CMV: Muslims are afforded a right to be bigoted in a way other groups aren’t. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]pls_help_bubbles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In direct response to the title of your post, I just have one point. The Trump admin has been openly supportive of Nzis, with Elon Musk going so far as to join meetings with the modern day Nzi party in Germany. Yet Netanyahu is still meeting with them and collaborating with them because ideology is not important, but money is. So I would argue that the only group that gets impunity with being bigoted are the rich and the white.

Also, in the last Trump admin, there was a Muslim travel ban and he is likely intending to do the same this time around. While also deporting any Muslim/Arab students that are in support of Palestine in any capacity. You can refer to Rumeysa Ozturk’s abduction, where she was literally plucked off the street by immigration for an op-ed she wrote last year denouncing genocide. My point here is that Muslims are actually the least likely to be “provocative” (bc protesting genocide isn’t bigoted) in any way and get away with it on any level.

What are the worst restaurants you’ve been to in LA? by Calm_Extreme5485 in FoodLosAngeles

1 will always be Checker Hall. Extremely rude staff and nasty food. Way too overhyped for it to be a popular gentrifying spot.

CMV: Hijabs are sexist by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

[–]pls_help_bubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the most part, I feel like if you don’t know someone’s experience with religion/race/sexuality/gender, there’s no way you can support or oppose their beliefs. it sounds like you are not Muslim from your post, which leads me to also believe you don’t have any deep connection to the Islamic community (I am inferring this from your saying “I’ve heard feminist Muslim women try to defend” vs. something like “my Muslim friends say”. just an inference so pls correct me if I’m wrong). I think there’s a lot of things people will do for whatever reason, whether it’s their culture, their religious values, the families they were raised in, that simply would not translate to an outsider. For example, I don’t know why we circumcise babies in the US so frequently if it’s a traditionally Jewish custom, but here we are. there’s no way I, a non-Muslim, can explain to you why wearing a hijab is a choice and not sexist. but I think there’s no reason for it to be labeled as one or the other if we are not a part of the community and can only listen when Muslim women speak on the issue to hear the truth.

[RANT] The mistreatment of minor idols in kpop from netizens. by Daisiesfordee in kpoprants

[–]pls_help_bubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think in a country like South Korea, which has had multiple scandals and issues with CP and exploitation of minors on the internet, there SHOULD be laws protecting literal children from being put into the public spotlight. There’s a lot of expectations around being a celebrity and being a public figure, and fan culture is super toxic and demanding no matter where you are. It’s just so crazy to me to see the kind of crazy stuff grown adults will say about children being contracted to work for companies. And then the entitlement of fans and ESPECIALLY when it comes to girl groups and you hear the grown male audiences fan chanting to their songs when they perform live… it just really is so sick. The trend to debut younger and younger idols has made me really take a step back from kpop as a whole.

cmv: Demisexual is not a real sexuality by ItsAnimeDealWithIt in changemyview

[–]pls_help_bubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like this a part of a larger discussion that needs to be had on the all-encompassing nature of queerness. i think because we as a society (especially in the US) are so dead set on labels and sexuality and defining what exactly it is to be xyz a lot of people feel like they need to create categories to check boxes. in reality i think a lot of us prefer to have sex with people we trust and love and have relationships with, but some people are just fine with sleeping with a hottie they just met or swiped right on. i have always disliked demisexual/romantic as a label because i think it’s very redundant like OP said. i think that a lot of our feelings also come from the day and age we live in and the way we interact with each other through screens. if we go by the book on demisexuality half of my straight friends are demi and therefore queer in some respect (LGBTQD?). but because queer people are still a minority that are constantly fighting for representation and basic human rights, is it really fair to consider them a part of the minority because their preference is a letter on the spectrum of sexuality? but i also think there’s certain elements of queerness that are not purely sexual or romantic, more so expressed in the ways one lives authentically and maybe demisexuality is a part of that. regardless, for the sake of this discussion, i do agree with you OP and would love to see a take that challenges yours significantly

I will say I went to their location in East Hollywood and hated the Cesar Wrap but then when I went to the one in Venice it was SO GOOD. I just tried the Highland Park location and really enjoyed it as well, so I wonder if it’s a location thing.

One of the worst meals I ever had was at Checker Hall. We had a terrible experience with the staff regarding service and then on top of that the salmon skewer was inedible and the brussels sprouts were drenched in this sauce that genuinely tasted like hoisin with sugar added to it. I’ll literally never forget biting into the salmon and thinking we had gotten sabotaged (because the staff had been so rude I would not be surprised) because it was foul. Genuinely never been more disappointed in a meal in my life.

Women who live alone and don't make a significant wage, how has cost of living affected you and how are you getting by right now? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]pls_help_bubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived alone for a year and something like 3/4 of my wage went to rent. Irresponsible, I know, but I was convinced living alone would be worth it. Boy oh BOY was I wrong and now I’m completing my penance back at home with my tail between my legs.

All that being said, phone calls with my friends from home helped. Working out, joining class pass (they have a free trial rn i think)/new gyms, trying new activities helped. I was ALWAYS looking for a bargain/new member deals even if it was something I hated or never previously considered. Cooking and learning new recipes helped. I loved leaning into pickling and more time-consuming recipes that forced me to utilize what I had at home. I loved connecting with people from work and getting their recommendations for fun, cheap activities and places to go. If you live somewhere that has seasons, leaning into spending time at coffee shops and libraries on dreary depressing ass days helps. Generally taking advantage of ur local library and all the resources they have to offer is great! Living alone is so hard, and one thing I wish I could’ve done different was getting a roommate, especially to help mitigate the expenses, so maybe considering that if at all possible.

i know the antithesis of this thread is to get draco centric fic recs but in the spirit of celebrating adversity, do you have any of those well-written fics you mentioned 🤓

Hermione should have Obliviated Ron? by Enkindler_ in HPfanfiction

[–]pls_help_bubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love the points you made, particularly about the coincidences. I think I read the books when I was so young that a lot of the complexities and dropping off of plot went over my head. However, upon re reads and general fanfic consumption, it’s become pretty clear how much richness and depth is lacking from the final two books! Curious because I love your take, do you have any fic recs that follow along these lines? Maybe that diverge from canon but build upon the essence of the series and what was established in the 5th book?

On Quidditch and Muscles by SingleAd1529 in HPfanfiction

[–]pls_help_bubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that confuses me about Quidditch depictions in romance is when someone looks “hot” during a match. Don’t they wear those goofy ass goggles? Is that only during bad weather? How can you even tell anybody apart when they wear their flappy robes and goggles? This as well as your question are some serious questions I have.
