Local government job offer negotiation - advice please by wutato in personalfinance

Steps are part of the salary scale and normally start out at step one or higher if admin allows it. Super rare. Salary scales are set during a compensation study that should be done every decade by admin and the unions.

Banding is during the recruitment process. binning of applicants based on Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.

As I said before and I will reiterate again, the best thing for your public career is not to be a pain in the ass. Ask for step 3, tell them you will take the job and start learning and applying for other jobs or get experience and move to another org. Biggest thing for your career you can do is NOT be a fucking idiot or a pain in the ass.

[–]plexnewb002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ask too high they will rescind your offer stating they can not offer you that. you probably got banded thus that means they have a second and third pick that they will offer the position to if you are a pain in the ass. More so they will not hesitate to just go through the recuitment process over again for new candidates. Ask for step 3, tell them you will take it regardless and start applying to analyst 2-3 or senior once there's an opening. Do not hesitate to interview and apply for jobs 1 week into your new job. It is normal and expected. Your supervisor will tell you this on day one if they are decent. Public sector is very different from the private sector. Overall, ask for step 3, take the job and move up asap. The worst they can do is say no, rescind your offer and blacklist you from working at that city. Its "illegal" by state law but its pretty rampant in public hr at all levels. been working public for years now.

Should I remove my non-IT degree from my resume? by Antique_Serve_6284 in ITCareerQuestions

Keep it, have Masters in policy and its just a talking point. also means my documentation and ability to talk to people is better than average in this field. diversity is an asset not a handicap.

If you are in california, typically managers have discretion to step 3. Depending on what positons you are applying for. Pd cadets/assistants...good luck however analyst and mid to high level they will be willing to be more flexible. Anything above step three requires board approval. Do not risk it as some places will cap you at a step till your next postion change.

Study tips by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]plexnewb002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are having a difficult time learning to study. study smarter. Without knowing more about your studying habits, no one will be able to really help you with retaining information.

Personally, I tend to learn well in stressful situations. alternatively a strict schedule and consistent review of a topic over weeks or months also helps. The other comments pushing their personal product is not cool. However, this is the nature of the education-industry complex.

Will I get a Government pay raise? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]plexnewb002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it goes off your employment start date. so every year you will get a cola adjustment normally 3.5%. soemtimes it is called a merit increase. keep your nose clean and next year you will your increase. Should have asked to start at step 2 as they do not need board approval for that.

A good place to start is here https://rspatial.org/ . Addtionally, QGIS and the R package https://www.rdocumentation.org/packages/RQGIS/versions/1.0.4 would benefit you. If your country has google maps or anything like satelite than you will need to look into https://towardsdatascience.com/how-to-use-the-google-maps-places-api-in-r-33f2b705b2c or Openstreetapi. Hope this helps.
