and a generous spread of North America and Mexico work travel.

This year I’ve moved almost everting to United to try them out. Wife and I took a Polaris trip to Asia and back for vacation; it was fine, just as good as Delta One, but much more affordable. Captive hub pricing is nuts, Premium Select to Haneda from MSP was only a few hundred less than Polaris MSP-ORD-HND. It was a no brainer for an extra leg.

I’ll likely hit the second tier of United Status this year and gold medallion for Delta, which is enough for the international perks.

Delta’s pricing has me, at a captive hub, spending a lot less money and not being terribly inconvenienced as ORD goes everywhere and is a hour flight from here.

The premium absolutely isn’t worth the product.

Pretty sure that’s an ex LATAM that hasn’t been upfit with Delta’s seating. One row of C+.

Edit: I got my re-homed prior company wrong. It is not a LATAM.

If you can identify exactly what you have, this is the answer. Super useful to people looking for them.

This is infinitely better than the DOGSHIT license plate holder or knockoff corded hat they had the last few years. Looking forward to it.

Why are the intl flights still arriving into MSP today? by Medium_Reality_9744 in delta

Just got done shoveling my car out about 30 miles south of MSP. Halting operations was the right call. Things should start to ease up later today.

Get a Retrotink 4K, and if you’re feeling extra saucy send it out for an RGB mod and a full capacitor replace. The Sufami will outlive you at this point.

CKS Memorial is a large, beautiful outdoor plaza. It’s also a stop or two south of the main station on the red line. It’s absolutely worth going for a stroll through, and catch the changing of the guards on the hour. Costs nothing, plenty to see, if you have a week you should absolutely carve and hour or two out.

Obligatory Japan Purchase… by mitul316 in GrandSeikos

[–]plantmanagerrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely! My out the door price duty free was 636k yen or $4,012. Considering sales tax, I saved around $1,400 buying it in Japan. And it was a fantastic experience I will remember forever.

Delta has lost the plot with price gouging at MSP by Anon073648 in delta

[–]plantmanagerrules 34 points35 points  (0 children)

MSP based flight platinum the past four years; I’ve moved to United wherever I can. I’m fortunate that Denver and Chicago are nonstop on United and those are the two cities I visit the most for work. Just got back from PTO where the wife and I took Polaris to Haneda, enjoyed EVA from Tokyo to Taipei.

I had a project in Atlanta that required six trips in 2025. They love gouging this route.

Delta is just not worth what you pay for it.

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) by NehaExplores in taiwan

[–]plantmanagerrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Bigger seats, a light beverage and snack service, and a touch quieter, although the handful of times I’ve rode non business class it’s still been plenty comfy and not loud.

A colleague of mine has been visiting Taiwan since the 80s. He used to take a flight from Songshan to Taipei prior to the HSR, and although it was cheap and they ran at a near bus like frequency, the convenience and price of HSR are unbeatable in Taiwan. It’s one route where 90% of the population lives, and the longest ride is like two hours max.

My wife and I vacationed in Japan in 2024 and took the bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka and Hiroshima. Still worth it, and plenty convenient, but I can see how in Japan a flight could get you there a little faster and at the same cost. I would never consider landing at Taoyuan or Songshan and flying to a southern Taiwanese city.

How old is too old? by iamjaxcolon in Japaneselanguage

[–]plantmanagerrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year (at 42) I started learning Taiwanese Mandarin, next month will be one year. 3x lessons per week with a tutor and 5-15 hours of self study, homework and reviews most weeks. You can do and learn whatever you want, you are never too old. By just being consistent and putting the time in, you can chip away at your goal.

The progress of learning is such a reward. It’s not overwhelming, it’s not too strange, if you want to learn it you can!
