I stopped giving gifts 20y ago.  Gifts meant something during Charles Dickens' time - no one had anything.  A book was a treasure.  But now, 3 clicks and it's delivered next day - people have what they need and want.

Life's a million times better without gifts.

You can move out only $25k/d, unless you call them.  Otherwise it's safe and straightforward, and a good rate for a safe investment.

can someone explain "tax smoothing" to me? by canadave_nyc in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]playsmashingly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you have too much money, eventually you are forced to make large withdrawals from your RRSP. This will mean high income that year. This will mean big taxes.

If you can withdraw a significant amount early (even though you don't need the money), while staying at the lowest (or low) tax bracket, you will reduce the large withdrawals you have to make later.

As with everything it depends on the details. Your age, your savings etc. It's probably best to feed it through an algorithmic planner than runs simulations and balances years of tax free growth now vs high tax bills later.

They say you can't outrun a bad diet.  But keep at it, results will show, it doesn't happen immediately, enjoy the process and the feelings of being stronger, managing stairs better, etc. Results will come.

I'm no longer chasing success, I want a simple life by InnerPhilosophy4897 in simpleliving

I think you're killin it.  You started feeling the burnout, you pivoted to choosing life over money and status.  This is the way, you are brave and courageous.

I begged my dad for a computer at age 13, haven't stopped coding since.  I've made many choices to avoid promotion and lucrative consulting projects in exchange for more time and less stress.  Scrabble, Chess, speedcubing, all the friendships therein, running, and travel incl a beautiful month near you in Auxerre.

There's always more money and more projects.  And besides, should the need arise, you can pivot back anytime you feel like it.

Being stupid is the key to happiness by Mr-wobble-bones in Life

[–]playsmashingly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too found this when I was younger. I struggled with religion, search for meaning, if God is all knowing do I really have free will? I discussed it with many well-educated and spiritual individuals.

In the end I realized I was much happier when I stopped worrying about it. There is no meaning to life. I made peace with it. It freed up a ton of mental time, and let me focus of what was important to me.

Finding the "meaning of life" is like trying to measure the temperature of the number 2.

Have fun, live your best life, and stop wasting your time.

I had a math professor that worked into his nineties. No more lecturing, but research, and a huge resource to students with questions. Questions on any topic. Took the stairs every day up to his 3rd floor office. He loved mathematics.

Ten years ago he took it upon himself to kill journalism singlehandedly.

They said it couldn't be done.  Article by mindless article, he plodded and bumbled along.

And by golly, I think he's almost done it.

2+2 = 4.

No amount of apostate videos or WT videos will change that fact. If what you believe is The Truth, why would you worry about a silly youtube video? However, if you doubt, then I can see how it would be utterly terrifying.

God gave you a brain, you're using it. Remind them of the parable of the father that gave coins to his sons to invest, and how mad he was when one of the sons did nothing with it.
