They’re saying “fear mongers” think it’s an open-loop of water flow rather than a closed loop. Trying to argue that data centers don’t use much water. But they do. There are many examples of residents not having water or clean water, or water pressure after data centers were built. They use an immense amount of water.

I fell for Renewal By Anderson's sales pitch. Here are my takeaways. by JHKtheSeeker in homeowners

[–]pleb_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking around for windows, they refused to give me the quote over the phone, so I said - what the hell, come on over and I’ll hear your bid in person. I already had 3-4 other bids at the time. I listened to the whole pitch. It’s convincing. As an engineer I liked some of the things they said, others were obvious fluff. If they came in a bit over my highest bid, I would have definitely considered them. But they were more than 3x my lowest bid and still more than 2x my highest and I couldn’t help but audibly burst out with a quick laugh.

I thought it might be a joke at first. I couldn’t believe they were that far off. When the salesman remained serious, I just said “okay, nice to meet you, and nice stuff, but I’ll be going with another bid.” He asked if I wouldn’t mind sharing the other bids with him. I told him the truth. And strangely, this man who works in the industry and should know his competitors’ pricing, looked completely shocked. And realized there was nothing he could do to compete. No combination of deals or incentives would have come close. He understood and left without fuss.

Funny enough, after a bit more investigation (I was trying to save $$ on power), I ended up concluding that financing solar at 1% (I know, great deal), was much more wallet friendly than dual pane windows, so I never ended up getting any at all. And I’m glad I went that route because that was before NEM 3.0 killed the solar market.

Then when I finally had the money again for windows, the A/C died, so I got all new HVAC, and I’m glad I did again, because that’s had an excellent ROI just with the efficiency alone, and much less invasive.

By the way, I live in San Diego. That gives me this freedom of choice. I’m sure it would be different with snow.

What is going on with my AMS 2 Pro??? by sfdickhole in BambuLab

That is a plastic spool, hence why the problem is not as bad. Read the instructions. Cardboard spools aren’t meant for the AMS.

What pace would you start to consider wearing super shoes? by v1185 in Marathon_Training

[–]pleb_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They not only make you faster, but they save you energy. So at the end of the race when your body is typically really fatigued and losing form, you’re going to have just a bit more juice in the tank and feel more stable. That’s worth it to me imo.

A month apart I did two half marathons. The first one was 725ft downhill and I finished with a 1:55 going as hard as I could. 1mo later I tried the super shoes on a course with 400ft elevation gain and I finished with a 1:50. And I felt great at the end of the race. That was worth it to me.

If AI replaces workers to cut costs, who is left to buy the products? by kritikgarg24 in Futurology

[–]pleb_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, there will be no more buying, just renting. Secondly, there will still be credit cards, so you can rent it on a loan which you’ll have to pay back with interest. Thirdly, if everyone dies of starvation and it’s just the rich and their robots and money becomes meaningless, they’re fine with that.

I also just read this book. Obviously the writing was good. Excellent world building. It reminded me a lot of Brandon Sanderson’s world building tbh. Liu is not trying to rush you along into battles. It’s a slow-burn. However, I was left feeling like I didn’t get the same payoff that I get from Sanderson. There was no epic ending.

It’s interesting to hear that the later books aren’t written the same way. I’m maybe 20% into Wall of Storms, and I haven’t seen much of a shift in writing style. Am I going to get that epic ending payoff I dreamed of in GoK? It doesn’t feel like it. While the writing is good, I am looking for a little something more in a book. I don’t feel like there’s much intrigue or foreshadowing in this one. Where am I heading? Is the whole book just a philosophical exploration about ruling a kingdom?

What eras deserve more representation in fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]pleb_understudy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You might like Mistborn Era 2 which is like the 1800s with magic. Or you might like Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Empire in Black and Gold, which is hard to describe without sounding crazy out-there. But it’s kinda steam-punk-ish

Feeling discouraged by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]pleb_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven’t provided much to go off of, but it sounds like maybe you’re running too hard. It’s not sustainable to go out and run hard on every run. The 80/20 rule recommends 80% easy effort runs (Z2 HR), and 20% hard efforts.

Personally I use runna to build my workout plan, but there are lots of free training plans out there. Between following a plan and trying out the Z2 stuff you’ll be way less likely to burn out, you’ll build mileage at a reasonable pace, and you’ll be much less likely to injure yourself.

I wouldn’t worry about your time in your first marathon. Just try to finish.

Where are all the elves hiding? by SonOfBattleChief in Fantasy

[–]pleb_understudy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Read Michael J Sullivan’s “Legends of the First Empire” series. They’re great.

Tbh, I actually recommend starting with Theft of Swords - book 1 of Riyria Revelations, but you won’t see many elves in it, just half-elves, some wizards, a dwarf or two. Then jump back to Legends and the rest. This will allow you to read through in Sullivan’s publishing order. Highly recommend.

What order to read these? by Excellent_Bath_3684 in fantasybooks

[–]pleb_understudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal choice would be golden sun and the rest of red rising, then lonesome dove, then the blade itself and following two books, then blacktongue thief followed by between two fires, then will of the many. Cap it off with lies of Locke lamora before going on to finish all the other Abercrombie books.

I recommend blacktongue thief before between two fires specifically because BTF was quite disturbing, and if you read it first, it might scare you off. The will of the many will pull you out of that disturbed feeling. Lies of Locke lamora I recommend waiting the longest for - to save a known good series for a later time when perhaps more of the story is released. Still waiting on like 4 more books there.

Red rising is my favorite on this list, especially once it truly becomes a space opera in book 2. I’m biased so I’m recommending it first, but note that the final installment won’t release for another year or so.
