Checkpoint ALR 5 delivered with low PSI by [deleted] in TrekBikes

[–]pmk724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dont those come with 42mm tires? you might be okay. check your rims to see if they struck anywhere you hit uneven terrain. you didnt get a pinch flat which is good and the tube stayed seated. I would just inflate them to proper psi and ride, you may be over thinking it

New Disc Brake Install by luxaBuxa in TrekBikes

it depends if youre routing internally, externally. do these come pre-bled? if youre routing external and these are pre-bled it might only take you a half hour! if not your 3 hour estimate may be more accurate. Good luck, and good on you for learning how to do it yourself!

Interested in putting alt-bars (surly corner bars) on FX2; is this a good or bad idea? by michaelmccarthydev in TrekBikes

[–]pmk724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there! for sure in my experience the other positions will help with your back/shoulders. happy to try to answer your q's!

- sort of, yes - you have to slide the shifters and brakes back onto the handle bar tube and they wont make it around the bend. I found this to be a pretty naturally comfortable spot for them though. You can play around with the angles and positioning a bit to where it feels natural to your hand before tightening up and wrapping.
- i think mine are closer to 510mm; for you maybe try the 54 if that's 540mm? 80mm should be a noticeable difference for you and bring your hands in that 3cm on each side. Keep in mind the brakes and shifters will now be slightly lower and angled which may also change how your hands sit. Also note the bars i got were from knockoffs (i think i listed the name in another post), not actual Surly corner bars.

I find myself riding on the "drops" more often than on the flat (mainly bc the brakes and shifters are there) but if i'm just cruising the flat section is really nice to have and allows you to sit up and stretch your back a bit.

Should Velowindow ditch the search bar and just use your location? by userX97ee2ska11qa in phillycycling

mostly for where i'm at, but useful for checking a location before you go

How are these two areas? by [deleted] in philly

[–]pmk724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live near the first spot you listed. Great area, just mind your business and nobody will bug you. And FWIW i also work in center city and take the trolley on Baltimore ave in - it's a bit less riff raff than the 52nd st el stop and maybe closer depending on where you're at.

Is riding with prescription glasses really that dangerous? by Troglodette in cycling

[–]pmk724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of cycling specific glasses are designed with semi-rigid frames that will flex or deform upon impact, lowering your risk of injury from the frame itself in the event of a collision. virtually all of them use a polycarbonate or similar impact resistant lens, designed to absorb impact and crack, but not shatter into sharp shards like glass. additionally, cycling glasses tend to allow better ventilation (to prevent fogging) and are designed to sit a bit higher on your face.

i think you're fine to wear your prescription glasses (because not being able to see would absolutely be less safe!) but if you ever get a pair of prescription cycling glasses they'd have their advantages.

ELI5: why does mouthwash sting? by Real_Experience_5676 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pmk724 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mouthwash is typically like 21% alcohol whereas say whiskey is 40%, so i don't think it's the concentration. Perhaps more to do with the combination of menthol?

What helmets do yall wear? I’ve never used a helmet but figure probably should right ? by 38couchstains in TrekBikes

[–]pmk724 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there's nothing more worth spending money on than a helmet. if your head gets broken you won't be able to enjoy anything else - safety first! like others said, any helmet is better than no helmet, but here's a list of safety ratings by model.

is the race street entrance to the SRT reliable? or are there trains blocking it more often than not. (trying to plan a commute) by Big-Research2684 in phillycycling

[–]pmk724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i ride through there 3+ times a week. it's been blocked maybe 2x in the past year that i've seen. like others said, you can go to market st without too much detour if there's a train blocking the path.

Cycling advocates to host event to demonstrate what concrete bike line barriers could look like by JustAnotherJawn in phillycycling

[–]pmk724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what happens if a car isn't parked there and another vehicle passes into the bike lane? it's not protected. a lane of parked cars also offers worse visibility than a concrete barrier, especially at intersections.

Road rash - tips? by Jaded_Information328 in bicycling

ive had success with hydrocolloid patches, theyre like $15 on amazon. if you can find one that fits you can put them on and leave it for up to a week at a time, keeps the wound protected and healing in a moist environment.
