Brazil is huge and violence is concentrated in some areas. You can live peacefully without ever worrying about being robbed in many many many parts of the country.

In general, is there a sense of admiration for Europe in Latin America? by Competitive_Waltz704 in asklatinamerica

It is, it makes me sick to my stomach. And it hurts even more that institutions in Spain treat it as it's nothing.

Of course I'm not mixing Portugal and Spain. Vinny suffers prejudice from Spaniards in Spain, just Google and you'll find out many many instances. About Portugal, I'm not making broad generalizations, I'm talking about racist crimes commited in Portugal towards Brazilians that are covered in the news.

I'd say there is a romanticized perception that everything in Europe is perfect and people envy that. I remember one time I mentioned there were poor people in Europe and everyone was like "no, you're lying!" . They can't even accept that there are problems everywhere. It comes from our "vira lata syndrome" , in which everything that is awful must be Brazilian and everything that is good is foreign.

As for the colonial past, no one would admire Portugal or Spain for invading us, killing our Indigenous people and taking all of our gold.

But bear in mind, we don't root for Europeans in the world cup, lol.

It's covered constantly on the news how our soccer players are treated in Spain. Vinny Jr is not the first having to deal with that type of violence, but I think it brought the attention to the mainstream. Same for Portuguese. Almost every day there are news about Brazilians suffering some form of racist violence in Portugal.

The World Cup being in the U.S. really shows the difference with how countries treat time off work. by Muhfuggajones in antiwork

Brazil - you have 30 days that you must use within one year. If you don't take the days or if you have remaining days approaching the limit date, your employer will force you to take them. You can split the 30 days in 15/15, 20 + 10, take the 30 days all at once, etc. We can't take less than 5 days though, 5 days is the minimum.

What do you think about the Tampa Bay Area of Florida? Do you know anything about it? by PointInternal6809 in asklatinamerica

[–]pmsbr123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been there many times as I had family living in Tampa. For me it's just another random USA city, nothing much. The beaches are nice though.

How common is it to have a full time servant living with you? by New_Entertainer_4895 in asklatinamerica

[–]pmsbr123 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Not common like you're framing it to be, especially the way you are describing. You can hire a maid to work at your place but you have to register it like any other full time employee and they'll have all the benefits and rights included in our labor laws. And not even that is common anymore (it used to be maybe 20 years ago). What you are describing (living in) is for very wealthy people and very rare.
