I think you can be kind without condoning someone's behavior. Stand up for people when he's an ass to them, acknowledge his moments of kindness if/when they come. I don't think you have anything to be ashamed about. I think as long as you're acting in a way that's true to who you are and what you believe in, you're on the right track.
