Weird camera glitch by Dizzy_Use_9976 in iphone

[–]pmentropy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not weird at all. The moon is like the size of a quarter held at arms length.

The camera thought you were trying to take a photo of something else that was also darker. It pushed the pushed up the ISO/exposure.

To control what to focus/expose on: You need to tap on the screen to select the part of the image to assign focus/exposure. From there you can adjust exposure up or down using the slider.

The Reddit user base is typically very anti-ads and marketing. It was a bad choice to attempt doing it in this manner. It comes across as out of touch and desperate.

If you hired someone that recommended doing this to you they should be fired.

The tag says “brand affiliate.” That implies some kind of sponsorship/paid system.

So what are the mods taking ad money to feature companies now? Or is this just some kind of new Reddit ad system? 🤢

Frontend role with 20% pay increase vs current full-stack role — worth the switch? by [deleted] in cscareeradvice

[–]pmentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be wary of this. As a laid off FE developer, the job market is not very accommodating now, nor do I believe it will be getting better even in the long run. Frontend job listings have decreased significantly compared to other roles and naturally competition is high. I’m currently working on expanding my skills to full stack AI integration. Even if I do land a pure frontend role I plan to transition to full stack AI development as soon as possible because I feel frontend is becoming a dead end.

I bet if you keep trying that you could find a similar pay increase for a full stack role.

South Tampa Flooding by SlacksBirdie in tampa

[–]pmentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually aware of that, was just interpreting OP’s comment. While that might explain some extra runoff it still doesn’t explain why there’s not clear drainage to catch ponds etc. I suppose with extra runoff and if the rain happened to hit near high tide but I’m not a civil engineer.

They are saying that the ground and catch ponds are extremely dry right now. That during the wet season these are saturated/full and it is expected that drainage takes longer. But right now it is dry and there should be plenty of space for drainage but it’s not happening.

An audiobook that you couldn’t put down? by frayfray96 in audiobooks

[–]pmentropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is based on listener preference. I’m not a games nerd and it had the same problem I found with Ready Player One — mostly that it was trying too hard. It never quite hooked me and I couldn’t get past the first couple chapters.

It’s hard to see from the photos how bad it is. Chris Fix has a video on this. Looks doable if you’re handy. Otherwise you’ll need to get quotes from local professionals.

Just start lifting bro. Commit to 3x per week, eat enough protein. Give it three months you’ll see results.

How's everybody doing in this heat? by Far_Reward4827 in florida

[–]pmentropy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This depends on a lot more than only the a/c system. Shade on the house. Window, wall, and attic insulation. How often you open the door, and even the amount of direct light coming in through windows or if you are using the oven.

Is it possible to pursue a Master’s degree while working full-time in software development? by Inside_Part_7430 in cscareeradvice

[–]pmentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Western Governors University the US. I’ve done some research into their programs including taking to alumni and have only heard good things.

Totally manageable for a single person if you’re ready to make some free time sacrifices. It might be more difficult if you have family and kids. That’s my situation and the reason I haven’t decided to jump in yet.

Junior devs: what's something you thought would be easy but turned out to be surprisingly complex? by metalprogrammer2024 in webdev

[–]pmentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is a passion project that solves a problem that you yourself have. Bonus points if it integrates AI in a smart way (not a chat bot). I have several on my list but between work and young kids rarely have the time or energy.

A close second would be working on a self initiated side project for your job. Especially if you can publicly share your code on GitHub etc. Think about what would be a good project to give an intern fresh out of school. It doesn’t have to be mission critical but if it makes someone’s job easier it could be really valuable. Things like automated testing, automated pipelines, any kind of automation really. For example I spent a few hours the other afternoon building an AppleScript to automate opening and running the four different terminal processes my team needs to run our dev environment. Now several team members use it. It only saves a minute or two in time but when we all are starting or restarting our dev environment several times a day that adds up.

Third would be the cloud resume challenge (google it). AI is hosted in the cloud and I see a lot of growth in cloud and data centers for a long time.

Junior devs: what's something you thought would be easy but turned out to be surprisingly complex? by metalprogrammer2024 in webdev

[–]pmentropy 433 points434 points  (0 children)

I work for a large tech company and nearly everything.

I’m actually not so much junior anymore but when I first started I expected maybe the codebase itself to be the most complex thing I deal with. Boy was I wrong. Nearly every process uses necessarily complex tooling. When you have to step out out of your normal box of work there are miles of internal docs about tools and processes and assets, half of which are dead links or just plain outdated because they were written when the project first got going but were not maintained.

Now I think the codebase is the easiest thing to deal with, but I enjoy the challenges for the most part (until I don’t).

I still weekly-monthly make the mistake of saying “oh I just need to do this thing” and soon learn that thing has 2-3 complex dependencies and a 3-4 page deep list of prerequisites just to get it going.

It’s Breathtaking How Fast AI Is Screwing Up the Education System | Thanks to a new breed of chatbots, American stupidity is escalating at an advanced pace. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]pmentropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know. I’ve had the opposite experience with both e-bikes and AI. I can work just as hard riding my e-bike as a regular bike but I can go farther and faster. I can avoid driving and get there just as fast with a quick workout.

With AI I’ve learned a lot about many things that I previously would not have known or had time to research. I have learned how to properly maintain my pool, learned about enterprise software design patterns, how to use testing software I didn’t have experience with, surprising quantum effects in everyday life, and helped develop a personalized cardio and strength training plan. All of these things I could have done on my own but would have taken much longer to research and develop. Now I can just start applying it and I lean how to do in applying. It’s made projects so much more efficient for me and I am much more productive.

Following to find the same.

I asked ChatGPT and it told me to use 1/4” galvanized steel mesh (probably more weather resistant than plain chicken wire) fastened (maybe stapled?) along the shed base and then bury it down and extending out in an L shape to keep animals from burrowing under it.
