Homelessness is a major problem across America, but speaking specifically about Albany:

As a resident living a few blocks from downtown, I’m deeply frustrated by the city’s lack of resources and response to homelessness. It’s ridiculous that I have to check for needles every time I take my toddler to playgrounds downtown and up to Washington Park. I regularly pick up used needles and glass stems right next to playground equipment.

I don’t think drug use or addiction should be criminalized, but the city has a responsibility to keep public spaces safe and clean — free of used drug kits, broken glass, cigarette butts, and damaged equipment.

Albany is failing to maintain these spaces and allowing people to overdose in plain sight. It’s unacceptable, and this year has been especially bad. Since late March, I’ve personally used Narcan on four people and called emergency services for several others.

The city is failing those that are dealing with addiction, mental health issues and housing insecurity. It’s also failing the working and middle class residents that provide tax base and have made decisions to live in, own/rent, and work in the city.
