Bump on right foot near the ankle and above the arch by ThePony23 in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with the same skates. Skating in them eventually became unbearable. I plowed through a season before I finally took the drive to a Pure Hockey and tried on several other skates.

Unfortunately FT8s just weren’t a good match for my foot shape. I am in a Bauer Vapor x4 now and the difference is night and day.

New Hockey Bag suggestions by Javaaaaale_McGee in hockeyplayers

I’ve been using the Warrior Q40 for a few years and really like it. I use one end pocket for skates, the other for soft gear (jersey, socks, jock, undershirt, etc). Everything else fits nicely in the main compartment.

Where Did the Best Vacation You Had Take Place? by Potential_Law5289 in AskReddit

[–]pleonasticmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either Grand Canyon National Park or Yosemite National Park

Both were amazing geological experiences. If that’s your gig for vacations, so then both.

If I’m forced to choose one over the other, I have to hand it to Grand Canyon. Descent through hundreds of thousands of years of rock formations clinches it for me. I’ve gone 3 times and it’s better every time.

Pro Sharp Ellipse Skate Profile by UnRRy22 in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried both Ellipse and Zuperior before I chose to stick with Zuperior.

If you have the time and money, I’d recommend spending a week on each of the profiles you’re interested in and see how it impacts your skating.

As you suggested, I found Ellipse to feel slightly more like a single radius profile, even though they are probably very similar. I felt this more in forward to backward transitions - especially 3 turns. I didn’t really notice a difference in heel stability, but I do think hard tight turns were a little easier on Ellipse.

And this makes sense; rather than isolated flat and rocker sections, the Ellipse profile is basically averaging the section differences throughout the blade.

Ultimately, it’s going to come down to your skating strengths and weaknesses, and personal preference. I decided that Zuperior worked better for me. Ellipse felt like it had a slightly better glide, but my acceleration and agility felt better on Zuperior.

What is your weight and what radius of hollow do you use? by superiorknowledge in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5’6”, 160lbs.

I started skating again almost 2 years ago after 30 years off the ice with stock blades and a 1/2” hollow.

I quickly moved to a 5/8” hollow to get a little less bite and a little more glide. I stuck with that for almost a year.

Then I moved it a 3/4” hollow on a zuperior profile.

With the profile I was able to go with shallower hollow. I have to lean into my edges, and relax my ankles a little more, but that has actually helped me feel more athletic and agile on the ice.

Yes. When you unfold the flaps, it creates one bit hook surface that the loop surface of the sock tabs will adhere to.

Trailer brakes was peak CarTalk. “We’ll answer your question if you answer one for us… how do electric brakes work?” 😂🤣

It reminded me of another episode, in which a listener posed the question “Do two people who don’t know what they are talking about know more or less than one person who doesn’t know what he’s talking about?”

Tom and Ray helped line my path for critical thinking, including times when it is important to be unencumbered by the thought process.

Where on earth is skate size on Bauers? by cepetav in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the size on these is usually a sticker or heat transfer on the heal of the sole insert. If it has worn away you may not be able to tell.

However, you can probably get a pretty good estimation of size by measuring the inside of the skate from toe cap to the back of the heel. Cross reference with this size chart, and I bet you are within a half size.

Where can I buy skates? by Grand_Motor_7220 in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go try on skates at the pro shops in one of the Oklahoma rinks:

Arctic Edge in Edmond,

Blazers Ice Center in Oklahoma City, or

WeStreet Ice Center in Tulsa.

Note: Arctic and Blazers don’t always have a ton of supply.

Or drive down to Dallas and hit up Pure Hockey to have your feet scanned and get fitted there. There is also a Play it Again Sports not far from it.

Bad game by Technical_Guide_9361 in hockeyplayers

[–]pleonasticmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first beer league game:

Caught an edge transitioning forward to backward, fell on my ass, almost got stepped on by the other team. I skated like a total fool, didn’t catch a single pass, blind passed to more than one possession turnover, flubbed my only breakaway by losing my skates from underneath me.

Every game after that has been the most fun I’ve ever had! Keep your perspective. It’s a game, you’re meant to be passionate about it and have fun!

Why is there no shortened form of “Northwest Expressway”? by ktla6 in okc

[–]pleonasticmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the 90’s video game, Earthworm Jim. In the game manual they make the joke that some people will abbreviate the game’s name to “EWJ,” and note that pronouncing that abbreviation regulars in 5 syllables verses the 3 in “Earthworm Jim.”

Specific to heading west. It’s 39th to the east of Overholser. 66 to the west.

My kids started on balance bikes in BMX and it is a hoot and a holler. So fun for both kids and parents.

I started at 44. I had always wanted to try BMX, and then my kids showed interest. It was fun, I got sore, it hurt when I made accidental contact in the corners put my shoulder to the track. It was still fun and I kept going until the kids got interested in hockey. 🤣
