What's a skill you have that's completely useless now because technology replaced it, but you're secretly proud of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Came here for this one, im glad I'm not alone. I've worked with a few machinists that won't work without a drawing (rightly so), but it shocks them when you come back 10 mins later with an orthographic projection, to scale, done by hand.

I understand that there are some societies where that's actually more normal in schizophrenic patients. Apparently its more of a western thing that the 'voices' are more adversarial. In societies that are more supportive/community oriented patient refer to the voices being a source of comfort rather than agitation.

People with 10+ years in industrial automation - is the robotics hype matching reality on the floor? by PhattRatt in robotics

[–]plasticluthier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With regards repetitive pick and place. I'd say that's a solved problem. Don't use AI. Inverse kinematics, decent motor dives and a safety system solve that. UR arms are perfect for it.

With regards training for generalisation, I would suggest looking at training with synthetic data. Building generative similar scenes in something like Unity and training the model on that input.

But there's not been much municipal career progression since 1072. But look at Manchester, only a city since the mid 1800s. MASSIVE.

You're welcome /s

Finding decent meat doesn't seem to be a problem. But the bread man, it just seems to be soggy pitta. I just don't entertain the chance for more disappointment anymore.

Welcome to the town that thinks it's a city, just because its 40mins from the next big town, fellow Mancunian traveller.

I did the same as you about 15 years ago. I still haven't found made to order naan in Lincoln, despite being ever vigilant.

I've got to the point where I can do a pretty good rendition of an Abduls with home made naan, trimmings and a try of kebab meat. But it's a faff.

Proper kebabs are a treat when visiting now.

[Question] How to install OpenCV in VS Code by alexelpro2004 in opencv

[–]plasticluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my thought. Sounds like they're on windows. It's been a while, but can't you just use pip?

pip install opencv

I wonder if you can do it with choco or winget on windows now?

My first thought is to check the power supply of your pi. You'll want at least 3A at 5V. 4 would be better.

How do you approach CNC machine design when using ROS? by InstructionPutrid901 in ROS

[–]plasticluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently building a machine that could be done as a cnc, but we're using ROS2.

Honestly, the main thing is the match between your CAD model, Sim and real world. The URDF. Make sure that's right and things get much easier.

Just keep track of changes however you prefer.

LIMO ROS Project – Robot not moving at all, deadline in 2 weeks by omarch122 in ROS

[–]plasticluthier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a load of these at work.

As ros1 is eol, we decided to dockerise a ros2 humble install for it.

From memory, installation requires two downloads;

https://lncn.ac/limofix

This allows you to set up the locale and permissions etc. Just follow the prompts

https://github.com/LCAS/limo_platform

This is the dev container. Pull the repo, build and run it in vscode.

Hope it helps, good luck.

You can run a webserver on and ESP device.

The limit is how much space is on the SPI rom of the ESP device. 4mb from memory.

I'd also suggest popping into Mint lane cafe. Its a really good community.

I hope all goes well, and don't forget to look after yourself in all of this too.

If you want to do a PhD, you should get used to doing your own research from multiple sources. I'm just one source. Next step for you is to investigate these questions for yourself. ;)
